Alfetta Sports Sedans and so on....

I thought id start a new thread to save messing up the Bathurst one ;). Ok quickly off the top of my head there were quite a few Alfetta Sports Sedans in Oz. The Edmondson cars, one destroyed in 79, then the car that Chris Clearihan has now which sports the 1983 GT spec look when the car was revamped. There were the Riccadello cars, one appeared circa 85? or was it 87? then the new one in 91 for the new look Sports Sedan Series. The earlier Riccadello car went to Joe Riccardo and i believe it is in Melbourne now, so a crew of the Riccadello car told me in 2003......

The other variants, as mentioned earlier the Beninca's had the turbo beast and Peter is still running a 2 litre non turbo version from time to time in the Victorian Sports Sedan meets. There was the Rob Burns turbo car which was quite fast when it went.... Rob later had the ex JPS/Robin Doherty BMW Turbo which Rob told me did 180 mph plus at Sandown and was just plain scary, he ended up selling it to the States. There are quite a few Alfetta's in NSW, Andrew Leithhead rings a bell and Michael Birks (did this car have a V8 of some description in it).......

I haven't got all the Alfettas in Australia sorted, but I think I know a fair bit.

The original Edmondson Alfetta was actually the Green / Bryson "Brut 33" Group 2 rally car, according to John Bryson (haven't checked period sources though.

As for the NSW cars, Leithhead's GTV6 sports sedan started out as the Group A GTV6 that Bond raced from 84 through 85 and became the Toyshop car for Handsford and the Pye car for Rooklyn ? Cesario and then on to Cooter and then to Leithhead. This car was destroyed at Amaroo in 91 and reshelled using an earlier shell. Most of the pukka Group A bits have been sold off and dispersed.

The Birk's car was built up by Rod Stevens in 88 and originally ran a Rover V8. From then (in the mid 90's) it became a V6 powered sports sedan for Callaghan (spelling) in white and yellow and then onto Capraro and then Papadopoulos as a sister car to their other Alfetta sports sedans. I think both use the 1.8 turbo engine that was used in the Group A 75 Turbo. (The Bond car became a sports sedan in the hands of McDonald and was written off at Oran Park in 96.

The only other "sports sedan type" Alfetta that comes to mind is the ex-Carr ARC GTV6 that was built up locally. This had been given the "coil-over" treatment but I still think had original steel panels.

Its unlikely we will see any more sports sedan Alfettas built, but I can assure you that there will be a few more "Group S" historic GT and GTVs built up over time.

My recollection is the same as Bryson's... the Alfetta raced by Edmondson had the shell from the Evan Green rally car.

The original Edmundsen Alfa was built by K&A. The origin of the shell? That is the car that crashed big time at Surfers nearly killing Tony. The replacement car also built by K&A is the one Clearihan has/had? Was fairly tatty last I saw of it maybe 20 years ago.
