Searching around for pictures of the 1962 Gilby BRM in order to make a slot car shell for my Halfton Series, I happened upon the LAT Photographic site which purports to have 4 Gilby pictures.

One is of a Brooklands race that includes a driver named Gilby, while the other 3 claim to be pictures of Gilby cars.

One is the beautiful picture of Keith Greene at the 'Ring, which appeared in Motor Sport recently. The other 2 are almost identical and are shown as Ian Raby, Gilby BRM #26, British G.P. 1963.

This is one of the 2 (courtesy of LAT Photographic)

Clearly, it IS Silverstone, but it looks like a Lotus 21 to me - so, who and when ????

Does anyone have any other Gilby pictures, please?

Barry
No 26, Silverstone... could it be Brian Gubby at the 1965 British GP in a Lotus 24?

Did Gubby run an FPF CLimax?

That doesn't look like it's got a V8 at all...

Sheldon has him running a Climax FWMV V8.

Well, that pic looks very much like it's a 4-cylinder with a big exhaust on the right hand side... and no sign of any inlet trumpets on the top... not that you'd see them, perhaps, but the engine cover of the V8-powered Lotuses did rise up at each side behind the drivers' shoulders.

Apologies for the poor reproduction, Barry, but nonetheless this is Ian Raby at the International Trophy:

Regarding the picture at the top. It just doesn't look Lotus to me. The radiator opening is the wrong shape (not elliptical enough), and the bodywork appears to sweep up ahead of the windscreen.

When I first looked at the nose I thought "Kincraft", but the well-filled grandstands would suggest that this was a major meeting, rather than a clubbie.

How about Philip Robinson Lotus 18/21 #904 Climax 4 at International Trophy 11 May 1963?

It certainly looks bulky enough to be a rebodied 18.

I don't think so. It's got a badge on the nose just above the radiator opening. I don't think Vanwall ever had a badge they relied on the signwriting. A coiple of years back, when someone produced a series of automobilia (can't remember if it was scarfs, ashtrays, coffee mugs, or what) they had to invent a Vanwall badge. And the rear-engined Vanwall was more of a whale!

Rob's absolutely right I believe - definitely NOT a V8, the radiator inlet shape is precisely right for a standard Lotus 18/21 conversion and most decidedly it is NOT the Vanwall 'Whale' - here's to you Mr Robinson...the Gilby???? :stoned:

Most 18/21s had top links to relieve the drive shafts from this burden. I think this one does too.

This is my programme from the 1963 British GP. Ian Raby is indeed down as no. 26 in the Gilby, and I'm sure I can remember it. Barry's first pic must be another event, and sure looks like a 21 to me.

But as a matter of interest, what did Tony Settember's Emeryson look like, that was no. 26 in the International Trophy at Silverstone in 1962?

Although Rob29 didn't actually say so, #26 in the 1963 International Trophy was indeed Philip Robinson in his Lotus 18/21

Are you sure?

It's pretty hard to tell... but I think you can see the anti-roll bar clearly enough... if there's a top link it's hidden by the trailing arm.

Certainly, the extremely low position of the bottom wishbone is as per the 18s...

I only wanted to know what the Emeryson looked like

And I was just building up to posting my irrelevant collection of Brian Gubby photos, too. :(

Well, thank you all for the input.

I was always certain that it was a Lotus 21 (or rebodied 18) but not having access to programmes or Sheldon, I could not pinpoint year or driver.

Rob - thank you for the Gilby pictures. All I need now is a rear view (of the Gilby!!!)

BTW, everyone, Mr. Beard may live in the depths of darkest Lancashire but his roots are somewhat further south!

I guess my slot-car Gilby may be the only one in existence (when I finally make it!)

Was the Gilby-BRM a rebuild of The Gilby-Climax or was it a completely new car? The "shark" nose in the pictures of both cars looks very similar.

It was a new car, although of similar design.

Well, it took a long time and a LOT of head scratching (Piers Courage fans take note!) but I have finally completed my humble slot-race Gilby B.R.M.

Due to its funny nose and unusual change of curvature around the cockpit area, this proved to be one of the more difficult cars I have yet built - still, it's only for me so it doesn't really matter....

Thanks to everyone who helped make the construction of this car possible.

P.S. .....it looks better in the plastic - so to speak.

Dave, I dont know the chassis #, it was found in a field equipped for mud racing, it had a Corvair transaxle fitted with an adapter plate to take a SB Chev. Most of the panels and tanks were there. but no engine or drive train. Had chrome rocker frt suspension with inboard shocks. I never found an engine and sold it later.
