oh please. So ........therefore we all own about 2 minutes worth of footage that resides at the BBC then???

As long as my 2 minutes worth doesn't involve DIY, gardening or celebrity dancing

Revealed last week one MP claimed £180,000 expenses for the year, ( £100,000 is quite typical ! ) that's on top of their £70,000 ? per year basic salary plus all the free travel warrants......etc etc etc.........

we're obviously in the wrong jobs then!!

I know I've already posted that, but I think it makes more sense in the context here.

Personally, I think it's a massive development. From tomorrow, you're doing to be able to search the entire database to find out what the BBC still have archived. In the next few days, you should be able to answer the question: Do the BBC still have the Oulton Park Gold Cup of 1955 on tape? However, as an exercise, putting their catalog online seems to be a fairly academic trial of limited use to most people. What use is a telephone directory if you don't own a telephone? So why do it?

"Unlocking our archive is one of the biggest challenges we face and, potentially, one of the richest gifts we can give to the nation."

I think it's becoming increasingly likely that the BBC really are on the road to making their entire collection available-on-demand. Lets just hope economics, lawyers and technological limitations don't slow them down too much...

Thank you for posting this update, could be very important.
There has much talk about motor racing material being thrown out for several reasons and thus there being very little left, lets hope this will give us the answer.

Very interesting......best to check all possible variations of spellings when doing a search. I've already seen programmes indexed for Innis Ireland, Sterling Moss, Mike Hawthorne and Jim Clarke. Now if only you could download!

Unfortunately there seems to be a big hole in that 'Grandstand' just gets lumped in as one, without any detail of the sports covered.

The search also still seems to be a bit messy. Grand Prix and Motor Racing end up producing completely different lists with little overlap. In fact, there doesn't even seem to be a link between the programmes tagged with the words "motor racing", and the programmes that have "motor racing" as their series.

Good work, both for alerting us yesterday and today. Yeah Searching Formula 1, motor racing, and Grand Prix i guess were the obvious ones.

Believe me you'll have a lot more fun if you type in drivers' names, team names and such. I was quickly led from "Graham Hill" to information about the tom tom & wheelbase episodes that i've read with interest about here in the past.

It's a good giggle having a look around anyways, and i'm losing count of the of times i've said woah or wow in the last hour or so.

just thought I'd resurrect this thread, as I contacted the ITN Archive for a quote this week and have just received a reply. For a worldwide distribution DVD, this deal is for five years ; the price to use their library material is £2480 per minute then £41.35 per second thereafter. Which is why we don't see much ITN material being used!!

So just to be allowed to reproduce 1 hr of film on a DVD would cost over £150,000 payable to ITV in fees alone !
So that will all sit on the shelf forever, unseen by anyone.

Words fail me!

Let's face it, ITV has to make money somehow. I can't imagine them doing so with their current "programming".

At those kind of prices, there won't be many takers, whatever the subject matter. Why not price things more realistically and get an income stream that way - some money is better than no money.
