My schedule for my annual Indy 500 trip last week was such that I was never realistically close to making it to the big Collectors' Show...but I did have a few minutes to spare on Memorial Day, and to my surprise the Mail Room was actually open on a Monday.

Among the handful of items I picked up (for $10) was a box full of 35mm slides. Offhand, there may be five dozen shots, all dated April 3, 1987. They are head-on, 3/4 angle and side view shots of most cars on hand for the Long Beach season opener two days later.

Most were taken at a single location underneath an otherwise vacant tent, with blue curtains in the background. Three exceptions - Mears, Sneva and Garza - were shot in the paddock instead.

Contents include:
#1 Rahal
#4 Guerrero
#5 Andretti
#7 Cogan
#8 Mears (the hated Penske PC-16)
#10 Firestone
#12 Barbazza (first CART race)
#15 Brabham (in early season all blue nose version)
#16 Tony Bettenhausen
#23 Heimrath (first CART race)
#24 Lewis (early season light blue version)
#30 Unser Jr.
#33 Sneva
#44 Robinson
#51 Theys
#55 Garza
#71 Luyendyk

Most obviously missing are slides representing Sullivan, Michael Andretti and Fittipaldi. Does anyone know if the missing cars were actually omitted, or did the former owner swipe the slides? Others missing from the entry list include McPherson, Moran Sr., Simon, Rutherford, Coyne and Nish. And how many other years were these slide sets produced?

I'm pretty sure there was a headshot series also...
