Odd topic.:) I'd say Moss lost a grat deal of hair during his career. And Lauda too...;)
But nowdys is different, with Schumi and Alesi doing commercials for Loreal or whatever...

There's Stirling Moss, Teo Fabi, Denis Hulme, Jose Froilan Gonzalez. From Stock cars, Geoffrey Bodine (in fact, all of the Bodine Brothers).

I once saw some footage of Stirling Moss with hair, and lots of it. Rare footage...
For that matter, does anyone have pictures of the said drivers where they have hair?

Richard Attwood,Gwyndaf Evans and Didier Auriol are not hairy drivers. Roger Clark, bless his soul, did adverts for hairspray. The NZ rally title sponsor was propatia, a hair loss anitidote.

Also Tony Dean, (GBR), who won that wet Can Am race at Road Atlanta in 1970, and had some success in F5000.

Dave,

The Road Atlanta Can-Am was not a wet race. I was there and it was more a question of engines letting go or folks driving off the track. Tony Dean drove a truly heads-up race and was in position to take advantage of the various mishaps and bobbles that happened.

As the race wound down, my lap chart was telling a story that most around me couldn't believe with Rodriguez being in the lead -- in the BRM-Chevrolet -- and then Dean taking the lead after Pedro dropped out. Even I had trouble with that one and almost lost my concentration. In fact, many refused to believe me until it was confirmed when we got to where the loudspeakers were actually working -- they didn't where we were in the turn 5 & 6 area.

We all hoped that the Chaparral 2J Fan Car with Vic Elford would do well since most of us were Chaparral fans. When it expired, we switched to Pete Revson in the Lola and then to Pedro. Like the 1968 Laguna Seca Can-Am race (which was in the wet and probably the one you are thinking of) which John Cannon won in an older McLaren, it was an unexpected result and one which was earned. Dean did a superb job and used his head the whole way. It didn't hurt that he had a tough little car either.

Don't forget the Austrian F2 driver Fritz Glatz, aka Pierre Chauvet, Umberto Calvo and James Bald. A hairy driver.

lest we forget (by looking through Grand Prix Who's Who) at some point of their racing career, Hans Klenk (who now has natty wig), Piet de Klerk, Ernst Klodwig, 'Pierre Levegh', Robert Manzon, Reg Parnell, Paul Pietsch, David Piper, David Prophet, Charles Pozzi, Fritz Reiss, Eric Thompson, Tino Brambilla & a host more with rapiodly receding hairlines... (latest entrant step forward Tomas Enge...)

Emmanuele Pirro seems to be getting rather thin on top as well judging by a photo I saw from the Goodwood meeting.

On a more serious side, there was the Swedish F1 driver Gunnar Nilsson (driving for Lotus), which went bald due to chemotherapy during cancer treatment. And he still drove on! Unfortunately he lost his fight against cancer soon after.....

Gilles Villeneuve was obsessed with his hairline. He thought it was receeding. He went to see a doctor who basically told him to take a pill a chill out...;)

(From Donaldson's bio)

On that subject, anyone noticed that Martin Brundle has *more* hair than when he drove? (Copyright Parnelli Jones  )

Great Topic!

I am 34 and mostly bald (ok bald). My family and I have a rallying cry whenever a bald athlete achieves greatness.

BALDIES UNITE!

Mike Hailwood was loosing his hair early too.

So was Jaques Villeneuve, at a very tender age. He seems to have more hair this year. If that's not a hair weave then I'm a chinaman!

I remember during a GP of Brazil, one of our humorists asking Roberto Moreno:
"Besides you and the tyres, what else is bald in this team?"

Nowadays, it is flagrand Emmo is... gaining forehead, but tries to hide it.

I don't know, but it probably doesn't help. I wear helmets for damn near everything... Racing, MXing, Mountain Biking, Skiing most of the time... all this increase of wearing helmets over the past 15 years sure hasn't helped my cause any...

I use it as an excuse anyway... The chicks think it legit.

Here's an old joke from some 20 years ago. Have you heared it before?

Two animals were moving in the high grass near the Silverstone track.
- Who goes there? asked the Frog.
- Guess! answered the Rabbit.
- Let's see... do you have hair?
- Long and fine!
- Do you have ears?
- Long and fine!
- Hmm, could you be ... the Rabbit?
- That's correct, said the Rabbit, but who are you then?
- Guess! answered the Frog.
- Let's see... do you have hair?
- No!
- Do you have ears?
- No!
- Hmm, could you be ... Niki Lauda??!!
