This driver (German ? Austrian ?) was entered, but did not appear, in a WC event in 1970.

Who was he, were did he came from ?

I remember there was a German touring car team in the 70's named "Bickel", they competed with various cars in hill climbs and circuit racing. The cars had been painted orange, and the team was a division of "Bickel Transport", a German trucking and forwarding company.

There is a feature about "Bickel-Tuning" in german magazine Sportfahrer (5) 1978, H.9, p72-74. No Werner Bickel there! As Michael Müller rightly said, "Bickel" was the name of a trucking company and according to that article the racing and tuning team took over the name of its sponsor, probably even was a kind of outsourcing!? Chief engineer was Adolf Körber, formerly truck driver at Bickel`s and an amateur-racer. The link mentioned by Holger shows that the company is still alive. Gerd Körber, FIA European Truck Racing Champion 2003, is - if I`m not thoroughly mistaken - Adolf K.'s son.
BTW, where and when does this Werner Bickel occur in the records?

Just found a little trace of Werner Bickel
http://www.norisring.../1964/64_02.htm
He drove a Fiat Abarth 1000 in some rounds of the German Championship
Anymore results?

Just another small piece of information. "W. Bickel" came home fifth in the GT 1600 cc-class at the 1963 Happurg hill climb near Nuremberg (no car mentioned). The report in automobilsport 9/1963 describes him as a member of the Porsche-gang ("Porsche-Garde") from Nuremberg (i.e. "Snuffy Smith", W. Bickel, G. Eberle, H. Schaar, W. Port and J. Schlee).

STATS F1 shows him being entered in a ?works? BRM for Spain in 1970 , but lists him as non-participant .

I can't get a direct link to his page to work , but if you go to the site and click on "pilotes" , you can find his stats listed under B . Oh , and apparently , he was German .

Hey german friends of the forum...
Come on, let's find something more about this driver.
I found an old Trento-Bondone hillclimb programme and I found he was on the starting list on a Fiat 1100. The paper says he was from Bremen but I have to say that there are a lot of mistakes on the italian drivers, so it could easily be that he was from another city.

Is that one and the same Bickel ? There are also a number of photos of him in the 1964 picture section of this Norisring webpage and his little Abarth is clearly registered in Nürnberg.

It looks like a 1960 or 1961 vintage Bialbero to me - possibly ex-Seidel and/or ex-Zick / Plaut. Nürnberg seems to fit with eukie's earlier comments but is this then the same guy who was later supposed to live in Bremen ?

I had a telephone call with Mr. Helmut Bickel, who supported my site http://www.norisringhistorie.de with racing-fotos of his brother´s Abarth Bialbero (Norisring 1964) half an hour ago...and...I´m very surprised! He told me that Mr. Werner Bickel was the "mystery man", who intended to start at Jarama in 1970 with BRM-Formula One-car!!! But there were some problems not to solve...

Werner Bickel former lived in the Nuremberg-area, today in Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany). Last time he started at the Norisring 1991 for the Porsche Carrera Cup, Helmut Bickel told me.

Best regards!

Jürgen

Apparently Bickel was entered for the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix by the UTA Racing Organisation:

Looks like John Surtees to me, but then again: what do I know?

Yes, looks like John Surtees in 1969 in a P139.  Maybe that was the car that Bickel was supposed to drive in the 1970 Spanish GP.
