OK, slightly bizarre question I know, but I've been trying to work out when I started watching F1 (albeit patchily). I have vague recollections of the first races I watched on TV, but can't work out when it was. All I know is - it would be somewhere between 82 and 85 (inclusive), and while I can't remember who were the key drivers, I can remember that everyone kept running out of fuel right around the end of the races, because there was some new fuel tank restriction in place I believe. Can anyone help out, and give me a brief summary of the season. Cheers!

If you were watching in NZ then you would have doing it 'patchilly' - is that a word?

We - NZ - got Monaco on a delayed broadcast in 1982. That was a race that was as dull as hell for 98% of it but the last 2% was fantastic.

And yes, fuel shortages did occur.

The F1 economy runs were 1984/85ish.

I really can't recall much of that being on TV.

In 1989 we started getting edited highlights on the Monday night after a GP and then Sky arrived , in Auckland only at first, in 1990 - France/Capelli/Leyton Houses/bugger

Not sure about "patchily", but who cares. Anyway, I was in the UK back then, so did get coverage, whenever it was. And I thought NZ was badly off now!

It seems to me that the 1985 San Marino Grand Prix may feature in your memory. Johansson and Senna ran out of fuel in the closing laps as did Boutsen while Prost was disqualified giving the win to a fortunate Elio deAngelis.

That sounds suspiciously like it. Thanks!

I can remember first watching F1 racing in 1984-85 but more like into the tv room watch for 5-10 minutes then out, but after seen a F1 car in 1987 on a tyre test I then started watching the racing with more interest in 1987 onwards  :smoking:
