These sort of lists are usually just the subjective thoughts of one, or a mere handful of people, are completely illogical, and really meaningless, 85 % of that list I would not want at all.

Well I have 2, almost 3. Still have one of the original Minis left (of 17 I had) and one of the new ones. They list a GT350 Mustang but my 1966 Fastback isn't a Shelby so I got aced out by the better model. They don't list my 1934 Chevy but it is pretty cool too.

Nice to see my Impala SS is listed, and some others I have owned.

I personaly think the Jaguar XK120/140 ought to be on that list, and the Sunbeam Tiger, having owned them.

My Hillman Minx is curiously absent.

If it is the coupe 1940 Continental, it is easily explained, and the 1956-57 limited production 2-door Continental was a first rate design, selling for $13,000; even the '61 4-door convertible is a milestone car, one of the cleanest, prettiest cars ever to come from an American design studio.

But it begs the question: what years for these models listed?

Indeed, there are a number (like the 'Chevrolet Corvette' for instance...) that are totally ambiguous...

There's a lot of difference between a '55 Corvette with a six and a '63 Stingray 327 and a '71 427, not to mention the later models!

I think the 911 could have been higher, I'm glad to see the AM DB5 up there too!

"Of all time", and no pre-war cars such as the Bugatti T57sc and the Alfa 8c2900B...

For the average modern magazine staffer, "All Time" begins in 1980.

OK, I can agree that all of these, would be cool to own some more than others. But how can the Ferrari 250 GTO not be there (would the Pontiac GTO exist if the Ferrari GTO hadn't?). Somehow I'd also expected some of the older pre-50's cars to show up, like the Mercedes Benz SSLK, a whole bunch of Bugatti, Alfas, etc. I'd also vote to add the 396 Corvette which was maybe a bit more of a civilized contemporary to the 427 Cobra (awright, awright so what does 'civilized' have to do with it, well when you live in Seattle, hardtops, working windshield wipers, and semi-functional defrosters are a real good idea).

Funny, they have Porsche 911 at place 5 and '1973 Porsche 911 RS' at place 21. Not as cool as a 911?

The Porsche 911 sitting on number 5 spot is the 993 version of the 911. Not to be confused with other versions. 911's span over 30 years now but since Model Year 1990 they have a different internal code to separate them from previous generations of 911's.
For 911's produced between 1989(C4 model only) to 1994 the internal code was 964 and for the Turbo version 965.
For 911's produced between 1994( C2 model)-1998 the internal code was 993 which is the one sitting on number 5.
From 1998 till this model year the internal code is 996 and from MY 2005 we are going to have the new 997.

The 993 is the last and arguably best version of the classic 911 with an aircooled 3.6L engine. The 996 went to watercooled flat six engines hence opening a new chapter on the 911's.

I own 2 993's ( one street car and one club racer) and I do not think that I will part with any of them anytime soon exept maybe a Supercup GT3 to replace my 993RS club racer The 993 is an awesome 911 with great built quality,bulletproof engines, just like the previous 911's before Porsche went automated on their production of the Boxster and the new 911.

Of the 67 listed, I have owned Nos.
90 (1967 Westphalia poptop camper) and
100 (1960 Minor 1000 with a Judson Supercharger: Carlos Santana gave me a big thumbs-up in Tijuana traffic, 1963 or so)


I have driven
1 (1955 in 1955: I mistook first gear for third, very low speed, fortunately),
5 (1967 while advising a friend re: purchase. He did, and loved it),
9 (1964 289 with Weslake heads and Vayburrs: demo slalom at NAF El Centro; the car still holds the Holtvill A/P to Holtville Dairy Queen and return record),
24 (1956 in 1956: A friend asked if he should buy that one or a Lincoln Premiere. I advised against the 'apartment on wheels'. He bought the TBird and folded the r/f suspension when it wouldn't do a doughnut between kerbs).

I suppose it's a coincidence that I always say I need a hundred-car garage. Probably would not fill it with the same list, but they got the first one right.

Based on my limited experience, of course, I would add Cool Cars

1939 Ford coupe, orange, on a rake (Dago'd)
1950 Nash Rambler convertible
1966 Lotus Elan S2
Honda S800 convertible


Cool means A car that actually exists, that can be driven in furtherance of worldly purpose, and which elicits spontaneous "Cool!"s in a significant portion of its outings.

You've hit the nail on the head with that one.... I concur, the 40 Continental was an excellent car but so, the 4-door convertible as you've mentioned, and the Mark II in 1956 - 57 was a beautiful car.

I can think of no definition of "cool" that would encompass the Ferrari Gonzo - plenty of other Ferraris, yes, but not that bloated and ugly penis substitute.

And where, pray, are the MGs? The TC/D/F were definitely cool cars.

But most glaring omission of all is Lotus - the Lotus Elan Sprint has to be one of the coolest cars ever.

But that is just my opinion so I suppose that Car magazine are entitled to theirs.... grudgingly!

Quite right, actually I don't mind the Enzo too much apart of course from the lunatic price, some of the 80's 2+2 Ferraris I think looked ghastly. I once spent a couple of hours with a 355 (that's nearly 10 years ago !) certainly attractive but for a £100,000 car , found it a bit of a let down , the fit and finish wasn't anything special and you needed to use a lot of noisy revs all the time.

The announced sales price for the 917 when released in 1969 was $35,000 when the cost to Porsche to build each unit was stated to be $80,000.

I have owned a new Ferrari 328GTB and it was the worst ownership experience I have had to date. The Porsche 993 was one of the best.

I have always lusted after an Aston (the new DB-9 is magnificent) but alas, I not yet experienced an affordable example.

Same for the McLaren F1. Unobtainable, and DCN is most likely the only TNF member to have had the opportunity to drive one for a week.

Well, who's to know?

But in all probability it would be the Minor 1000 Traveller, a true classic in its day. 948cc of raw power, the ability to go anywhere there was a good road, wooden trim to give it real class.

But if it was the later Mini version, it did encapsulate the modern technology only a little while after Peugeot patented it.

Maybe it's a case of something like what the Scuderia Veloce Motors (Canberra) salesman told me when I asked him why their television and radio advertising insisted on pronouncing the middle word of their name 'Vell-oo-chay'...

63) Dodge Charger Daytona - no... with the pointed nose and wing, too much of everything - The '66 / '67's are the cool Chargers - most all of them, starting from the 383 4-speed cars. But for serious cool, make mine with with the big-block 440 or Hemi thank you.
66) Model A Ford - Not cool, though many hot rods based on the those and the '32 Model B sure are. I may go for the Model B there.
69) New Mini (Buford will be happy about this one) - jury's out...
72) Ford GT40 - Yep.
73) Jaguar MKII - ok... How about the C Type? there might more than 2 jags on the list ~
79) Chevrolet Camaro SS - A 69 convertible with the 396 is pretty cool - include both the RS / SS package and that's would one wickedly cool ride. Though you can substitute the same era Firebird - also a very cool car.
86) Ford Ka - yeah, sure... right...
87) Oldsmobile Toronado - The 66 /67 - a candidate to be sure.
88) Ford Torino - Only a very few were supremely cool.
90) VW Microbus - probably if it's the 1963 23 window version - don't forget the sunroof!
91) Toyota 2000 GT - Ok
96) Chevrolet Impala SS - what? ...the '58 with the 409 truck motor? maybe...
99) 1949 Mercury Coupe - finally a really cool car (they probably picked it 'cause some guy mentioned James Dean...) but it is cool - even bone stock.
100) Morris Traveller - erm, maybe in the next hundred...

"Cool" is much, much, more than just any type of car - it's an exact car. The exact year, color, interior, options, engine, body fabricator (where applicable), etc. etc.

From what I can tell, the Morris Minor Traveller 100 is way cuter than the Austin Countyman - but is it "Cool"???

Seems there is a vast difference in opinion of what would make up the top-100 coolest cars ever made. 50% of Car's list wouldn't make my first cut, and sorry to say, neither does the cute little Morris Traveller.

Now, not to have a '62 Ferrari 250 GTB Scaglinetti Berlineta - either in Maranello Red, Fly Yellow or that wonderful Silver is just incomprehensible.



Nor a '57 Chevy Nomad ... I mean really... It is easily, one of the most recognized "Cool" cars.

Or the Talbot Lago SS Goutte d'eau by Figoni & Falaschi... Stunningly beautiful while being extraordinarily cool.

Or the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham - hell, the '49 Sedanette is also on the list!

In my last job, I had to visit Peugeot's HQ in L'Avenue de la Grand Armee. There was a Darl'Mat on display - wonderful and in my eyes, it put the WRC cars to shame.
