Hello Bob,

I knew Tom Peacock very well. He crewed for me a number of times, one of which was at the Nassau Trophy Races in 1962. As I recall, he was the SCCA Chicago Region Grid Marshall for many years. He also crewed for Ollie Schmidt, and was a good friend of Jim Scott who maintained Ollie's and my cars. He also was at RA when I last raced there in 1991.

I last talked to Tom some years ago shortly after he retired from his "day job". Unfortunately, his contact info was on an old computer, and I've lost it. He may have lived in Glenn Ellen, IL at the time. I did a white search and there are 8 Tom Peacocks in Illinois. The one in La Grange may be him.

Also try the Chicago Region's Office.

Joel Jacobs

I saw this item about Tom Peacock. Going thru some old negs on a project and I found this one of Tom at Wilmot. I am pretty sure that is Tom. I am enjoying all the stuff about the old Elva crowd from the mid-west. That was quite a group. Ron Nelson

If 16 it is Bruce Townsend, TXP Spl; if 18 it is Clarke Walser, Jabro.

The 59 OSCA was ex-Jack Gordon. The Cooper was the ex-Tippy Lipe Pooper, now modified as mentioned. It was in Kansas City for a few years with an OSCA engine. The engine was sold on and the Pooper was finally restored to its Porsche-engine spec and ran at the Montery Historics. As I think was mentioned, the 64 OSCA was ex-Ollie Schmidt who moved on to the Lola Mk1-OSCA. Ollie was usually ahead of the curve. Does anyone know what happened to Schmidt's rear-engine De Tomaso-OSCA that he ran in Class G for Jim Adams among others. If somone wants to see a pic of it, email me at provamo@comcast.net

I certainly remember the car, saw it run a number of times in 1962, and have a number of photos of it in my archive. However, the driver whom I saw drive it was Jim Scott.

You are correct. Jim Scott it was. Jim Adams was a left coaster.

Are you sure ? Jack Gordon raced an OSCA S-187 several times after that, for example at Meadowdale (july), Bridgehampton (august) or Watkins Glen (september). Maybe he had two of them ?

Tom,

There is a quick glimpse of a Maser passing what looks like a blue Elva MK II at the 1966 RA 500. Bruce Monroe and Baxter Rogers drove an Elva-Cl;imax in the race, #66, and dnf'd. I be interested in info about Monroe and his blue MK II. (And photos too, of course.)

Monroe also entered the car in the 1967 June Sprints.

Good luck, Leigh, I hope that your car is the one!

Joel,

Do you recall a Bruce Monroe, or Baxter Rogers? They raced an Elva MK II at the 1966 RA 500. Might have been blue.

Wish I could be of assistance. I do not have any shots of Monroe, in fact, can't say that I am familiar with him at all. Apparently he was one of many club racers who came, raced, had a good time, and faded away after a while. Nothing wrong with that, of course, they had a good time and that is what matters.

According to 10 Tenths, Monroe had a Mk III in 1965, chassis 100/66. Here is the link, see post 2:

http://www.ten-tenth...ead.php?t=95916

And according to Martin Krejci's site, Monroe and Baxter co-drove Monroe's Elva (#66) at Road America in 1966, while Baxter was also on the entry list co-driving Jackson Hazelwood's Mk II (#88). Here is the link for that:

Elva Reunion 2010 at Elkhart Lake. Look for info here and at the Elva website for news about a 2010 Elva Reunion at Road America, Elkhart Lake, in late summer. If you think you might go give Roger Dunbar a response.

Janos' book is scheduled to be released in time for the "Elva Reunion" at Road America in September, 2010.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before, and if it has, I apologize. Janos Wimpffen is finishing a new book, this one on the history of Elva. Based upon what else Janos has done, this will be VERY complete indeed.

Here's the rear axle from MBU309 the 7th Elva made, it was built at the end of 1955/beginning of 1956.
I think it is 100E rather than E93A - 100E came out in 1953.
The same type was in chassis number 23, registered YKJ400 in October 1956.

just read the thread - so old news, but maybe of use to someone -
the axle is 100e - [as pointed out e93a had torque tube]
the axle is essentially the same design as e93a , except 100e is wider [ 1/2 shafts not interchangeable]
the diff nose flange on the axle pictured is std 100e -
cheers
carl

ps. the axle tubes are easily distinguishable as the e93a has cast lugs either end to fit the transverse leaf spring
100e has conventional 'cart spring' spring perches

HE ALSO HAS AN ELVA FJ AND AN ELVA MK IV. HE IS LOOKING FOR ELVAS MK I, MK II, AND MK III, AND A COOPER-BRISTOL. PM ME IF YOU CAN HELP..."

My fellow blogger Jay Wollenweber kindly sent me some pics of the Elva Mk6 seen above at the recent Danville Concours d'Elegance, and says it 'may' be one of the two cars used in Viva Las Vegas, looking back in this thread I see Harmonizer 'may' own one of the films two Elvas namely #60/10. Can anyone confirm this is Harmonisers car and if so am I correct in thinking it is still Alfa powered ? Any other details on this car will be more than welcome.

The Alfa engined Elva Mk6 was here in the Vancouver area for the past 30 or so years owned by a close friend. It was fitted with Gerry Bruhl body and smaller wheels-it came from Dan Blocker and was documented as one of the cars in the movie. My friend sold the car recently and I wouldn't think there has been time to restore it to this condition. I could never understand why my friend (Harmonizer) never rebodied it.

I`ve just stumbled on this item...The first car I raced was a Mk1 Elve Climax of which I have a photo of.I dont recognise the front end of your picture and the Mk1 Elva that I drove had a DeDion rear.
We raced this car 1n 1960/61 and it handled badly.I later drove the Mk7,a so..so car and the Mk8...very good, designed by Patric Head..

If your car had a De-Dion it must have been a Mark 2 - you would have thought they would have sorted the handling by then!

The Mark 1 (originally it wasn't called the Mark 1 it was just an Elva) used a complete Standard 8/10 front subframe and Ford 100E solid rear axle.
Mark 1B eliminated the Standard subframe, attached the wishbones directly to the chassis and used rack & pinion steering but retained the solid Ford rear axle (the original cars then become known as Mark 1s).
Mark 2 had the same front suspension as a 1B but with a De-Dion rear axle.

I have a list of known and some missing early Elvas but no record of which car you drove (do have results from Janos Wimpffen with you driving a Mark 2 - Climax in various 1960-62 events).
Did it have a registration number or anything else that might help identify it?

Peter,
We were sold the car as a Mk1 and was 2/3 years old,it`s roadholding was bad up against the 1960+cars but you must be correct calling it a Mk2 as it had the Climax engine and we drove it 1960-61 before getting a second hand
Lola Climax to start the 62 season...the Lola was quite a revalation after the Elva. Thanks for you information, goes to show we never stop learning.

I'm assuming it had the 'standard' Falcon type body which was fitted to many Mark 1s & 2s, Mark 3s had their own aluminium bodywork so the difference was clear without having to look under the bodywork, so it is easy to understand why someone other than an Elva anorak would call it a Mark 1 - even the chassis numbers don't differentiate between them.
I think the Lola was a revelation to everyone including Lotus!

Er, no, in the original factory. The Mk3 bodies were only ever in aluminium, and made by the Hastings Motor Sheet Metal Works, now Moore & Tye. The body on the museum car was made 3 years ago at Moore & Tye by Alan Jenner who made the original bodies at HMSM back in the day.

This year's Frostbite fans will

be getting their first look at the

Elva Courier, a production car

manufactured by an English

engineering company.

The company has long been

known in the racing field for its

Elva Mark I, Mark II and Mark

IV, but this is its first Courier

model.

It's a small car, weighing 1,350

pounds. That compares to the

MG's 1,850 pounds, although both

cars are operated by the same

type engine and transmission.

Five Elva Couriers are in the

field thus far, including the alum-

inum body model that was used

by the company as a pattern. It

is owned by Anseth Childs and

will be driven by Bill Parham.

The four other Couriers are fi-

berglass. K. G. Peebles Jr., of

Houston, Ted Scott of Dallas, and

Herb Cloer and Troy Clem Jr.,

both of Fort Worth, are the others

who have entered the new cars.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Tuesday 3 Feb 1959, Page 19

So the prototype Elva Courier went to Texas, aluminium body (said to be by Williams & Pritchard), split-screen and all.

Bill Parham was owner of International Motors, 1500 W. 7th, Fort Worth, Texas.

Elva Courier, & B.M.W."
