It was at the 1970 International Trophy at Silverstone and here is Bev preparing to execute that difficult feat whilst being passed by Dave Walker and Ian Ashley!
Bev finished in fourth place, 1.2 seconds covering the first six finishers!

Indeed (it's Tony by the way!) it is David Hepworth, but it is the car in question! Otherwise, you would appear to be correct! I am searching for a pic of Bev in the Hepworth in his "Wacky Racers" helmet & goggles!

Sorry Tony I was refering to Stephen Hepworth, who incidently will probably have a photo of Bev.

Well that's just great llmaurice, and nobody would be more pleased to see him get a drive that me, as you can tell from this thread! However, what was he doing kitted up at Brands if he didn't have a drive? Was he just demonstrating how keen he is??? And I didn't insinuate the gear he was wearing wasn't his?!?!

.....and if you have any influence at all with James Wigmore who now owns the car, try and convince him to give Bev a run in it, and let me know if it's likely to happen please, as I'd like to be there again to wave him off!

Just thought you would like to know that the reason I had my racing gear on at Brands was that I was invited to drive a screamer in the parade lap that they had.About 30 cars present. It was great to back in the seat again.

Hi.
I have spoken to Steve and there is a possibility that I might be able to do a couple of laps. This is if there is any availability in the practice sessions on Saturday morning. It would only be a couple of laps at a time as it still has the hill climb fuel tank in.But he is keen to exhibit in at the very least.

It would be a good photo-opportunity if you could at least take the car out Bev, and thus great PR towards seeing you run in something soon.....

(Pic courtesy of our own Steve Wilkinson. I can't ask his permission as he was struck by lightening 2 weeks ago, and is still not back online!)

Just to make a couple of corrections:

1. I was not struck by lightening. It was the Telephone Exchange and it took out the servers. Now back on-line after a miserable 4 weeks!

2. Bev Bond crossed the line going backwards and ended up in the sleepers on the outside of Woodcote. Despite this he was third (as pointed out by Alansart earlier) - I was quiet impressed.

Hi there.
I have just received an email from Stephen Hepworth saying that they have just got a contract to run their Ginetta G50 for the rest of the season and the first meeting is the same weekend as Oulton so they are unable to come. They have said that if someone can transport the 4 wheel drive Hepworth to and from Oulton they would love to display it.
Pity but the Genetta must come first.
Bev.

Hi there.
The only Ginetta I raced was fitted with a BRM engine and that was at Crystal Palace sometime about 1969 I believe.I can't remember what mark number was.It was a great experience and I would love to do it again.(Not at Crystal Palace though as I don't think the athletics stadium would like me to mess up there grass)I have a picture of me in the car if you would like it.If you email me I can send it to you.

Gerry was sadly killed in F2 practice at Rouen in 1973, a great lost talent indeed.

Just the other day I was watching the video of him, Trimmer, Dave Walker, Beuttler, Hunt, Morgan, Scott & co in that titantic F3 battle at Crystal Palace in 1970 that was broadcast on the BBC. The one when James 'lumped' Morgan at the end.

Andrew: remember it well! Is that film available commercially on DVD?

Sadly not Michael. Nor is the fantastic special saloon car race at the Palace from '71. These two races were shown on the BBC around 1983 as part of their '100 Great Sporting Moments' series.

I definately have both of these on videotape somewhere, so my task for today is to find them and get them saved to disc. (But then I suppose there are copyright issues! :well: )

Bev in the Ginetta G16 BRM at Crystal Palace, 1969.

Bev ran his Brabham BT28 Holbay in the Daily Express F3 Trophy race on 3rd August 1969 finishing in seventh place, having suffered all meeting from overheating. He then jumped into the works Ginetta BRM G16A for his first ever (& only?) non -single seater race for the Motoring News over 1600cc GT race. Bev finished in an unfortunate last place after losing a lot of time when he accidentally knocked off the ignition switch.
The following day Bev won both the Lombank F3 round (beating Emerson Fittipaldi into second place) and the Formula Libre race at Brands Hatch in the Brabham, a busy weekend for him!

There is a possibility of Bev making a comeback! Copy of an e-mail received from him today in response to a question raised at the last Baldock & Herts meeting re him racing a 1971 spec Ensign in late 1970 with a 1 litre screamer:

Hi Tony.
Apologies for not replying earlier but have been very busy.I never raced or tried the Ensign with a screamer engine in.So sorry about that.
One thing you might like to know is that I will be racing an F3 screamer namely a March 703.The guy has confirmed that I may race the car for him.WOW!!!.This is subject to my own expectations at a test day probably in Feb.or March next year(If I cannot come up to competetive times then I will possibly not do it) not that I have anything to prove.
See you soon.
Bev.

This was a couple of years or so before I was bitten by the bug, as a teenager I remember Bev in Formula Atlantic (must find those old photos)

This photo brings back memories of the 'old' Woodcote and of the 'post meeting debriefs' in the Silverstone club ;)

Hi there.
Great seeing you at Silverstone at the weekend. What a fabulous F3 screamer race.Dave Methley raced a very exciting race in his Merlyn coming fourth overall with the fastest lap.The only cars that beat him were powered by and FVC engine and two twin cams.Jim Chapman did brilliantly in the Gold Leaf Team Lotus car(my car in 1970) considering he only got the car recently and it was touch and go as to whether it would be ready in time.He only practiced the car for the first time on Friday and there were numerous small problems with the car namely that the spring rates on the front were wrong(to soft)and we had to stiffen the roll bar to make it handle reasonably well. The rev counter was wrongly geared and was reading about 2000 revs lower than actual. The third car from down south driven by Stuart Tizzard also had a good race.
Thanks for the pictures but could you send them to my email address.
All the best.

I agree - 1 Litre F3 cars looked so much better on the old 23" diameter rears, and 22" diameter fronts.

Bev Bond to me looks more like a boxer than a race driver. What was his background?

Here is the painting that Bev was presented with for finishing in third place in the Lombank F3 Championship. A boxer? Close but no cigar as Bev's day job was as a judo instructer in which he held a black belt!

Lots of memories of chatting to Bev and his ever supportive mum at meetings in the 70's when I was a cheeky chappie paddock marshal, little did he know how much he inspired me at the time .... I also remember spending most of a day with him and his brand new March 713 on the BRSCC Showboat. Remember that????
