As a school kid I can remember Bonnier, Salvadori, Hulme etc, running or warming up in the straight at Wigram and Teretonga. Sort of a blast for 200m - uturn and then back down in front of the grandstands for a repeat. This went on for 15/20 minutes prior to the main race.
