Can anyone tell me what races, if any, were organised in Czechoslovakia in 1948? A race in Prague was scheduled for 25 April but it may have been cancelled. Although there were quite a few races in 1947 the Communist coup happened in February 1948. How much disruption this caused to everyday life I'm not sure but there were purges of the editorial staffs of newspapers and periodicals. This may have resulted in the lack of race reports in Svet Motoru in 1948 ( or I missed out when doing the research in Prague! ). In 1949 things appear to have returned to "normal" and the authorities appear to have encouraged the sport, even sanctioning the international Brno race.

A similar more drastic purge happened with the Soviet clampdown on Eastern European countries in 1956, the reporting of races took a downturn yet I believe Tatra ran three 2.5 works T607s in races between 1956-1959. Can anybody expand on this period?

Also does anybody have knowledge of races, other than those at Brno, held in the Twenties and Thirties?

And finally does anybody know the whereabouts of Karel Repa? I have tried unsuccesssfully for the last couple of years to contact him at his GTMedia site or by letter. A few years back I was regularly in touch. He could answer all these questions and more! He has the best motor-racing library for this region especially as all the National Science Museum records concerning motor/ technical matters were destroyed in the Great Floods. Why did they move them from the Museum on the hills over looking the city?!!! Karel is the undisputed expert on racing in Czechoslovakia and his collection is a vital resource for motor-racing historians. Let's hope he is well and his library safe.

Thanks, but they don't provide any new information.

Post war "Svet Motoru" appears to be the main source but I have already researched those. A short run of pre-war "Svet Motoru" is held at Boston Spa from which again I have gleaned information.

Unfortunately it looks like newspaper reports or club journals are needed but apparently many of these publications, along with pre-war motoring magazines, were "destroyed" with regime approval. That is why the collection of Karel Repa, acquired over a life time and as a private collection spared official pruning, is so valuable. Even much of his Czech material including programmes had to be acquired from private collections held in neighbouring states. Hopefully Karel is safely locked away working on the definitive history of Czech racing.

But there may be an TNFer with alternative sources; sons or daughters of past drivers or retired club officials who have retained programmes and official results etc. One can but hope.

John, I know only one "Czechoslovak" race in 1948, but it is a race in Poland (Kraków) with Czechoslovakian drivers.

I have two problems with this. The first is that German publications use different names from the Czechoslovakian for the same places, which can be confusing to others of us, and the other is the practice common in most non-English texts of applying the term “race” to what we would call a hillclimb.
However, I think the following are races by any definition.
•The Praded or Altvater event based on Karlova-Studenka and run in 1927 and 1928
•The 1000 Mil Ceskoslovenskych of 1933-35, which presents a third problem in that it is difficult to tell to what extent it was a race and how much it was a reliability trial. The fact that the last event was won by a Bugatti 35B mit Ford V8 suggests to me there was a significant speed component
•The so-called Bohdance race of 1935 - a hillclimb?
•The Mlada Boleclav race of 1936 - another hillclimb?
I’d be interested in your comments on this list :D

Thanks for the Liberecky information.

Can you tell me if Druhy Liberecky okruh, 1947 means 2nd edition? If so the 1950 race was the V ( fifth ) and there would have been races in 1948 (III) and 1949 (IV). Have you any 1949 results? I have a page which may relate to the race at Liberec but I think a page is missing. It has Dobry winning the Sports 2000cc in his Frazer-Nash in 30' 43.0.

Czech Pre-war circuit races

Kurorte Rennen ( in German ) 14/8/1921 (I) and 20/7/1924 (II), Karlsbad to Marienbad. (Not to be confused with the Karlsbad Bergrennen series.)

Stribrny Triangle, the V was held on 6/8/1933. A race was held at Schwarzbrunn on 4/7/1926. Are these the same location or different?

Hradec. 6/6/1933. I believe a III Hradecky okruh was held in 1949.

Zlinsk. 30/7/1933 This was the first and possibly only race there.

There were also circuit races, I Bohdanec and III Lochotin in 1935.

In 1936 the III Bransk and III Ceskobrodsk meetings were held.

There were, of course many hill-climbs, the famous race at Brno and the 1000 Mil, which was a race rather than a trial. A Bugatti won in 1935 but I don't think it had a Ford engine; the race was for production-type sports cars. A Ford 3.6 Coupe was second. Many Italians turned up for this one with Peverelli/ Ronchetti 6th in a Alfa Romeo 2.3 Coupe. The Fiats, including the Villoresi brothers, took on the local 1100s and one finished 10th just ahead of an Aero.

Thanks for the information on the 1948 Krakow race. If the 1940/1950s Czech races are difficult to research then Polish races for the same period are even more so. I know next to nothing except races were held at places like Krakow, Poznan and Warsaw and probably elsewhere. The British motoring press occasionally mentioned these races but they were seen as oddities. But for historians and TNFers they are now unexpected delights. The first Krakow race?

Of course I prepare a history of motorsport in Poland: first part - before WWII, second - in years 1947-1971 (later Formula Easter replaced Formula 3). Now I need a lot of time to finish a work.

In a German source ("Motorsport-Informationsdienst", issue July/1948 - many thanks to eukie for that) I found the following brief report:

"In the race for the 'Prize of the President of Poland', which had 55 classified of a total of 89 starters, the main trophy went to the victorious Czech Aero-Minor small-car team Hodac, Wlock and Mrac. In the medium class Skoda drivers were all among themselves and the final was won by Czech driver Pohl on Jaguar in front of Tatra driver Hausmann."

I assume the Warszaw race?

In 1948 (25 June - 4 July) was held the XIV Miedzynarodowy Rajd Automobilklubu Polski (14th International Rally of Automobilclub Poland).

Was the Czech Novopacký okruh (= Nová Paka circuit) also known as Krakonošově okruhu (= Krakonos circuit)?
And was perhaps the "Rübezahls-Ring" known in Germany, the same circuit?

Not exactly. "Krakonošův okruh" was prewar race among cities for cars from Stará Paka to Stará Paka (through Nová Paka also) for 10 laps 34 km each (1933-1935). From 1936 to 1938 motorcycles also (1 lap 22 km) : cars 7 laps, cycles 5 laps. After war no more races here.

some information about the Hradec race. In German the place is called Königgrätz. I found this in a German daily paper

During practice on wendsday the Bugatti driver Eimer lost control and crashed into the crowds. A soldier and one spectator were killed.
Sorry nothing more and I found no trace of other races held there before WWII.

Via Iour friend and member Hans Etzrodt I can off the results :
The race at Königgrätz took place for the first time on Juli 6, 1933 over 1.770 km course through the inner city. 30 cars were entered. A practice accident by driver "?heimer" and two other cancellations reduced the over 1500 cc racing class to just one car. No details were given about the accident.

I bought it from eBay recently and it is a very good book with detailed information and photos which it is rarity especially about the old Masaryk track! It does cover races at the current Brno track as well.

6 May 1948 race in Warsaw: looks like the street circuit still exists, but altered by a freeway through the middle:

Udjazdowski (north-south road on left of pic), left onto Agrikola, left onto Mysliewiecka, follow to Gornoslaska, and back to start.

The Bugatti will have been the T51 first raced by Prince Georg Lobkowicz in 1931 and by Pohl from 1932. Last I heard (1980) it was in the Prague Technical Museum
As far as I know, the 1947 event depicted was Pohl's last race

Very interesting picture, Terry.
It isn't Czech race but also from the same part of Europe from Poland.

The street circuit, which used in 1947, 1948 and 1951, still exists.
Course: Aleje Ujazdowskie (in that time Aleje Stalina) - Agrykola - Mysliwiecka - Gornoslaska - Piekna. On map is error - Plac Artura Zawiszy is in other part of Warsaw. Piekna street in 40's was named Piusa XI street.

On the right side of the map is other Warsaw race circuit, used in 1952, 1953, 1957 i 1958. Course: Lazienkowska - Mysliwiecka and unseen on the map Szwolezerow - Czerniakowska and back to Lazienkowska.

Could we just have a clarification on the date of the 1933 Hradec/Königgrätz races? John's post says June 6th, Hugo's July 6th. As June 6th was a Tuesday and July 6th a Thursday I'm assuming that the latter is correct, given that Hugo says Eimer crashed on Wednesday?

In addition, June 6th would have been just 5 days before the Lwow race, for which Sojka was entered, but failed to start as he was unwell on the day.

Since we are dealing with Czech motor racing history, does anyone have any facts on whether the swap of an Alta 1.5L racing car actually took place with a MB W154.
In various threads and publications there have been photos of the MB W154 outside R.C. Rowland's garage in the UK in late 1945, however nothing has been said if an Alta racing car actually ended up in Czechoslovakia in 1945.
Maybe someone on this thread can finally put the swap story to bed!!

I don't know what means put to bed. Alta race car was advertised in that time in "Svět motorů".
But I mean no buyer was found and so never left UK.

Hi Sat, Put to bed essentially means "reach a conclusion".
In various publications over the years there has been memtion that the Czech Motor Sports Club, swapped one of the two MB W154s they had for a 1.5L Alta, to meet the current FI regulations. Since the last Alta built prior to 1945 had been in 1939, it has seems to me an illogical swap.
If you look in the thread "Alta racers", Doug Nye has published a photo of the Czech MB 154 after it arrived at Rowlands garage in England in late 1945.
If you are saying that the swap never took place, one must presume Rowland's paid for the MB?

Could anybody confirm the first names of Dobry and Treybal who raced in 1949. I have Zdenek for Treybal and Vaclav for Dobry, but I have seen Frantisek also for Dobry. Were they father and son perhaps?

Today I have stumbled upon this picture in a book called 'Premiéry nadšení' by Karel Řepa. The car is Dynamic 60 built and raced by Jan Tenora with some more Czechoslovak sportscars in a background. What attracted me is an inscription in Russian above, but at the same time Czechoslovak coat of arms (or at least looking similar) to the left from it. The inscription, as far as I can see, reads 'Дружбой народов...' ('By the friendship of people'), but it is too early to be a Cup of Peace and Friendship round - according to my information Jan Tenora raced this car through 1952-1954. Maybe someone has any thoughs about this, especially why the text is Russian? I understand it was a socialist camp of course, but still a bit illogical for me.
