During the Pebble Beach Cup for sports cars in 1956, Pete Lovely's "Pooper" (Cooper powered by a Porsche engine) lost all power when the throttle linkage to the carburetors broke. Realising that he had no tools to fix the linkage, Lovely resorted to driving with his right hand while reaching back with his left hand to adjust the stub of the linkage attached to the carburetors. He had to change gear by letting go of the steering wheel, so he waited until the car was on the straight before changing gears. Despite these problems, Lovely managed to finish 4th.
