'Winning' the movie

I opened the link and there doesn't seem to be anything about Winning there. There is though a tantalising shot of a fantastic looking garage with two ur quattros and what I guess is two 911/912s under car covers, along with a few shots of Bay City air show.

Is Bay City a real place then? I thought it was a fictitious city where Starsky and Hutch was set.

Well done for starting a thread on Winning though. Grand Prix seems to have (deservedly) had a lot of attention in this forum - is this now time for Winning to be in the spotlight for a while?

Nobody start a thread on Driven though please - a couple of hours of my life that I'll never get back was spent watching it (foolishly I stuck with it, in the hope it might improve), and that's as much attention as I ever want to give it.

On another, unknown, thread I shared how I got to see a day of filming at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Winning. My family was at the Classic Car Club of America car show at IMS in July, 1968 and the movie company was running cars at the time. My brother and I got to watch from the Control Tower - we were even invited to go on the roof for a while by the camera man. The 1969 Indianapolis 500 pit badge was a depiction of a movie camera with the Winning logo swept across the front and rear reels. The dvd box cover below with Paul Newman playing Frank Capua.

The world was blessed that Paul Newman made this movie, not so much because of the movie, which in my opinion is rather so-so, but because of the spark that it ignited in the heart of Paul Newman. What he did in the sport for the next 40 years was just a joy to behold. Imagine, just what might have happened if the movie had been about bowling rather than racing

My brief and slightly pissy review:


Winning (1969)

A rather lifeless racing film about a cool and aloof driver (Paul Newman), the floozie who marries him (Joanne Woodward), and the driver's cuckolding rival/friend (Robert Wagner). To some extent, this film endeavors to be for the Indy 500 what Grand Prix was for F1. Owing to a pedestrian script and indifferent acting, however, Winning largely loses in this effort. A pity, because the Indy 500 deserves a truly masterful filmic treatment. We still wait.

Members Jerry Entin and Charlie Hayes worked with Bob Bondurant on that movie as drivers and as consultants.
