Another fantastic event. I'm still wading through all my images but here's a few I'm quite pleased with...

Sir John Whitmore was there - racing again at Le Mans for the first time in 40 years - here he explains how he raced down the start straight and round the corner - to find a whole new complex of new corners - no one had told him they'd changed the track!

I'll be adding more to my pbase account over the next few days, hope you like them...

Thanks for the nice comments - with any luck they will be featured in a sort of photo essay on the event - I'm putting it together for the organisers. Yes it is a shame about the Elise. I don't usually do a lot of trackside shots and I felt a bit ghoulish shooting the sequence - especially as the driver didn't move for a few moments after the car stopped - it rolled 2 or 3 times so he was understandibly a bit shaken. But he was out and standing a moment later thankfully.

No doubt the 'should these cars be raced' debate will kick off again. Adrian Newey's GT40 was very badly damaged too - he was lucky to come out unhurt apparently.

Personally I feel whilst it's regrettable that these accidents happen it's a great privilege to get a chance to see these cars in action and to be able to get a bit of a feel for how racing was before I was born.

Absolutely top class photos on an event i would love to go to smarjoram.
That Daytona shot in my opinion is equal to if not better than some of the great photographers results that we all so cherish.
Well done fella, good work....i'm impressed

Having raced an Elite myself this year, I can really feel for the driver of the red one. Does anyone know what sort of roll protection that car had? Some Elites currently racing have a full cage which strengthens the floor as well as providing side protection. The one I race has a simple roll hoop mounted on top of the rear struts (it's an FIA period E car, and does not require a full cage), although a full cage is on the joblist for the winter!

I can't remember if it had a cage - you can see a nasty crack developing across the roof in the above shot - by the time it came to rest it had worked most of the way across.

I'll try to add some captions for you D-Type.

I've just had a look at your picture galleries, smarjoram, and the last shot of the Elite (with a very broken roof) shows that it had a good rollcage, but not much side protection. Maybe the weight penalty will be wrth it for the peace of mind.
