Just found a reference to a Robert W Brise racing at Brands 23 Sept 1951 in a Cooper Jap and in the same race John Brise in a Cooper JAP entered by L A Quick.

I know Tony and Tim Brise's father was a former world stock car champion of the era, Johnny Brise. Would I be right to assume that's the same chap and that Robert was his brother (thus Tony and Tim's Uncle)?

The Autosport obituary for Tony (by Ian Phillips) describes his father John as a successful 500 cc racer before moving to stock cars and then karts.

John Brise was, I am sure, Tony Brise's father (at least according to Doug Nye's Cooper book!).

The "Who's Who in 500 cc racing, 1951" lists John Kenneth Bailey Brise and Robert William Brise as both born in Dartford, Kent (1926 & 1916 respectively), and both still there in 1951. So I would assume that they are at least related and probably brothers.

According to my (siginificantly incomplete) records, Bob appeared first in a Cooper (not sure which Mk) at Brands, 21st April 1951. John appears, also in a Cooper (Doug lists Johnny Brise buying Mk V/28/51), by August - as both appeared in the same races, we can assume there were two chassis, and I would hazard that the elder Bob dragged his brother into the sport.

In 1952, John was in an Arnott - I think this was a works drive. But by late summer he was back in a Cooper. In 1953 he started with the Cooper, transferred to the new Martin Special briefly, then reverted to Cooper. Bob, according to my records, dropped out in 1952, only reappearing in a Cooper in June 1953. At which point, both start driving Arnotts! Both were reasonably successful, Johnny apparently slightly more so with a handful of heat wins, but no full race wins that I can recall.

And that's where my 500s knowledge of the brothers Brise ends. I have recollections that one, probably Johnny, also drove an Arnott sports car, perhaps at Le Mans?
