It looks pretty much the "light" situation of the old Zandvoort pit boxes. Basically they were open front and rear. Sometimes easy to take too much light from the back ground.

Does RTL GP Magazine not badly need a Lauda interview in the upcoming issue???? What is Super Rat up to these days, I mean so many business ventures...

In that case: who drove the Ferrari that day or was it just Niki being offered a chance to try several cars?

Also, I am still interested in what is behind Lauda driving that Matra at Zeltweg five years earlier.

Hi Arjan, he has agreed already to do it. It's just that we had two or three stories related to him so far, so we try and plan it sometime this year to keep the variety up!

That's the thing I was thinking about too. Fittipaldi F5/1 is shown in its original configuration in the picture --as it was at Zolder '77 during its GP debut. Zolder didn't have such pit boxes in that time (cars were just lined up along pitlane), so it's not there. But there is still a possibility for Anderstorp where F5/1 had been used until it was quite badly damaged in accident during practice session.

Mind you, the tyre tests in Holland were directly after the Belgium GP.

Are you sure Arjan? I remember in 1978 they used to be held after the German GP and before the Austrian (hence many cars running unbranded tobacco liveries). Maybe in 1977 it was earlier?

Mark, Autorensport had a small article in their July number: Seemed they tested already on the Monday directly after the Belgium GP. Ferrari tested a longer wheelbase T2. Due to rain the test was not a success. On Tuesday Reutemann replaced Lauda in testing, again on a wet track. Both Ligier and Fittipaldi (with their new FD05) were reported present. No details on Niki testing for Guy...

Reutemann tested on the Tuesday.

Other teams present: Ligier and Fittipaldi. I only found pictures of Fitti and El Lole during the obviously quite rainy Tuesday. No pics of Lauda driving the Ligier.

Greetings from Uithoorn!

Very interesting, can you post Lole pictures ,please?

Here's another one of that day at Zandvoort. Seems that Jacques is inviting Niki to try the Ligier :)

Thought of me to be a Lauda-expert...but never heard of these drives in the Ligier (maybe Fittipaldi)...Thanks !!!

Possible...the times were different...it was easier for the drivers to jump into another car...but Lauda was looking for another drive instead of Ferrari very soon in that season...

Does anyone remember Niki Lauda driving the Alfa Romeo 177 ?

The caption suggests this was the 2nd Alfa Romeo 177 test I wonder what Bernie got paid for Niki's services ?

Paul Ricard 1978. He also briefly drove at Balocco I think. The Ricard run was the test after which Lauda told Alfa a lot of work was still to be done. Not much longer the program was axed and Lauda was condemned by Italian fans for killing the Alfa F1-project for his own good (as he wanted Alfa to concentrate on its new V12 for his Brabhham rather than working on their own car as well). Of course, Alfa would eventually still run the car (from Zolder 1979 onwards).

Speaking of drivers sitting in competitors' cars: Schumacher even drove a McLaren-Mercedes at some point.

The car is a JS7, Ligier's 1977 car. The press called it "the blue Ferrari". Perhaps Niki wanted to see if it really was...

Niki looks good in the car. The JS7 was a real beauty - but how on earth did Enzo let him drive for a competitor?
The sound of its 12 cylinder engine is still legendary - what is the background story of that test?

Slightly off topic but still Niki Lauda and testing, looking for pics of Niki in the 312PB 74 I found this of Lauda about to embark on his first Ferrari F1 test.

I was completely out of touch with Motor Racing when this next Niki Lauda event occurred although I do remember Lauda being offered a position in the Jaguar set up, which seemed odd given the Jag team was once Stewart, did Niki take a consultation post does anyone know ?

Niki Lauda Jaguar 1

Niki Lauda Jaguar 2

This next one surprised me even more, I thought I was back in touch with Motor Racing when this most recent Niki Lauda event occurred, does any one know if it was an Austrian Connection photo opportunity or did Niki don his helmet once more ? Got any pix, it looks quite recent ?

Niki Lauda Red Bull

Thanks to 'bigears' for the tip :-)

Lauda was Jaguar team boss between August 2001 and November 2002, when he was sacked. He drove the F1 Jaguar in January 2002 - report here:

Better late than never - according to the ever-accurate Dr Paul Sheldon, the car Lauda tested at the Osterreichring in 1972 was chassis MS120B/04. The session ended when the engine blew. This was the last time that this chassis was driven in anger; it was taken to the last three races of the year as a spare, but never used.

During practice for the '76 German GP, Hunt climbed in Lauda's car and there's a photo to prove it. One book included a photo of Phil Hill driving an Eagle during the '66 Italian GP weekend, months after he'd retired. Eddie Cheever tested a Ferrari at Fiorano in '77 but I've only seen one photo from that unique session. There must be more. Autosprint, I'd think.

This has started me thinking about how many other tests Lauda is known to have been involved in for teams he wasn't contracted to. So far we have:
> Matra MS120B , Osterreichring 1972
> Ligier JS7, Zandvoort 1977
> Fittipaldi F5, Zandvoort 1977
> Alfa Romeo 177, Monza 1978
> Jaguar R2C, 2003
I recall that Jackie Stewart tested quite a few cars post-retirement, and don't recall any period reports of Lauda doing similar other than his acclimatisation in the Jaguar when he was team principal. Anyone have any evidence to the contrary?

Without wishing to appear in anyway pedantic IIRC Niki tested the Alfa 177 at Paul Ricard in '78.

Looks like Niki might also have driven a Red Bull prior to joining MB.

There is a world of difference between a driver who is still actively competing driving or testing a car from another team and a driver who is no longer racing driving or testing a car. It's a shame that we use the word 'testing' for so many different activities.

Agreed - hence the particular interest in how he ended up in the Matra. I can understand how Ligier and Fittipaldi would have welcomed the feedback of a driver with Lauda's testing abilities, which were widely acknowledged by 1977, but I'm sure this wasn't the case in 1972. The Alfa tests were pretty well-documented in 1978 as a collateral issue to the Brabham engine contract (and as D-type says it was of course Ricard - I blame my advancing years!!)

Another F1 testing variation, I believe this is Niki testing a 956 (956-107?) fitted with a 1.5 litre turbo motor that would be used to win the World Drivers Championships in 1985/6/7 :smoking:

Does anyone recognise the venue with picturesque scenery which appears devoid of any safety features like crash barriers or even a piece of traditional knotted string to keep the public at bay ?

Logically, it would be the Weissach test track which didn't used to be overpopulated with crash barriers.

Scroll one third of the way down this web page to see a sample of how it used to look. I think, today, there is much more Armco in evidence.

RAM March borrowed Nelson Piquet for a test in 1983. He said the car felt good, but that may have been to undermine its usual driver, Salazar, with whom Piquet had fisticuffs at Monza the previous year.

Hi guys

Thanks to the efforts of several TNFers who have supplied information (as in this particular thread), I have now virtually completed my 1/43 scale collection of cars raced, tested or demonstrated by Niki Lauda. For any of you who are interested, and particularly for those who have been kind enough to help in finding images, I've posted photos of the collection on the "Racing Collectables" sub-forum. There are a few work-in-progress items still awaiting parts to finish (these being the BMW 2800 from the 1971 Spa 24 Hours; March 722 F2 from Pau, 1972; BMW 3.0 CSL practiced at the 1973 Nurburgring 1000 km; Brabham BT45C Le Castellet Test January 1978 and Brabham BT46/1 Kyalami Test February 1978). I will post these in the appropriate places when completed.

There are still a couple of omissions for which I am still unable to find any images that are stymying my "completist" tendencies, so if anyone can help with the following I would be very grateful indeed:

  • Porsche 902/2-008 Preis Der Martha 25/10/1970
  • BMW 2002 Innsbruck Group 1 30/9/1973

If anyone has some more robust source material for the Lauda/Hofer Mini from the 1968 Nurburgring 6 Hours or the Ford Capri RS2600 from 1973's Osterreichring End Of Season Trophy that would validate the completed models, I would love to hear from them.

Thanks for indulging me, and for all your help.
