I have received the attached two colour photographs of the Team Lotus 72s taken at the 1970 British GP at Silverstone by Brian Watson who holds the copyright and they may not be used without his permission bgw[AT)blueyonder.co.uk.

I would like to identify as many of the people as possible, and wonder if any of you can help.

Obviously the person in car No 5 is Jochen Rindt, and one can see Raymond Mays of BRM in the background.

Derek Wild (a Team Lotus mechanic) has told me:

“Photo 1 (Jochen in car)

Two mechanics (left to right) - Eddie Dennis and (I think) Alan McCall

Photo 2

Far left in white shirt (pit 13 !!) - Dick Scammell.
1st mechanic (pit 14 !!) Dave 'Beaky' Simms (Jimmy's mechanic at Hochenheim),
Middle mechanics - possibly Alan McCall
Mechanic far right - Eddie Dennis

Sorry - truly - for it's easily done. The 1970 British GP was at Brands Hatch.

I'm glad you noted the presence of Raymond Mays. I was about to ID the figure as Prince Michael of Kent.

The gent stooping down next to Rindt... did he borrow his sunnies from BCE by any chance?

And whilst that can't be Reg Parnell with the headset, the gent to his right looks a bit like Patrick Head. Surely not...

Finally, you can nearly always find DSJ somewhere in these type of shots but he's nowhere to be seen in these!

What a bloomer! Can anyone tell me how to change the title of the thread from Silverstone to Brands Hatch?

Anthony Marsh bought the Lotus Mk IIIb from Adam Currie and raced it as well as being a well known race commentator.

I think that the chap with the headphones and mike is Snetterton announcer Norman Greenway . Anthony Marsh was the Brands commentator but was usually up in the box at the top of the grandstand (in those days).
Marsh used to do the pits/grid for the GP when it was at Silverstone and sometimes good old Peter Scott- Russell reciprocated at Brands.
..and while I’m at it the great Le Mans “speaker” Jean-Charles Laurens occasionally covered the French language too at British GP’s

Peter

The right-hand mechanic in photo 1 is Herbie Blash, not Alan McCall.

In photo 2, the mechanic with his back to the photographer is Gordon Huckle, who was the chief mechanic on the F1 team that year.

I assume Vanwall was speaking with tongue in cheek, because in photo 1 it does indeed look like Bernie Ecclestone (Rindt's manager) squatting to the right of the car with the shades on.

Hope this helps a bit...

Michael

Not of interest to motor racing enthusuasts but for the sake of filling in some extra information, Twiggy and her younger sister are standing next to the car in the far left of the picture.

interesting shots because they pull together a few threads that have cropped upelsewhere (ie not on TNF). In his Piers Courage bio Adam Cooper mentions Twiggy and her partner (it would have been boyfriend in those days...) as being on the scene when Sally Courage returned to the London after the Dutch GP. Piers Courage, Jochen Rindt and JYS were quite close socially and so here she is in Rindt's pit a few weeks later.

and i agree with Michael, that is Bernie, Rindt's manager. Funny how this is the first picture i can recall of them together. and the only picture of Bernie at a race i can recall between the Connaught project and the Brabham era. AFter that you cant move for tripping up over pictures of him, but Bernie and Rindt together?

anyone know of any others? 0r do i need to wait a few more days for the bio?

What are you suggesting about motor racing enthusiasts then? I'm an enthusiast and I'm interested!

The quality of these photos is something else. The look of composure on Jochen's face. Fantastic photos, a big thank you to Peter and Brian for sharing

I reckon it is Bernie with the shades on, although Jochen may well be oblivious to his presence.

That is very interesting, even more interesting would be how do you know about this? Twiggy ( Lesley Hornby )would have been 20 in this picture, you must have some inside information David ?

Younger sister seems a little 'better built' than Twiggy....
