They are indeed Renault 5 GT Turbos, and despite my 1990/1992 confusion, I can definitely rule out 1984. The first race I can remember going to was the 1985 European GP at Brands Hatch, when De Angelis stuffed his Lotus into the barriers at Druids right in front of me. There's a picture of it elsewhere on the forum, and how the person who took it managed to NOT get me in the picture baffles me…

Yes you are probably right, I think a Samba is leading but the other cars seem to be mixtures of R5 and Golf, so it is probably a production car race in later years. Very forgettable cars anyhow!

Well, I fail to imagine a Samba leading a pack of Turbo'ed renaults on a track like Rouen.
And I'm not sure that the National Production Championship still had a 2nd Division in those days.
Forgettable or not, the Gordini cup and its followers allways provided entertainment.

Okay - Dad reckons it was either 1990 or 1991, which means that, going from the Renault 5s being on the bill, it would have been 1990. Sorry for the confusion - it's a bit sad when your memory lets you down at only 28!

Here are some pics of the 73 F2 races. This was when they fitted the foam chicane after the fatal crash in practice. I got these pics fom Motor Sport Aug 73.

I agree with you there, this is one of the threads I have mostly enjoyed viewing at!

Keep up the good work, chaps! :)

No point in diverting to Rouen les Essarts on the way home from Le Mans this year, the bulldozers have done their job and memories of blasting through the downhill section in my Elan are becoming a faded memory. Besided which a 10km detour yesterday would have involved atleast a further 5 police speed traps....

Le Mans itself is also the subject of this vandalism. Over the years thousands of enthusiasts must have enjoyed standing on the top of the ACO Welcome tower watching the wonderful view down to the pits and the sweep up to the Dunlop bridge. This year the whole concrete edifice has disappeared and the section around the Dunlop Bridge has run-off areas that make Ricard look like Lydden...

To add insult to injury the prime ACO Welcome enclosure has been replaced by a row of anonymous smoke-windowed hospitality suites. They seemed to be occupied by a handful of "VIPs" all weekend, just the occasional punter emerging out onto the balcony for a snooze in the sun. The price of progress ?

Facts and figures page is now up, including an onboard lap for 1962 with Graham Hill. Can anyone help me with some data:

Birthdates of Francois Burdet, Denis Dayan and Jean-Luc Saloman
Winners of Grand Prix de Rouen from 1987 to 1993

Thanks:)

Not sure there is a 'winner'as such .As with the GP de Pau ,since the F3000 race was dropped, the title refers to the whole meeting, not any one individual race?

This is becoming increasingly interesting

Mindful of the images of some of the restoration that has been taking place at Reims recently, it really is a terrible shame that the Rouen buildings were so wantonly destroyed methinks.

I'm off to France this weekend, but simply can't face a visit to Rouen given it's current vandalised state. It's too depressing.

Another thoroughly enjoyable article Gareth. One quibble however, I think those pictures captioned as Nouveau Monde in the 1964 piece are, in fact, Scierie.

Really hope you enjoy the pilrgimage. Do what I do every year and scrape a few square metres of moss off the tarmac at Gresil !!

Talking of which, I'd be interested to know where the chicane was situated there in 1971. If they were trying to slow things down, I don't think it makes sense to have it at the exit of the corner. The road markings on the entry, until at least recently, indicate the chicane being on the entry . Perhaps Kpy or T54 can help ?

If you have a look at the facts and figures page on my site, you will see the map of the circuit from 1971. Looks to be at the entry, rather than the corner exit.
I cant wait to go, it will be fantastic:) Ill remember to scrape the moss off:) Do any of you know a good place to stay nearby?

Gareth,

The 1971 map was what I was looking at.

It seems to show continuation of the original entry to Gresil then 2/3rds way round the track turns sharp left then right forming a chicane onto the straight to Scierie. In reality the left hand bank at Gresil remains unbroken all the way round to the point at which it joins the N138 which was why I questioned the map

I thought from the road markings at the entry to Greail (sadly this area has been resurfaced in the last couple of years so they no longer exist ) that the cars carried straight on adjacent to the entry to Gresil for about 30 metres, then turned sharp right then immediately left to rejoin the original track.

Chris

I've never seen any pictures of the Gresil chicane hence my interest.

The one at Paradis always seemed to be referred to as having been at Scierie but it's only recently that I've seen footage ( Fornula 2 Heroes DVD ) & pictures proving it was situated at the junction of the original circuit and the start finish straight, ie just after the kink at Paradis

It wouldnt have made sense to have it at Scierie....Paradis was a high-speed kink so slowing the cars down there is more practical.

Exactly my thoughts regarding the Paradis chicane, although I think it was actually situated a little way after the kink so they'd probably have been on the brakes through the kink itself

Very good additions Gareth, although in the recent update of 65-67 I'm a bit dubious about Giorgio Francia having what sounds like the same accident at the same place in 1967 as he was to have in 1975 !! I think it was in practice for the 1975 race that he ended up going over the barrier at the 2nd corner and giving the marshalls a bit of a fright. IIRC there are a couple of pictures in the edition of Motoring News covering that years race, but my copy is long gone .

cheers

A good point, well made:) It must have been another driver, his name isn't mentioned in the articles I have. I will adjust that....
1971 goes up today if Mattijs can find the time:)

:( I am so sorry to be the guy who commentated the last race during the last meeting in Rouen-Les-Essart. I think, it was in 1993 or 1994. It was a Clio Cup race. I dont have any picture of this event.

I am also the guy who commentated the last single seater race on Monthlery track ! (it was French Formula Ford Championship).

I hope that i wont be the last guy to post on this forum ! :D

I lost all my files with may old computer...
But for 1993, the last race was a French F3 championship event.
During this event, i remember that races was !
F3
Formula Ford
Formula Renault
Posrche Cup
Clio Cup (2 races)
and maybe Alfa Romeo or Supertourisme.
I have to find results on the web to refresh may memory.

At rouen, there was 2 places for 2 speakers : one in the pits and one in the curve down the straitght. I was only the speaker for F Renault and Clio. And clio cup was the last race...
I will try to remember...
