Is there anybody here who could fill in a bit of the background about the Chapparal f5000 car that Franz Weiss raced in 1971? I understand from the Chevrolet-Racing? book that its origins were in a GM protoype vehicle, and that it came together as a sort of after hours project after the Fan Car was banned. Anybody got any decent shots of it?

It was based on the tub of the aborted Indy project. Two F5000 races: Minnesota Grand Prix (US R7 Brainerd - 15 August 1971) qualified 21st of 28, retired after 19 laps of heat 1 (engine) and finished 14th of 15 finishers in heat 2 for 22nd overall; Lime Rock Grand Prix (US R8 Lime Rock - 06 September 1971) qualified 13th and wrecked on the first lap.

There's a couple of pictures here. No decent shots though.

I don't know where the F5000s went, but I just found out that many of the legendary Chapparral 2s are going on display in Midlands Texas at the Petroleum Museum.

FYI: "Chaparral" is a kind of climate or ecological zone and the word is used to describe vegetation found in such regions as California foothills. The leather protective garments worn by cowboys, "Chaps" or "Chaparreras" take their name from the same root, "chaparro," which apparently designates a kind of pine tree. In my experience, chaparro is Spanish for "short of stature," as in "Not a tall person." Chaparral is what the roadrunner bird (as in "Meep Meep") is called.
