The Castle Combe Sprint manages to produce a few rarely seen speed event cars (despite being one of the events now inundated by a massive "one make club" entry of Porsches etc, which makes things difficult for regional competitors).

Crikey - haven't seen a Citroen Visa GTi for years.

And as for "rarely seen speed event cars", Dad once did a sprint at Castle Combe in a Citroen Visa Diesel! We took it round the Nurburgring, too…

Hillclimb compounds may not be best for a Castle Combe sprint in high summer (yes, it is from the last year we had a summer...)

That's a nice, atmospheric shot of an unusual venue. Don't recall seeing many from there in the past.
When did it run until (I'm assuming it's long defunct?)

Blackpool Sprint: A straight-line sprint run under the seawall at the northern edge of Blackpool. Not a meeting that does anything for me but very well organised by the Fleetwood and District MC and attracting a big entry. A full quarter mile with a maximum speed reading at the end, which is always interesting. Lots of different classes and dozens of trophies to win. Held late July.

I assume MC = Motor Club (rather than Motorcycle Club)

Fleetwood & District MC are NOT listed by the MSA and if you visit Thundersprint you will see it is for competitors on motorcycles.

The Sprint for Cars at Blackpool was part of the British Sprint Championship in 1970 and continued on & off until 1992 - the final year there was a round at the venue. I believe that it then ran a couple of times after that before finally petering out.

You may well be right Steve, but the fact that the National Hill Climb Association http://nhca.co.uk/Home/nhca.htm list Shelsley and Prescott among their venues does not mean that those meetings are exclusively for M/Cs.

If the NHCA are running a sprint at Blackpool then to run cars as well they have an MSA permit, an MSA Clerk and the venue has to have an MSA license.

The events at Shelsley & Prescott are predominatly for cars with an invited class of motorcyles & sidecars. These run under a seperate permit from the ACU etc.

I spent quite a bit of time trying to track it down, when I still lived in Europe.

At a certain point I ran out of leads, and I had to give up...

I am very happy to see its alive and well...

It looks like it found a good home.

While house clearing I came across a copy of " Banknotes" the in house paper of the TSB.

This copy was from December 1972 and carried this report from a sprint meeting Burtonwood on the Sports page :eek:

Yes Burtonwood was a well-used sprint & rally venue just North of Warrington. It was of course an American Airforce base and once the Americans pulled out it was used extensively. It is now the site of the services on the M62!

I suspect the only reason the article appeared in the TSB house paper was the connection to the bank through their employee and not because of an interest in motor sport!

Thanks for posting the details - I wonder where the car is now?

When I raced F750 in the late 70's I spotted a piece of string running from the nosecone to the cockpit on Chris Hague's car. On a cold day he'd put a piece of card over part of the radiator. If the car started to overheat he'd pull the string to move the card and get more air into the rad.

We were talking to the owner, he's a retired schoolteacher (metalwork, very handy) He bought the car 8 years ago without bodywork, then set about making his own.
The top panel behind the seat with the petrol filler cap in was a Morris Minor 1000 bonnet, til' he set about it and re-shaped it

Looks like he's made a good job of it.

I'm glad I started racing with the 750MC crowd. Lots of self builders who could do wonders with sheet ali, steel & fibreglass. I tried my best with modifying my cars but sadly couldn't match their standards a lot of the time :well:
