A few weeks ago we were discussing the BBC 2 Trade Test Transmission films, ( I can't remember what thread it was on, I suspect we had drifted off topic ! ) - 160 were used made between 1962 and 1967 and shown, often in the afternoons from the start of colour television up to 1973.

Many were made by BP and National Benzole, the most memorable for me was "The Home Made Car " about the restoration of a Bullnose Morris Cowley from the mid 1920s rescued from a scrap yard.

Copies of this film are now available on VHS from 'Take 3 Video' who own the rights to the BP film archive
Along with many other interesting titles 'L for Logic' guide to the driving test 'Overhaul' - the rebuilding of a red London transport double decker bus 'Coupe des Alpes', 'Paint', and many more.

Details can be found on the website at www.vintagebroadcasting.org.uk ( it also has some fascinating broadcasting jems from radio and TV ) - copies can only be ordered by telephone 0207 928 2097 from the BP film archive
Thanks to the Bullnose Morris Club for the information

Unfortunately "Coupe des Alpes", which started the previous discussion, is a Shell film and does not seem to be available.

Richard, Your post reminded me of an incident a while ago when I saw a bunch of similar (but very recent) films, made by Swiss and aired on German satellite TV. They were mostly centered about Switzerland and Swiss but very interesting none the less- they included stories about old trucks, bibliobuses, racing and sports cars, historic hillclimb meetings up to Michael May (with his '56 winged Porsche story)...

Sounds interesting, I wonder if any of those are available on tape or disc ?

Richard, I did some searching in my feeble old mind (couple it with the fact that I was inebriated at the time of watching), but even though I could not recollect all those things that lingered in the back of my brain, I remembered enough to paste the puzzle. It was late Friday night show on VOX, and it was dctp production. The info that was 'taunting/haunting' me was the name of the show (I found it on dctp website)- 'NZZ Format' (where NZZ stands for 'Neue Zurcher Zeitung'). Here is the link to their archive: http://www-x.nzz.ch/format/archive/ (sorry, I didn't look for english section, seeing my German needs some practice anyway). Most of those features are in 'Technik' section, but there are some in 'Freizeit & Sport'... I'm not sure any of them are on DVDs they sell, but maybe contacting them would help.

Hope it helps. :)

P.S. I just noticed they list sources (Literatur) for some of them..., but commendable.

Richard, I just checked videos they sell, and there are some of them available: http://www-x.nzz.ch/...os/orderone.dbc . For example, the one with show on Michael May: http://www-x.nzz.ch/.../videos/20.html (note the 'bombastic' tagline about him winning F1 title for Ferrari).

There is no other home made car like the Burrell, of course...

Or is that off-topic?

Great service from BP video library film arrived by return of post and I watched it again for the first time in nearly 40 years, its a great 1/2 hr film with fantastic production values.

In the opening sequence a' down and out' is sitting on a car seat in the middle of a scrap yard reading Motor Sport, you can tell that instantly from the distinctive, unique, GREEN cover!

It's an impessive film sevice.

Just discovered that this film was shown by the BBC in an experimental transmission of 625 line colour broadcasting on 5 November 1962. Don't know if this means that there is a copy somewhere at the BBC, but it's doubtful.

There are literally hundreds of films in the BP library many of the titles do not give a good impression of the content , perhaps someone might have a look here www.bpvideolibrary.com and trawl through the descriptions to see if some little gems are hidden away the people there are helpful if you know what you want on a variety of motoring and motor sport subjects.

Using "motorsport" as a keyword brings up a list of 27: some bikes and boats, but I wouldn't mind seeing "Time Between":

A motor racing film charting the life of 4 drivers during the 12 days between the finish of the French Grand Prix and British Grand Prix 28/64 – 11/7/64, as well as preparations for each race in a variety of formula's inluding formula one, motor cycle racing and GT. Voice over from Graham Hill.

'The Time Between' has been available on VHS for absolutely years. I must have bought my copy at Chater's at least ten years ago. Not sure if it's out on DVD though

Yes, I think we discussed previously that a longish list of Shell films was used for these test transmissions, including this one. Shell do not answer correspondence it seems (is "dumb insolence" a proportional indicator of the size of large companies?). The Shell film library is believed to have gone to Beaulieu but they deny having this film.

A small update. National Motor Museum film library have recently confirmed they do in fact have "Coupe des Alpes".
Awaiting response from them regarding making their copies of old Shell films available.

That's interesting do let us know if you find out any more or can get a back catalogue of all the motoring/motor sport titles they can make available, there should be a great deal of archive material.
