Q re: Historic F1 Video

I'm under the impression that FOM does not own the rights to anything prior to 1981. Is this true? If so, who controls the rights and how can they be contacted?

I don't think any one organisation owns rights to TV footage prior to 1981. In fact, prior to 1981, you will probably find that recordings of many GPs no longer exists.

a company called Brunswick Films (here in the UK) owns a lot of pre-Bernie footage. They are a commercial company, depends on what you want to do with it!!! I think they MAY have released videos of their stuff years ago. Of course, the TV companies that covered each Grand Prix SHOULD still have the tapes (are you listening, BBC????)

Duke Video has an impressive line-up of many titles concerning entire races or full seasons...

The video about the 1974 and 1975 season, now published by Duke, was originally published by Brunswick.

They are not too bad, I mean there is not much choice. But I must say I don't like Cosworth engined Ferrari's. The people at Duke assembling these tapes don't really bother about mixing the right sounds with the right images. Nor do they bother about some facts that are cited in them (just "enjoyed" the Barry Sheene video by Duke).


Brunswick had, anyway until 2002, I don't remember exactly, a very precise description per GP of the images available. A description of the scene (who's interviewed; driver X is overtaking driver Y and where; how long the scene lasted). I think this ran from 1970 till 1975. I was interested in 1974 and I think the list contained all GP's

I wanted to buy some of that stuff, but they are VERY unhelpful. The lady who was responsible was never n the office; promised phonecalls or emails never materialized, they would not even quote me a price.
It's apparently very much a non-profit organization.

If someone on the forum has managed to establish some real communication with results, I very mcuh would like to hear about it.

The Brunswick series covered the years 1970 to 1980. They were originally shown on TV (I taped them off ITV in the 80s) and were subsequently released on VHS. They were fairly patchy in their coverage of the various seasons. Not all GPs were attended and only a limited number of cameras were sent to each venue. The voice over is by an American who seems not to know an awful lot about the F1 scene. The 1975 tape is the poorest as the crew decided to attach themselves to Emerson Fittipaldi so it turns into a "behind the scenes at McLaren" documentary. However, they are still worth looking at and seem to be the best film record availble on the pre-FOCA era.

They are all shot on film by the way, not video and none of them contain any recordings of the TV broadcasts of any of the races. I would love to come across a source of old VT recordings of races.
