it did, and i don't recall any 48's making it out there. No f2  Lotus in the GP in relevant years , and no cars sold for use in the national championship? and i don't believe Lotus ever shipped a 48 out there to test it..

I had completely forgotten that I had started this thread eleven years ago. I don't even recall why I was so curious about this model of Lotus.

 

In my initial post I stated that I assumed that the Clark Hockenheim wreck had been suitably disposed of. I said that in spite of the fact that I had heard a story (so long ago that I don't recall when or from who) that this wreck had been on display in Niagara Falls (at the Skylon Tower?) as part of a driving safety exhibit.

 

This seems ridiculous as I'm sure Colin Chapman would have never let that happen.

 

But is there anything anyone can add that might explain why this tale came about?

Just recieved the latest HLR magazine which features an article on the 48/1 which Hal & Hall have recently sold to California

Well, Pau and Rouen were the favourites because of the "No.8", but the extreme left of the Hill/48 pic suggests that the textured surface of the wall is continuous - more like the pics I've seen of Pau (which had upright columns but no separate 'boxes') - whereas in the Rouen pic linked by mfd it's punctuated by the ends of the dividing walls. The Rouen pic also shows white paint markings on the road (Were they a constant feature at Rouen? It's not clear when that pic was taken).

The text refers to the photographer seeing the Honda Six in 1965 - does this indicate the photos are too?

Perhaps the teller of the story was getting confused with the wreck of James Dean's Porsche, which was displayed at various locations around the US for that stated purpose?

I used to work for Gerry Kinnane in the late 60's and I have had the fortune to work on the Lotus 48's even after changing my employer.

 

The exhaust note from the 48's was beautiful; no muffler, just a straight chrome exhaust pipe.

 

@Simon Thomas - When Gerry bought the two Lotus 48's he also purchased the transporter for them. The cars and the transporter were painted in 'Team Ireland' colours. The transporter and 48's were kept at the workshop on the Falls Road. I doubt very much that you sat in one of the 48's in Beechmount Avenue as when Gerry bought the 48's he operated from his new premises on the Falls Road.

POI Gerry Kinnane and Fred Smith did not live in a street opposite Beechfield (or Beechmount) Avenue; Fred lived close to the Falls Road Bus Depot and Gerry lived off Springfield Avenue.

 

@Bill P - Fred Smith repaired the John Watson damaged 48 at Gerry's premises on the Falls Road.

 

At that time, I worked at the Royal Naval Air Yard, Sydenham, Belfast and I was able to borrow some tools that Fred needed during the repair. The repair was not easy as Fred did not have the equipment needed to form the new panels but he was able to replicate most of them as close to the originals as his resources would allow.

 

AFAICR there were changes around the cockpit and the plastic screen. There was problems trying to repair the side panel and Fred had it replaced. He got some work carried out at the Belfast Corporation Bus Depot & Workshop, Falls Road; these guys had expertise working with aluminium panels.

Again, AFAICR there was no work carried out by Mackies.

 

The last time I seen one of these Lotus 48's, and indeed Gerry Kinnane, was at a speed event held at Stormont, Dundonald back in August 2000. There I also met up with Damien Magee who also worked and drove a Lotus 11? for Gerry Kinnane.

 

It is very nostalgic seeing all the pictures of the 48’s; it brings back many good memories.

Proceeding up the Falls Road towards Andersonstown Beechmount Avenue is on the right after The Royal Victoria Hospital. Entering Beechmount Avenue Gerry's garage was on the right not to far up with a small entry beside it to the left. The Lotus 48 was still in GLTL colours as last driven by Graham Hill.

A further query regards the colours of the 48s when owned by Gerry Kinnane -

 

 

48/1 Watson/L'amie car was metallic mid-Green with yellow features on nose, engine cover and wings when run by John L'amie after the "rebuild" - I can't recall colour scheme when raced by John Watson at Thruxton.  48/1 did not race in N.Ireland until used by John L'amie

 

48/2 Pollock car was metallic mid-Green with orange features on nose, engine cover and wings - see posts 30 & 31

What sort of brake horsepower would a competitive F2 car be making at the time ?

Probably 210/215bhp for an FVA depending on engine series
