Nearly, Graham (always nearly.....). Brakes re-furbed at last, now just looking for original hydraulic lines.

I hope you'll excuse and understand if I don't apologise for re-jeuvenating this thread [I've recently joined the forum and I'm still catching-up with some of the older posts], but mostly because I remember Dave and he was a very nice and generous man

Unfortunately I don't have any stories or wonderful action photo's [such as picblanc \ graham's -enjoyed your photo's on your website], but I did recently scan one of my old photo of Dave's bike with an on-board camera on it.........not quite like the modern ones of today and I don't know what quality the film would have been like, as I imagine there would have been MASSES of 'camera shake'

The picture is from 1976 - with the 350 that Dave rode so well that year, partly in the picture (which I bought from Mr Broad at the end of the season).

I do remember this. It was '78, I think, at the Brit GP at Silverstone. Tho there was onbviously no 750 race, Dave wsa helping in a Yamaha promo shoot, taking footage of Kenny Roberts - leading to some of those Silver Dream Racer moments with Chin on the tank action at less than racing speeds. It was only Dave and Kenny on track , and I also recall another take with him having to wear an orange open face helment with what looked like a cine camera strapped to the side - Health & Safety it was not. The 750 was used because Yamaha wouldnt have wanted an RG (which Dave was riding in the GP) tacho or temp guage hoving into view on their promo vid.

THe Mallory shot is evocotive too. '76 (early I'd have thought as no silencers) - looks like DAve Sleat with the Gus Khun tee in the background, one of Harold's 350's my Dad's XJ6, and me as whippersnapper holding the stand for Dave. Great memories, thanks.

Hi Oli, I have just found this web site and your post. I new your father and mother well and have been meaning to make contact for a very long time. I first met Dave at a meeting at Snertteton very early in his carear, we just started to talk and were friends from then on. I hope all is well with you and your mother and I would like to relate some of the stories about the antics we got up to and the good times we had. Any body on the forum know the wereabouts of Dave and Peter Sleat of Gus Kuhn fame, I had many interesting meals with them in a chinese restaurant on the south circular coming home from Brands Hatch.

Only just joined the forum but my Mum and Dad were very good friends with Dave when he was racing - at one of the major Donington Park meetings, maybe a World of Sport Challenge or MCN Superbike race, Dave had won and immediately after receiving his champagne he walked through the crowd of fans and gave my Dad the first swig of the bubbly and we've still got the champagne cork somewhere!! That's how much of a gent he was and mum and dad couldn't have spoke more highly of him.

I was only a kid at the time but my parents were always adamant that the loss of Dave could have been avoided as the guard rail wasn't protected properly, if, indeed at all. Immediately after the accident, straw bales were put in front of it in time for the next race but that was obviously too late for Dave.

Got quite a lot of pictures so will get some scanned and post on here soon.

Since Fazz and I were having a conversation about Dave on another thread, I thought it relevant to add the comments here also. The discussion is about the 350 Dave rode for Ted in 1976.
Potter only rode it in 1976 of course (it was a "C") and it held the 350 lap record at three circuits - I think Oulton, Brands and Mallory - and it played a big part in earning him the King of Brands title that year after the 750 let him down. Also came sixth I think in the 500 Dutch TT as a 351. It speaks volumes about the skill of the man, as it had been a long time since he regularly rode in the 350 class, which at that time was ultra-competitive! When I got the bike it had an interesting tyre combination, a 3.25 slick on the rear and a REAR Dunlop triangular on the front, which suggests to me that he was loading the front up pretty hard braking into corners! (Slicks hadn't been in long and most were still using a treaded tyre on the front). I couldn't get on with this set up at all - probably because I didn't push anywhere as near as hard as he would have done!
As we all know, Dave was a superb rider, so stylish and much respected by his peers - huge respect :up:

One of my favorite riders even have an add that was in mcn advertising the yam rd 250/400 with Roberts on the 500 and Dave with the BP/Broad yam that I have had a copy done and laminated that hangs in the garage.

I well remember accessing Olivers Mount from the mount side hairpin end one evening (Sept 80??), walking towards the jumps on the bottom straight............turning round to Barry Sheene on a DT175 (125??) with Dave Potter pillion!!!! No "lids"on, Sheene wearing a black Akai/Yamaha jacket........(so guess it was 1980??) Both waved and said "Hi"......really made my day as I was always a Potter/Sheene fan!!!

Hi, just found this post, just found this forum, brilliant. Dave was my cousin and it is so nice to see such respect shown to an absolute talent. I followed Dave right through his career until our sad loss in 1981. I have lots and lots of newspaper cuttings and was thinking of developing some form of biography after I read a short report about Dave on the Gus Kuhn website, any help would be appreciated.

There are some great photos on this forum particularly by Graham Etheridge and wondered if picblanc had his own website, more reminiscing!
