In the August 2004 edition of Motorsport, there is a small section in the Bill Boddy section which mentions the Danish Fano beach races which took place from the late 1910s to the eary 1920s. He also mentions that there was a commemorative run this year on the same place and same course. Does anyone have any details of this event - what the course was like etc etc?

Thanks - although my lack of comprehension of Danish makes the link slightly difficult to follow!

I have tried to look the net for information.
I found that there was a historic time trial at the 3-4/7 open for cars and bikes from before 1940. It was held on 333metre track.
I found a phonenumber so maybe i have more information later.

I got the book "Fanoe Island Trials" by Jan Clausen Nielsen. Can't get my hands on it now, sorry.

This Fanoe event, held only from 1919 to 1924, attracted some most interesting entries, including Malcolm Campbell’s 350hp Sunbeam, a big Austro-Daimler, the Carl Jorns’ Opel and aero-engined monsters such as Edward Scarisbrick’s copy of Chitty II, his ‘Scariscrow’ with Benz engine, the Stoewer-Argus, and Denmark’s Fiat-Mercedes.
Not much has been released here about this event but in this book all is revealed – the motorcycle riders as well as the car drivers, with a wealth of interesting pictures, full results, official letters (one trying to get Zborowski and Chitty-Bang-Bang there) reproductions of advertise-ments, cartoons, the lot

I got a copy in Danish language - IMO there no English version available (anymore?)..

BTW: Fanoe is a beautiful island! Great for holidays!

The October 2004 edition of Classic & Sports Car includes coverage of the Fano "recreation" meeting mentioned above. :)

Was John Duff's fastest time of the 1921 Fanoe meeting set with the 10 litre Fiat S.61 or with the 18 litre Fiat Mephistopheles? Boddy's Brooklands history (p.70) says it was the Mephistopheles. A few years ago, I read a borrowed copy of the same author's Brooklands Giants. My memory may be playing tricks, but I thought that it credited the S.61 with the win at Fanoe.

Quote from "The Motor" Issue July 13, 1921 (from "Fanoe Island Trials" by Jan Clausen Nielsen) :

-snip-

An Englishman, Capt. J. F. Duff, on his 200 hp Fiat Racer "Mephistopheles" beat all comers in the unlimited class.

(...)

England was well represented by John Duff who took over his two Fiats, the 200 hp "Mephistopheles" and his smaller 90 hp car.
The events were run over a kilometre from standing to flying starts, and it's a good record the Englishmen were successful in getting wins in both classes, making faster time than any others by covering the the flying kilometre in 21.69 sec and beating the special German racers with "Mephistopheles"

The Top 3:

-snip-

1 74 John F.Duff (GB) 18155 Fiat 21,69/165,9
2 76 Carl Joerns (D) 10480 Opel 22,46/160,3
3 69 John F.Duff (GB) 10087 Fiat 24,13/149,2
