Does anyone know the exact date of marraige for Rudi Caracciola and Charlotte (Charly) Liemann? And don't say 1928, I know that. Any ideas on how I could find out? James L. Kalie, Bellevue, WA USA jkalie@msn.com

According to the book by Rudolf Caraciola and Oskar Weller Rennen – Sieg – Rekorde !, publ. 1935, he married in 1926 after his win at the German Grand Prix (July 11) but I have no exact date.

Gunter Molter's "Titan am Volant" also says 1926, implying, as Hans says, some time after the German GP.

In his book Mein Leben als Rennfahrer (1940?), Caracciola wrote that they got engaged on the evening after his victory at the 1926 German Grand Prix.

Not in the English edition (at least not in so many words) : it says that was the moment he knew "the day would come when she would be with me forever." Then later the marriage is mentioned in passing, but with no details.

Presumably the German GP victory prize money meant he had enough to not only open his Mercedes dealership but also to get married.

I have that same sentence in Dutch in "Mijn leven als coureur" (Spectrum, 1963) which as a title is an exact translation of "Mein Leben als Rennfahrer" - but is a translation of his later biography "Meine Welt" (Limes, 1958)! Perhaps your sentence is from an English translation of that later autobiography too?
Or is "Meine Welt" just an updated extension of "Mein Leben als Rennfahrer"?

Yes, you're right. But I'd guess that it is an updated version of the 1940 volume, which would probably finish after Belgrade and/or the death of Anatol the monkey. It was first published in English in 1955 by Foulis as "Caracciola, Mercedes Grand Prix Ace" and then updated again for an American edition, published by Farrar Strauss & Giroux (and Cassell in the UK) as "A Racing Driver's World".

If we for once want to believe Alfred Neubauer in Männer, Frauen und Motoren, where he tells us that Caracciola and Charly had wanted to marry before. But Rudi had said only under the condition that, quote:" You shall not have a little car salesman as a husband. Before that I have to win a really big race. I have to prove that I can do more than the others. And I don't want that people whisper behind our backs: That is the poor little salesman, who has married the daughter of a millionaire..."
