In every single-seater formula upper and including F3, I have registered 43 drivers from New Zealand.

In order to complete a little directory of 1967 drivers, I am searching for Date & place of Birth (& if required of Death) for everyone in this list.

I yet have information for Chris Amon, Howden Ganley, Dennis Hulme, Graeme Lawrence, Bruce McLaren, Graham McRae, John Nicholson & Kenny Smith. Only 8.

Here is the list of the remaining 35 :

Vince ANDERSON (born in Queensland ?)
Ian ARBUTHNOTT (from Rotorua)
Tim BAILEY
Tony BATCHELOR (from Christchurch)
Paul BOLTON (Australian who emigrated to NZ)
Jim BOYD (from Lynfield)
BRACKLEY (a man who entered at Levin but dna)
Lawrence BROWNLIE (from Kelso)
Reg COOK
Ian "Red" DAWSON
Mike ENGLAND
Bryan FALOON (from Levin, born 1944, died 1972 at Pukekohe)
Kerry GRANT (1942)
Grahame HARVEY
HETTERSCHELD (a man who entered at Levin but dna)
Dene HOLLIER (from Taihape)
Jim KENNEDY (from Greymouth)
Roly LEVIS (from Putaruru, born February 1925)
Peter "Pat" McLOUGHLIN
Roger McLOUGHLIN (his brother)
Don MACDONALD (from Matamata)
Dennis MARWOOD (from Morrinsville)
David OXTON (born in UK 1946)
Jim PALMER (from Waikato, born 1942)
Frank RADISICH (from Henderson, father of Paul)
Peter RANSOM (from Lower Hutt)
John RILEY (from Papatoetoe, father of Brett ?)
Tony RUTHERFURD (from New Plymouth)
Ken SAGER (from Auckland)
Tony SHAW (from Christchurch)
Feo STANTON
Arthur "Bill" STONE (from Clevedon)
Bill THOMASEN (from Papakura, father of Barrie)
John WESTON (from Whangarei)
Peter YOCK

Any information, fellows ? David ?
Thanks by advance.

I can't be as helpful as others will be - but:

Sadly departed include:

Tim Bailey - 2003
Jim Boyd
Red Dawson

The Hettershield you mention was George, an early FVee driver.

Johnny Riley (who is not well) is Brett's Dad.

All I can help re dates is:

David Oxton b22/12/45
Robbie Francevic b18/9/41
Jimmy Palmer b5/1/42

and sadly

Bryan Faloon d8/1/72

Good luck

Jimmy, I want to help, but am still slightly confused by your definition - a product of trying to make everything fit into a pre-determined format, I fear :)
Obviously, in the specific year you've mentioned, anyone competing in the international (Tasman Championship) and Gold Star (national championship, also to the Tasman Formula) would qualify. So presumably would competitors in the National Formula series, for 1500cc twin-cam cars. But is a 2.6-litre Zephyr Special 'above' Formula 3? Or a 4500cc Corvette-powered car?

I was about to criticise the NZ list you've published on the basis that all those people didn't race single-seaters in 1967, but on re-reading see that you didn't actually say that.
However I can made a few comments on the names there:
I doubt very much if Paul Bolton ever emigrated to New Zealand, though he did race on a NZ licence for one season - maybe two
It was Tom Brackley
and Laurence (not Lawrence) Brownlie
and Irvine (not Ian) Dawson
Who is Mike England?
George Hetterscheid (not Hetterscheld or Hettershield)
Was Pat McLoughlin really Peter? He might have been, though I don't think I've ever heard of it.
I think you're confusing Barrie Thomlinson with Gary Thomasen?

Finally, there is absolutely no logic in listing anything to do with NZ racing in calendar years. National championships ran from November (sometimes earlier) until March (sometimes later). Drivers bought or built cars in the (NZ) winter for the next, eg 1966/67 season, and changed them for the one after. Anyone moving up to single-seater classes would logically do so at the start of a new season.

And one more point
Are you also including drivers who raced qualifying cars (ie, F3 cars and above) in non-qualifying races? Eg, drivers of various Brabhams, Coopers etc in British libre races?

That's what you get when one website copies another
The original site probably got its information from one or other of Graham Vercoe's books
...which in turn were no doubt based on Peter Greenslade's reports in Autosport
Trouble was, dear old Peter couldn't bring himself to use someone's nickname, so called him Ian Dawson.
Only two problems with that:
(i) no-one ever called him anything but Red
(ii) his real name was Irvine

I was likewise surprised to see Paul Bolton as 'emigrated to NZ'...

He ran the Tasman Cup series in 1966... but from memory the car was owned by New Zealanders... then he ran again in the 1967 series, I'm sure it was the same car, but I'm having trouble remembering which car it was. David?

Bolton drove Brabhams for the Rorstan Racing Team for, I think, two seasons - including NZ Gold Star rounds (for which a NZ licence was a requirement). I suppose he lived in NZ at the time, but that's not the same as emigrating.

The story of the Rorstan 2.5 Brabhams is a bit cloudy. I think there were three, at least one of which may have had a Rennmax frame at some stage or other. And that's before the Rennmax-framed Rosrtan-Climax....
Most NZ histories of that time I can relate (more or less) off the top of my head, but I'd have to dig a bit to get to the bottom of the Rorstan cars

Jim Palmer, of course, tried to do the same thing in Australia and was thwarted by his eyesight...

I don't think he would have had to live in NZ to get the licence there, as Palmer never lived here.

And is Roly Levis really that old?

Yes - I only discovered this myself last year and was amazed.

That means he landed the BT23C-FVA at 43/44 years of age and proceeded to drive like a teenager.

Rollo was seriously good.

Yes, David, New Zealand is the one and only country in the world which gets its racing season a stickler on 2 years.
(Well, not really the only : some club organizations in the USA do the same)

How to manage this in line with the rest of the world ?

1- Register the latter half of 66/67 season
2- & the former half of 67/68

In order to have things ordered, I'll publish along the list of accounted races (with winners).
These are the ones in New Zeland :

INTERNATIONAL TASMAN SERIES (& related)
XIV New Zealand Grand Prix Pukekohe 99.75 miles (57 x 1.750) FINAL Jackie Stewart (BRM) 07.01.1967
Vic Hudson Trophy Levin 12.00 miles (10 x 1.200) Richard Attwood (BRM) 14.01.1967
VII Levin Grand Prix Levin 51.60 miles (43 x 1.200) FINAL Jim Clark (Lotus / Climax) 14.01.1967
XIII Lady Wigram Trophy Wigram 101.20 miles (44 x 2.300) FINAL Jim Clark (Lotus / Climax) 21.01.1967
X Teretonga International Invercargill 91.50 miles (60 x 1.525) FINAL Jim Clark (Lotus / Climax) 28.01.1967

Rothmans Trophy Pukekohe 43.75 miles (25 x 1.750) Jim Palmer (McLaren / Ford) 09.12.1967
I Bay Park Championship Bay Park 26.72 miles (20 x 1.336) Jim Palmer (McLaren / Ford) 30.12.1967

NATIONAL FORMULA (proper races)
Ruapuna Ruapuna ?? miles (? x ?) Tony Shaw (Brabham / Ford) 29.10.1967
Ruapuna Ruapuna ?? miles (? x ?) Graeme Lawrence (Brabham / Ford) 18.11.1967

My sources are Paul Sheldon fact books & Vercoe's NZ book.

The Bolton information I mentioned ("emigrated to NZ") is from this latter book.
Dawson being called "Ian" is from Sheldon.

OK, here’s the list, as far as I know it, of the 70 NZers who raced a single-seater of ‘F3 or above’ spec in NZ in 1967 (the second half of the 1966/67 season and the first half of 1967/68).

37 names I didn't have !
I surely miss a lot of 1967 (66/67 or 67/68) races !
Or may be I have uncomplete entry list here & there.

About some "problematic" names :

- Reg Cook. I have him entered (d n a) at Lakeside (Tasman series), perhaps with n° 26
- Mike England. Entered at Timaru with a 1.5 Lotus Ford. D n s.
- Pat McLoughlin. I read somewhere his name was Peter A. T. McLoughlin.
- John Riley started 2 single-seater races with his Sportscar Lotus (modified 18/21 'P1') to make weight.
- Feo Stanton. Entered at Levin International (Tasman series) with Rorstan Brabham BT7A. d n s

More likely entire missing races at the lower level

(1) You want all New Zealanders, not just those who raced in NZ?
In that case you'd better add McLaren, Amon and Ganley
(2) The Lakeside entrant was Ian Cook, who was Australian

- Mike England. Entered at Timaru with a 1.5 Lotus Ford. D n s.

That would presumably be Martyn England, who occasionally drove Vic Blackburn's Lotus 18 in this period (as did Leversedge and Knight)

- John Riley started 2 single-seater races with his Sportscar Lotus (modified 18/21 'P1') to make weight.

If you are for some reason including sportscar drivers in single-seater races I can probably give you another 70 names. Regardless of the origins of Riley's Lotus, it was a two-seater.

- Feo Stanton. Entered at Levin International (Tasman series) with Rorstan Brabham BT7A. d n s

Not so. At least he wasn't in the programme, and certainly didn't turn out.

Dear David

I did include Amon, McLaren & Ganley : they are within the first list I published here (with mention that I got every information on them)

About your list :

Bruce Abernethy — died 1999, according to some web site about speedway racing
Bert (Herbert) Hawthorne — born Northern Ireland 1943. died Hockenheim 15 April 1972

About Paul Bolton, this is what Graham Vercoe wrote in his "Golden Era of NZ motor racing", p 244 :

"Former Aussie Paul Bolton".

A erroneous information ?

I have no proof, but I certainly think so...

I'm fairly sure I saw him at local race meetings after the Rorstan drive finished.

Remember that if the Rorstan RT (for whatever reason) wanted Bolton to race in non-international NZ events, he had to have a NZ licence. Saying Bolton had immigrated would no doubt strengthen their case with both the authorities and the public.
But I'm sure at best he was a "NZ resident Australian"

I've two dates of birth, from different sources, for the still active Kenny Smith :
10 February 1942, or 11 August 1941.

Who knows which is the more appropriate ?

What about all other kiwi drivers listed above ?

John Riley was well enough to be driving his BMW the other day I'm pleased to say.

I assume Tom Brackley is actually Tom Brickley, who with the Tabra he raced then , moved to Australia

I had already realised that John, and passed it on to Jimmy off-thread.
I have a vague recollection that Brickley had raced in Australia before running the Tabra in NZ, though I have been unable (recently) to find any record of it.

Tom Brickley last year was still racing — within the NSW State championship, in an AF2 Kaditcha FA82A — aged 64 !

May be he is one the current long-timest single-seater racer (along with Kiwi Kenny Smith & Irishman Tommy Reid) ?

Born 1940, so, but where ? Australia ? New Zealand ?

I am certain he was a New Zealander, though - as I said above - he may have raced in Australia before his 1967 Tabra efforts at home. I didn't know him personally, but a friend of mine did, and there was never any suggestion from him that Brickley was Austraian-born.

Agreed on both counts ie still racing and NZ born.
It appears that he raced in NZ then in Australia, returned to NZ, and came back to Australia again.
I first met him early Seventies, but I havent seen him for years.

I recall that Tom ran that strange F2 car when the single cam ANF2 came in... was it VW powered?

He worked along with the Burwood Auto Electrical people, IIRC, was it Brian Morrow?

Ian Dawson is more commonly referred to as "Red" Dawson I believe. I do not know about a Irvine Dawson though.

"Red" Dawson sure had an identity crisis!!!

Either that or their typing...

As we all understand.

That was some flimsy car, as I recall. Very much a home made special amidst a field of very nice factory cars.

I'm sure Tom Brickley was born in Palmerston North NZ, can check with his niece who lives down the road from me if you like; saw Kerry Grant happily driving his truck today!

Bruce Abernethy was well known as Abo.
