I was there last summer on way home from a holiday in the Vendee region. It looked like a bulldozer had attacked the tarmac across its full width at the entry to the 1972 link road and also the exit, although I didn't investigate the area around the Courbe D'Autoroute. Previously there had been at least a ribbon of tarmac all the way up the link from entry to exit.

I liberated a bit of concrete kerbing that had been dug up at the Paradis end of the link road which will end up in our garden as a piece of nostalgia

Maybe they have just reduced it to a small bike path instead. Shame.

Seems you were there since my last visit when the digging was in progress - late June 2005 I think. I must admit I assumed (always a bad idea) that they were resurfacing the path on the site of the circuit extension. Looks like I'm wrong, in which case it's vandalism.
There was no sign of any interference with the section of the old circuit at Virage du Gresil.

No further photos, but if I manage a stop and take any on the way to or from Le Mans or Tours in June I shall post them. :)

Like Roger, I've got a bunch of pics from a meeting in the early 1990s, which I'll scan in as soon as I can get to a scanner!

I have managed to get pictures of the track's construction, which adds a nice symmetry to the site, I hope to add them in the next day or 2. Has anyone else found any photos that could be used?

I've dug out the ones I promised you, and on Wednesday was supposed to give them to someone so that they could scan them in for me. But I forgot!

I'll try and get to a scanner this weekend. The pics are from a French national F3 meeting in 1992, not long before the circuit shut.

No I cant find any info on a sportscar race there either. While on the subject, does anyone have a picture of Stirling Moss in the birdcage in 1959 at Rouen?

If you want some up-to-date photos, I can take some when the weather is good and I'm in the area. I used to work a couple of miles from the circuit, but these days it's a special journey taking up a good slice of the day. The circuit's 50 miles from my house. I may have time on my way to Le Mans, or to Tours on June 10/11 -



Kpy are you still able to grab some photos for me on those dates you mentioned this weekend?

Finally got someone to scan them in for me! It was my Dad who did it, so I'll blame him for some of them being a bit wonky - sure a few minutes with a Crop tool will sort that out! Sorry they were a bit delayed - if any of them are any good to you, feel free to use them! :wave:

Incredible photos, James! I find it hard to believe the circuit survived as long as it did, and always had troubles imagining what it must have been like in its final years. These photos show the odd combination of a fabulous yet outdated circuit with modern machinery. A great sight, I must say!

Thanks for those photos, James. As Rob says, it's nice to see some scenes from its final days. So sorry I never got to see an event there.

Have just been watching the BP film "The Time Between" which begins with the French GP of 1964 at Rouen and then moves on to Reims for the 12 hour race - the Le Mans start in the dark is just too lunatic to imagine!

I think the year was 1992 - fairly sure it was. Dad and I went over especially because we'd heard the circuit would be closing shortly afterwards. It was a national F3 meeting, with support from various saloon cars.

The picture with the backs of people's heads in it is on the 'new' link - fairly sure that's the autoroute you can see in the centre-right.

At the lunchtime break, there was a kart demo! I kid you not - somewhere I've got some (very poor) pictures of 250cc machines coming down through the sweepers. They must have been mad...

Great! Yep looks like the autoroute...I think thats the 1st pic ive seen from the 1972 link:) Those karters must have been nuts! Would have been heaps of fun but.. :up:

Looks like we were together at that meeting James ! :wave: Only time I ever got to Rouen. Indeed, as you say, national F3 and the French "Supertourisme" saloon cars , plus a few other support races....I had gone there to "help" a friend of mine who was taking part in the "Bardhal Trophy" , a series for AC Cobra replicas....those cars were mostly driven by careful gentlemen drivers, but boy , the acceleration and the noise made the F3's look like very unexciting electric cars......I remained in the pits area during the whole meeting unfortunately, since for the first time in my life I had an official "team crew" pass and I wasn't ready to waste any part of the privilege by mingling with the "general admission" folks :smoking: ....but in retrospect of course I regret I didn't take a look at the rest of the circuit. Although the sight of the cars blasting down the start-finish line before diving full-speed into the first downhill, armco-lined curve, was impressive enough....

Great pictures James, from a time when National French Drivers had to drive around Rouen but also Charade (until 1988 ?).
Anyway the Renault Sport site lists 1990 as the last year for the Renault 5 GT Turbo in the "Cup".
This doesn't seem to fit with 1992 as the year for these pictures.

Hmmmm...I'm afraid you have a good point there, chofar. Maybe James should double-check with his father about the year ?

Well, well, well - I didn't think it was as long ago as 1990! I'm sure that the only reason we went over was to see racing there before it closed, which I believe happened in 1993. So, unless the threat of closure hung over the circuit for a few years beforehand, we seemed to have jumped the gun a bit!

I'll double-check with Dad when he's back from holiday. There are some photos of me in among the load that we took, but I can't work out whether I look more like I'm 13 or 15 years old!

I think you will find the photos were taken in June 1984. One of the photos of a pack of small saloon cars coming down the hill at the photographer is of the race for the Trophee Samba Rallye, in which I took part! Pretty hectic stuff, especially trying to get 3 cars abreast through the chicanes! But the old Charade was a much better track - in fact the best I have ever driven anywhere. The single seaters look like Formula Renault.

To be fair the track wouldnt have been the same without the pre-72 part and with a chicane at six freres...

They definitely weren't taken as long ago as 1984; I'd only have been seven years old!

Somewhere I've got either a ticket, a programme or a sticker with the date on it - I'll research it further as soon as poss!

If I can find them (and sadly I was never as careful with such things as with photos!), then yes - no problem.

Dad's in Canada at the moment, but as soon the time difference is a little bit more sociable I'll text him and ask about the year. We went to Spa as well as Silverstone in 1990, and it would have been rare for us to make two motorsport forays abroad in the same year, but you never know!

I took it for granted that the pack of cars in question was a bunch of Renault 5 GT Turbo, but now even looking carefully at the pics ( which are a bit fuzzy....) it's hard to be positive , might well be some Talbot Samba's after all ( I must confess I had totally forgotten about that specific car model !!!! )

But 84 does seem very, very early....
