can anyone help here. I'm trying to indentify a car in some film I have. It's taken at Indy, the car is race number 40, and it's an Andy Granatelli car, the whole crew have STP logos on their jackets. Can anyone tell me what year it was and who was the driver?? Thanking you in advance....

This was during the period that the only car number allowed to end with a zero was the car carrying no. "10" -- this was to reducing any chance for a scoring error.

1967 was the first year that the number "40" was used at the IMS in moodern times. It was obviously an entry from the Granatelli family since they and/or STP held onto that number for a good while.

Yes - because in the days when the scorer called numbers verbally, if he said, 40, followed instantly by 4, they would write down 44. Once electronic scoring took over, that problem was eliminated.

Pretty obscure car. Not one anybody noticed I am sure. But what is that is see in the background? Could it be, could it be.... people in the grandstand? Where was Tony George then? Think of the cleanup costs of all those beer cans and popcorn boxes they left behind. Oh the horror....

having just spoken to my friend in Philadelphia who actually has the film at th emoment, I can confirm thatthis is the car that is inour film. The film we have is someone's home movie of stuff along the pitlane at Indy and in the pit garage. Unfortunately it's only black and white, but it might be better than nothing. I wonder who shot it.......................

Those pyajamas were laughed about then but a genuine one nowadays is worth something!
A Granatelli Crew man told me that the first year ever for these pyama's and the first day they appeared he was so embarrased and when I asked him why he replied: "Did you ever hear thousands of people laugh about you because of your clothes?"
About the spectators:
Buford can probably tell you more but I once heard that the 1963 and 1967 Pole days were among the best visited Pole days ever in Indy history. The 1967 one because of so many people eager so see that weird STP car going flat-out.
Not that is was popular but it did attract people to the speedway.
