Hi everyone. I recently discovered this site and have come to realize what a great place it is for fans of the old days in Formula 1. I've spent a lot of time reading many of the posts here. Now that I'm registered I thought a good first post would be to ask if any of you could share some decent pictures of the car Clay Regazzoni drove at Monza in the 1971 Italian Grand Prix. I have only seen a poor picture taken from a distance in that years 'Automobile Year'. I think he used a 1970 chassis, and instead of the usual wing over the engine, it had some sort of spoiler or something built on it. I know that many teams would take off the wings or use smaller ones at Monza. This looked to be altogether different.
Does anyone have any good photos of that car on that day? Actually, any good photos of any Grand Prix cars in 'Monza trim' would be appreciated.
Thanks! Ray

Thanks Antonio. That is a much better picture of Clay's Ferrari than I had seen before. It almost looks like they were making the car a wedge shape like the Indycars of that era. I'll keep looking for a different angle to confirm this.
Cheers! Ray

Actully it was Ickx who raced the 312B rather than the 312B2 at Monza. The B2s at Monza 71 appear to have run a smaller, close-coupled single element wing compared to the two-element unit used elsewhere - and the B2 indeed had a pronounced wedge shape up to the seat back bulkhead in any of its guises - lovely cars both the 312B and 312B2, although the latter often lost a lot of its simple elegance of line in 72 and early 73.

I often wonder whether the cars of the era were close enough to the weight limit to necessitate the installation of ballast to compensate for the omitted wings at pre-1972 Monza - and wouldn't it be great, BTW, if there were an incentive to leave the wings off the current ugly duckilngs called F1 cars at some high speed tracks oh well, back to reality... )

In the above pics taken at Parabolica, Ickx too is in a B2 so that shot at least must have been taken in practice.

The [linked] first lap photo of the field braking for Parabolica shows Regga in the B2 with Ickx in the B behind - which in itself is interesting, as I think they only ran both variants together at Montjuich, Monza and Watkins Glen.

You can see Ickx' 312B in the actual race pic (#2) in caneparo's post (so it's not a B2 but a 312B!). ReWind's Ickx pic is a 312B2 - practice shot?

To me the 312B is one of the most beautiful F1 cars ever!

Yes, Anders was correct. I had it backwards. It looks like Ickx ran the B in the race. It is interesting tho, that while running in practice in the B2, his wing is different then the wing on Clay's B2. Ickx's is cut down from what is used elsewhere, but a normal wing. Clay's looks completely different. The pictures Rewind provided makes it look almost like the tray like bodywork seen on Indycars that year before they all tried to copy the McLaren M16. From the both of the pictures it almost looks like those NACA ducts are used to feed air to the underside of the wing/spoiler/deck thingamjig. This is probably not true since the ducts are part of a normal B2 configuration. Inlets for the oil coolers?
Thanks again for the pictures and the comments.

Here is a pic from the start. See the differences between Ickx #3 and Regazzoni #4.

Was any of these developments the result of any sort of aero testing...or try and swap., try another bit, etc.?
