That first one's the start of a race, Doug...

Clark getting away best, Surtees next, Siffert and Bandini in the flat 12 looking like they'll beat the third front row car off the line.

Now comes the tricky part... that doesn't look like JoBo in that third car, nor would I have expected him to be there... and naturally I can't look up any magazines or books for clues. And the car with what looks like Stewart's helmet in it (behind Siffert) doesn't really look all that BRM.

Is there a mix of F2 cars in there... or is that a skinny works Cooper over in the distance?

Looks like Silverstone, probably 1965 International Trophy.

Next one that really comes into my ambit is the Brabham being lashed onto the VW... Silvio Moser?

2 is Ascari going into the harbour... 9 is Brabham heading a bunch at Monjuich Park in 1969...

12... Baghetti winning at Syracuse?

Not Ascari, Ray, I think it's Collins/Hawthorn in 1956.

No. 6 is a Gobron-Brillié.

Not Ascari going into the harbour. Wrong year. It's Collins and Hawthorn in 1957

I'll be back

No. 24 is Montlhéry, wouldn't want to guess the year...

No. 21 Roy Lane on the 2-4-0 hill-climbing (1976/7?).

No. 19 Taffy von Trips.

No. 17 Nuvolari at Brno?

No. 12 Baghetti at Siracusa 1961.

No. 10 Carratsch in... an Ego?

No. 9 Montjuïc, of course, Brabham, Ickx etc.

No. 13 r-l Mercedes 1914GP, Alfa P3, ERA E-type (?) and B-type

No. 22 is Karl Kling, Buenos Aires 1951.

Aha! At LAST I get to identify one! Months of swotting up on old F1 cars, and my scalextric collection lead me to belive that photo number 21 is none other than the March 240, which was successfully campained by Roy Lane (visual clue on the side of the car, but I might be wrong...I don't want to stick my neck out too far) for two seasons in the British Hillclimb championship (I think it was the only time this car ever showed any success). If I'm right, then it must have been reconverted to its four-wheel configuration after winning the first two races, because he didn't feel the extra wheels gave him any advantage (please, please let me be right........). Otherwise, its a Panther 6.

No. 18 Rosberg leading the Portuguese GP.

Now there's a story I always fondly remember: In the final qualifying session, Rosberg had troubles over troubles with his Williams/Honda, being stranded out on the circuit with only minutes remaining of the session, and down in 27th position and thus not yet qualified!

He got out in the spare car and had only time enough for one final lap - and returned 4th fastest time! Talk about guts and cool-headedness...

Um. i can tell 7 is Brands, 13 is Donington, 20 is Goodwood.

18 must be '84 (Mansell #12 Lotus, a #6 Williams, Senna in his Toleman). Npt so sure about the which race, Portugal?

No. 5 is the Circuit de la Route Pavée or somesuch... can't identify the car :(

Now thinking again about the Kling picture, look at that mechanic (?) to the right sporting Adolf H. hair and moustache - now would anyone in 1951 dare to look like that??????????????

Trouble is, it's got to be Kling, but I don't know of any other time he drove the W154/163, or is it a W165? Help?

Isn't that a Melkus in the background of No. 11? Surely looks like an Eastern race meet...

Now No. 16 puzzles me no end - I know I've seen the picture before, but for the life of me...

No. 11 is Max Wilson's Lola T70 - BRM at Vila Real in 1969.

Car in the background is a Costin-Nathan - I think John Markey's was the only one entered.

A few points of interest on number 7, the 1960 silver City Trophy.

The Cooper number 4 is indeed McLaren, Brabham having already departed. more remarkably, perhaps, Roy Salvadori, in Tommy Atkins Cooper has gone with him. And what is David Piper's Lotus 16 doing with the works 18s? The picture also proves that Sheldon is wrong about the numbers on the Ferraris. Phil Hill can be seen with number 42, not 40 as usually stated. THe Motor Sport report of the race indicated some confusion over who drove which Ferrari. They must have changed cars during practice and not bothered to change numbers.

The Lotus 18 drivers are Clark, Ireland and Surtees. Moss was still recovering from his Spa accident.

Blimey over 30 posts in 2hours, you just can turn your back here for 1 second. I hope I'm not repeating anyone here but No 13 is Donington.
The nearest to the camera is the Multi Union, then a P3 Alfa (de Cadenet's car?), then the 1914 GP winning Mercedes with the ex-Nuvolari 8CM Maserati in the background.

Oh and Roy Lane looks to be rounding Pardon at Prescott.

Sorry Mark, I beat you to the Donington ID! Isn't that John Bolster driving the Alfa? And maybe DSJ in the ERA?

Surely you mean DSJ the 8CM (there isn't an ERA in the picture)

Ok, I'll try again.

No 5 is A Salmson competing on the 1923 Circuit des Route Pavees, going over a purpose built obsticle on the course. Is it a Morgan in the background?

And I am sure that fines is correct in spotting the Ego

No 24 is the "Course de Formule Libre de L'ACF on 2nd July 1927

No 20 is George Eyston's Type 35C Bugatti, No 16 is Louis Chiron's Type 35B, no 2 is de Courcelles in a Guyot Speciale (he was envolved in a fatal crash on lap 3). No 12 is Williams in one of the 4 litre Sunbeams (he led until the gearbox failed on lap 2) - No 8 is Louis Wagner in the other.

In Eyston's autobiography, he says that he was on the second row between the 2 Sunbeams and when the flag dropped, Wagner made the best start and shot into the lead. However, assuming this is the start (there are people on the track in the background), then this photo doesn't agree with his account. Discuss.

I seem to remember that at the height of the turbo era, with 1000+ bhp etc., some wag reckoned at Kyalami the cars were arriving at the end of the long main straight at 230mph. He said the only way they were going to lose enough speed to get round Crowthorne was to "shoot them down".

Now I know parts of Africa aren't quite up to speed with the rest of the civilised world, but I would have thought by the 80's the South African's could have come up with something better than pic 3 ;)

So please, is it JoBo or a stand-in? And who's the car in the distant background?

Is it an F2 Matra or (more likely?) a Tecno? And the other car at the rear... with the hat that looks very Stewart?

Oh dear! I was in doubt about the E-type, but never questioned my judgement about the other "ERA"... my only excuse is the same as Richard's, i.e. it was late, I was going to bed, just a quick look at TNF - and then that! :D

Still, it was good to be one of the first to spot this thread, so I had a chance to identify a few. Most times when Doug posts his quizzies I'm in a position similar to Mark, i.e. the thread is going for a couple of hours already, and only the real difficult and obscure ones are left!

Keep this sort of thing going, Doug!

This is the starting grid, according to Sheldon:

#20 Bonnier - #16 Surtees - #18 Clark
#22 Bandini - #26 Siffert
#10 Hailwood - #14 Ireland - #24 Spence
etc.

So the F2 car is in fact a Parnell 25, and the wee Scott Ireland!
