We are thinking of going this year.
Probably Easyjet to Nice, hotel there and train every day, but other ideas welcome. ...I notice Motor Sport is advertising a trip in conjunction with Page and Moy.
How many TNFers will we see there?

There are apparently some reasonably priced B&Bs in Monaco itself, saves the daily commute - unfortuantely I have no idea how you find them!
We'll know by the end of February if the Connaught is going, if it does I hope to be there.

I would recommend Hotel Alexandra *** in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, just on the border of Menton. 65 Euro, breakfast included, a night for a double-bed room with sea view (in Winter) and I guess the train-station is a 15 mins walk.
There is a correct Best Western or similar hotel in Beaulieu with a closer train-sation I think.
I should be in MC but a month before to visit relatives!

Menton (between MC and the Italian border) is a bit cheaper and more laid-back than Nice, but there's less going on there. I've stayed in Menton at GP time and Nice not at GP time and both have their attractions.
San Remo is just over the Italian border but I never managed to get over and take a look.
Do make the time to visit the late HSH Prince Rainier's car collection - it's fairly eclectic and mostly not competition-related, but well worth some of your time. If you get the chance (i.e. before/after the meeting) it's worth walking the circuit just to get an appreciation of how barking mad the place actually is.
Train travel around the whole Cote D'Azur is very cheap, rather scenic and nowhere is that far away, so it's quite feasible to get out to nice places like Cap d'Ail for a day.

I don't know where or how much but renting a scooter would be a practical idea for fast commuting.

I've stayed at the Medicis in Nice (which has been refurbed since I stayed there in 2001) which was a perfectly acceptable 3* and handy for Promenade des Anglais, old town and station: http://www.hotels-ex...is/index_en.htm
In Menton I stayed at the Napoleon in '96, so obviously it's all changed - it was a good 3/4* then and looks even nicer now:

We are planning to drive down there, via Reims of course! After the Historic GP weekend we hope to drive into Italy and do the Stelvio Pass also.
Does anyone know if there has been an entry list published for the Historic GP?
Any pics from 2 years ago??

Entries don't have to be in until February 13th
Successful applicants will find out by February 28th
So the entry list won't/can't appear before then - say early March to be sure.

Nice will work, don't know about a scooter but sounds right. I know it's been a long time, but I used Page and Moy for 1978 GP and it was awesome. The price was reasonable, our hotel overlooked Tabac and we had access to the roof where we could see St. Devote. They also provided a coach from the nice Airport to the hotel and back to the Airport on Monday.

For those of you driving via Nice, try to find time for the Car Museum at Mougins, on the A8 , access via the services. See Mougins website and Musee de L'Automobiliste. There is always a varying collection of the right sort of cars, incl F1 and rally and supertourisme stuff, plus a large military display. There was a Bugatti 35, very original, ie looking tired , narrow tyres etc, plus a Bugatti tank among others. There is another bonus for TNFers going there..............
Also in Nice try to visit the Paul Chagal /Graham Sutherland/Picasso museum up on the hill, plus try the Renoir museum in Cagnes sur Mer. What about spectating points? My only visit to Monaco was to the 1974 GP, when I stood on the steps of the Casino. That possibility seemed to vanish soon afterwards.

As a previous visitor to the Histoique the following may be helpful
Access to Paddock no problem on Friday and after practice on Saturday & Sunday. With regards
to viewing visit the website www.acm.mc which has online booking for grandstands as well as views from each grandstand - I have found Grandstands K1 and K2 to be especially good with views of the cars exiting the tunnel, coming down to Tabac and on towards the Swimming Pool, in fact from some seats you can also view Saint Devote and see teh cars heading up to Massinet. Ther is also a Wide Screen placed on the hill to Massinet. Prices approx £11 for Saturday and £22 for Sunday

Seconded, I was in one of the Ks for GP qualifying and the F3 race in '96 and it gave an excellent view. From the top of them you can actually look down and back and see the start-finish straight too!
As for food I've had several cheap and good but unspectacular meals in the side-streets up the hill near the palace - last time I was there was 2001 there were several places doing a decent prix fixé lunch for well under a tenner.

Er, I'm going to HAVE to mention this....
If all goes according to plan, Roger Clark and myself will be sleeping on a £65,000 motor boat in Antibes harbour for the duration of the weekend and commuting into Monaco either by train or in the Shogun.
It seems as though TNF is going to be extremely well represented down there.
We MUST try to get-together during the weekend.

I will be on a mobile home site near Antibes harbour so will likely be one of "the great unwashed", on the outside looking in...........
We find saturday in casino and K1 sunday best bet for atmosphere and viewing, have had problems getting into the paddock, have had to dodge french plod a few times to make it in. Worth the effort though.
Even managed to scare the living daylights out of James (C&SC) Elliott one day, which is always worth the effort.

We saw no control over who could and couldn't get in there. Indeed, if you went into the Stars and whatever bar on the top road, down the stairs and through the bar area, you would walk straight into the paddock.
After practice, we walked down the pit road, round to Rascasse and into the paddock. WONDERFUL!
Let's hope it isn't overly restricted now that it is becoming so popular.

I think the historic meeting has always been 2 days. The GP has always been 4 days-the support races practice on friday. F1 used to get 3 days practice until standard Bernie rules.Originally posted by David M. Kane

And you dropped in on us on the way! I'd certainly recommend getting there on the Friday, or even Thursday. There were plenty of people walking down the pit lane who had clearly just gone to Monaco on a day trip, and were surprised to see all the old cars.

i have planed my first proper holiday for years !
want to take the motorhome, hoock up the trailer with either my mk1 rs2600 if finished by then, or alternatively the mk2 rs2000 racer, and drive down from germany thru route napoleaon to the
cote d'azur !
there i wanted to find a good cheap place to stay, and go to monaco either by scooter, or roadcar.
the roadcar is more for the col de turini though...;)
after monaco i want to make my way westward slowly, so that i get to pau by thursday night !
monday i want to make my way thru central france back home, stopping here and there and trashing some backroads with either of the rs...
beautiful landscape, no timepressure, wonderful roads for the right car, two of the best historic race meetings, and all relatively cheap ( hopefully ! ) !
what could be better ?

You can park your motorhome at Camping Pylone, in Biot, near Antibes, Carsten. It's a nice site with shops restaurants and even a swimming pool. The railway station is 5 minutes from the camp site with trains right into Monaco.
Scooter would be o.k. to go into Monaco but you would have a big problem finding somewhere to park you road car.

Provisional timetable is now up on the ACM website (www.acm.mc). Looks like there's gong to be two, rather than the originally announced one, post-1966 F! races this year: 1966 - 1974 and 1975 - 1978. Roll on May!

There may be little track action on Friday but it is the best time to stroll the paddock, look at the cars and chat to the owners etc.

Might be busy on the terrace and a reservation might be needed for lunch.

Antoine, with SNCF the way they are he will be there in no time. Very fast journey and very comfortable, so friends tell me.
In Nice try the little old railway up into the mountains, if it is running , 2 hrs each way, fabulous scenery, have lunch at any of the stops and get back on again.
