Autosport TV

And so Autosport.com is launching AutosportTV, bringing video clips from various motorsports to the site, for subscribers.
Currently there are short ads at the start, but the email I received says when it goes live in a couple of weeks subscribers won't get those
As you'll know, I'm about as far from the UK as you can get, but the videos loaded quickly and ran perfectly, so big ups for that.
I've been after this kind of thing for a while, it's a great idea, well done team
Some questions:
Will it be available WITH ads for non-subscribers? Sad as it sounds, I hope not....I'd like to see more value for subscribers than just no ads etc
Where are you getting content? Producing any yourself?
Which I guess brings me to:
I'm assuming there won't be much F1 stuff, as FOM are pretty hard-core about that kind of thing I'm sure. Whilst I follow the other series, it's the F1 stuff I'd love to see the most, and that's a catch-22 I guess with the restrictions.
Anyway nice job, it looks slick and hopefully the content can do it justice (Im sure it will).

With regard the FOM limitations, im guessing this will be in place? Do restrictions take into account official press conferences and interviews in the back of the paddock?

btw: I see a WorldSBK review from Brno, does this mean we may get Superbike coverage in the news section?

I seem to remember talking about the likelihood of this a few years ago.
Let's hope Haymarket provide content from varied sources.
Some of the stuff I would want to see ...
IRL/IPS
ChampCar/Atlantics
MastersGp
A1GP
FIA Sports Cars/Endurance/GT
NASCAR/BUSCH
all that other stuff everyone else wants to see.
Most of all were ASPTV to cover any events...LIVE
'Value' would skyrocket
(on from what Mat mentioned)
Jp is guessing there is no hope in hell of any FOM content while within a sniff of Bernie's property.
If there was [pie in sky mode] send Sith and me out to the track...we'll get some kick ass content for ya [/pie in sky mode]

"Connection Error please select again"
On any video I choose
West coast of the United States running Firefox under Windows XP...
It works under Internet Explorer 7 however
-------------
As an aside, it is not quite yet "broadband television delivering high quality video clips"
these clips are too small
need 640x480 video and higher quality audio as well.. (you can hear the audio compression artifacts, and the video quality is not good when played in full screen)

watching the ads was abit annoying, for subscribers it would be nice to not have to see them, but what an excellent feature, i tip my hat to you sirs.

i would love it to have a nostalgia channel to review older videos, that would really add value to it

I'm David, the publishing manager of autosport.com.
A few answers to some of the points raised thus far:
1) The service will be available to ALL users, not just subscribers.
2) Subscribers WILL NOT have ads at all.
3) Content is a mixture of footage provided by the series, and that which we will produce ourselves.
4) We will aspire to have footage from as many motorsport series as possible...
5) Initially we will not be providing any live coverage.
6) There is still some work to be done on the player's user interface, including video size, volume control, navigation through clips etc.
This is really valuable feedback for us, so please continue to let us know what you think.
Thanks
David

Only thing is that commentator / presenter I hate his voice, sounds like his mouth is permanently full of water. I don't listen to the podcast because it irritates me so much!!
Apart from that lame little nitpick - it's a great addition!

One thing;
If I click the 'click to view' button, the first video (WRC Finland review) loads immediately, fine. And after that I can easily go through all the other vodeos as well. However, if I try to go to one of the other videos direcly (without clicking 'click to view' first) it stalls at the first frame of the ad.
I'm using IE7 on XP pro.

Very nice feature of course
Keep up the good work
Regarding functionality:
Windows Vista Business: It works fine on IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.6, with Shockwave Flash 9.0 r45. Slight issue: On fullscreen mode on a wide LCD, it cuts the lower part, whereas youtube and co show the whole image with black bars on the sides. I guess it depends on how one prefers it.
Linux (Slackware 10.2) + Firefox 2.0.0.6 with Shockwave Flash 9.0 r31: Normal mode works fine, but fullscreen not.
Edit: Bug noticed just now: On all browsers and OS's, when you first open the page, if you choose a video other than the first one, video screen shows only the first frame of the ad and then stalls at 'Loading'.

While I have no objections to autosport plugging itself between clips, that jingle which goes "Hey Hey Hey" is really annoying, especially given that it appears every minute or two between short clips. I've watched it 15 times so far and can't get it out of my head.
I REALLY hope that it is dropped from the final version, or repeats after only 5-10 clips.

More please! World Series by Renault would be a great addition as there's no coverage in the UK except very delayed highlights on Sky.

I do get ads now. I hope it is just a mistake and not a change of policy.
In general the playlist is getting better. Which is good ;). Once there is more material it would be very valuable to integrate the clips into an archive, preferably together with the 'newsroom' material and articles of the respective series.
Something to improve: the difference in volume between ads, comments and interviews is pretty annoying.

Please excuse the stupid question, but are you logged in?
On the assumption that you are logged in, this is an error, and not a change of policy. I will look into it.
Thanks for letting us know

Yes. I was logged in, and the ad is gone now. Thanks for the fast reaction!
(And of course there are no stupid questions ...)

edit, huh, just clicked thru the tabs and when coming back, the speaker and full screen buttons were then showing. guess there's a glitch that they ain't there when its the preselected tab and you navigate to the page, but only appears on clicking the tab?

I thought this is some kind of advertisement at first, but I noticed the A1 race was going and going and going without any interruptions so i eventually clicked on the sound button
I'm on firefix 2.0.0.11, it works great - smoothly, the picture stays in place. It could have been a bit bigger, in my opinion (but I understand it would mess with the main page layout - maybe a 'optional stand alone' pop-up version would be a solution. the full screen is a bit too much for this quality).
As for contest, I think interviews would be relatively really to make on your side (no copyrights and stuff) and really great to watch. It is always much better to see and hear how people say what they think, not only what they say. Also, maybe a little "historical tv" feature, every two weeks or something, with highlights from important races from past decades or in general a brief history of racing series - I guess that with the quality of your stuff you could simply record them talk and play some stuff, and that would certainly very interesting to see.
One thing I don't like it starts playing automatically whenever I refresh the main page. It is a bit annoying, and could probably kill your server when F1 season will start and millions of people will be frantically hitting F5 to know who was DQ'ed over what.
Really, it is a great feature
