My guess is Tony Brooks (#30 Vanwall) ahead of Jack Brabham (#16 Cooper) and Maurice Trintignant (#20 Walker Cooper) in the 1958 GP of Monaco. I'm afraid I can't pinpoint where on the track this is though.

Looks like the photo may have been taken by the Casino in middle of the left turn going into the right turn, or it might be Mirabeau before turning right to go down to Hairpin. I would go with Casino :up:

The only places at Monaco where the sun is directly from the left in mid-afternoon are:

1) out of Gazometer
2) just before Casino.

That probably narrows it a bit.

I'm going to buck the trend a bit and say it's down at the Gas-O-Meter. It seems that there's a bit more room just off track (in the background of the pic, where the Citroen is) than there is-or was-up by Casino. Just a barely educated guess fuelled by a quick scan through Ranier Schlegelmilch's book on Monaco (which conveniently confirms that it's 1958, not that I usually doubt too much I read around here).

Interesting to note the race numbers the right way round -'Confiture' reversed in the background...

I saw that too, but being dense couldn't come to a conclusion as to why that was.

Just above the Citroen's windshield you'll see the fragment of another word that does not look reversed or upside down - could the Confiture or whatever be written on some kind of wooden panel/fence and that panel be upside down?

- I think it's the exit of the Gasworks Hairpin as well.There's a road that led onto the harbour front at 90% to the hairpin. Dunno if it's still there, but try multimap for confirmation

It has been confusing me for sometime that Scalextric are issuing the 1961 Vanwall paired with the 1954 Maserati 250F.

I never understood why the rear engined (whale) Vanwall was to be paired with the classic front engined car, then I saw their photo of a "1961 Vanwall"!!

The photo explains all - they are clearly basing their Vanwall on a very early historic race meeting, that took place in 1961, running cars that were only a few years old (1960's version of EuroBOSS?).

The word is "confiance" which means confidence and it's upside down. Probably a left-over from a publicity panel.

AFAIK the first historic races to include 250Fs were 1962 (Australia) or 1965 (UK) and a Vanwall didn't take part in such an event until 1990
The Masers were occasionally seen in UK libre races before 1965, but certainly no Vanwall
There might have been a demo in 1961, I suppose

The inside word from Scalextric is that they will be producing the 57 versions of both the Vanwall and Maserati. The picture captions and even their catalog are wrong. For us that love old cars and slots this is of course good news.

This picture, in un-cropped form, appears on page 49 of a book titled "Monaco Grand Prix-Portrait of a Pageant". The caption does not mention the corner. I does mention that it is the first lap.

Cropped out of Dennis' pic to the right is Jean Behra's BRM leading the Vanwall. Above The BRM is shop marquee reading "Le Pharmacie Moneg____" (can't read it all). Above the Coopers,and to the left, is the corner of a newish (unoccupied, I would guess as no-one is leaning out the windows) , blocky building (a hotel or apartments?) with a shallow grandstand in the front. The panels with "confiance" lettering appear to be a barrier for a consruction site. The trees are only about fifteen feet high. The cars are coming out of a right-hand corner with hay-bales in front of the grand stand.

Hope this helps to determine the corner.
