I have, though, another date for Aurora: July 5. This was to be a double-header, and not a postponement date for July 4, but alas, I have no results - perhaps cancelled, too? Also, the first Portland Speedway event was, apparently, first scheduled for May 30, then postponed until June 14, and finally run on the 21st. The stunning thing is, both the earlier dates would've been in competition with events at Gresham Speedway, in the same city!! Strange, also, the July 26 scheduling of events at both Seattle and Portland!
There's one more thing I can add, the date for the last Yakima race was September 19; like the 14th a Washington State Fair meet. But again, no results.

You've done your homework! That's a couple dates and a few results I didn't have. For example, I knew from the point standings that Frank Wearne had to have been first or second at Yakima May 3, but somewhere I found a note about Johnny McDowell having stopped his streak, so I figured it was 1 McDowell, 2 Wearne - not quite, it seems!
I'm thinking McDowell may have won the May 10 race, or a later Yakima race. Unfortunately, I do not have many results for the Yakima races.
I seen in a 5/31 Oregonian article, that it mentions McDowell having recently defeated Wearne and being the first to "gain the honor this season." Could "recently" be the 5/10 race???... I do not know for sure.

Yes, the 7/5 race, I guess I forgot to include that. I couldn't find anything either.
Would the 9/19 Yakima race be when Del Valentine died? I assume so.

That's interesting. The article mentions Gresham Fairgrounds, which was, I believe, a different track from Gresham Speedway (aka Base Road, Twelve-Mile or just plain Speed Bowl). Never found another race at that venue.
Again, there's a peculiarity with the Northwesterners here, in that tracks were known by a number of different names, which were freely interchanged. I think Allan Brown got caught out a couple times by that, too.
I don't have much to add to the results of the 1930s. I did come across a few 1924 races at the Multnomah County Fair Grounds (Gresham, OR). Sanctioned by the AAA as there had been some drivers disqualified for participating in a beach race that was deemed a hippodrome. So when a race was held at Vancouver, WA, (Clarke County Fair Grounds/Bagley Field) -- a so-called outlaw race -- there was one being held in Multnoham County for pretty much the rest of 1924.
One of the articles talks about the success of the races at Multnomah possibly changing the configuration of the track from a half-mile to more of a banked 5/8ths.
But Bagley/Vancouver Speedway/Clarke County Fair Grounds didn't disappear as a racing venue. And the AAA doesn't seem to hold much sway in the northwest after 1924. I looked at a microfilm reel of sanctions and northwest sanctions stop at the end of 1924.
What little in the way of results I have I'll try to get up here soon.

These are the last two years I researched, as Gilmore didn't sponsor any North West cars in 1931 or prior years.
That's, again, more than I had, so thanks for the info!
Perhaps we can talk about the Gilmore cars in the NW. There was, at first, the Begg (or: Beggs?) Bros. (Walter & H.?) car from Olympia (WA), apparently built in 1927 and initially using a Rajo T Ford, then one of the first Gallivan A Ford engines (1928). Bob Scovell, the elder of the two racing brothers from Portland (OR), and others ran it in the Northwest before it made the trek to Ascot Speedway in the fall of 1929, together with Guy Deulin's fast DO Fronty T Ford. The two Northern cars made quite an impression in those early AAA Pacific Coast Championship days, and Swede Smith won a couple of main events in the Begg/Gallivan (Feb 9 & Oct 1 in 1930, both at Ascot). On at least one occasion, the two NW cars even ran one-two in the Trophy Dash, but the Deulin/Frontenac, as usual, held sway.
By 1931, both cars began to slip down the grid, as more and more competitive cars emerged at Ascot, and while Deulin invested in a new engine, the Beggs "went home" and ran with Gilmore sponsorship and veteran driver Devon Smith (no relation) in WARA events - quite successfully, as Jeremy's list shows. I lose track thereafter, but it's possible this is the car that is pictured twice in Don Radbruch's "Dirt Track Auto Racing" (pp 31 & 33) with Bob Strong up - I really can't say because I don't think I have ever run into a picture of the car before ('cept for a distance shot of the field in Lucero's Ascot book)! Especially the accident picture (p33) does appear to show the characteristic Gallivan valve cover, an SOHC from the looks of it. The car was #2 in 1928 and '29, then #92 in AAA later that year, #24 in 1930, #37 in 1931 and #8 in 1932, as far as I can make out.
Also in 1932, Mario Bianchi was at least once listed in a Gilmore Special, although that may have been the Begg/Gallivan again. Bianchi usually drove a fast Chevrolet Special, owned by Glenn (Glen?) Shaw of Seattle, during that time, or a DO Fronty T (presumably ex-Elwin Snyder) owned by John "Doc" Nywining of Yakima - I don't know if these were sponsored by Gilmore at any time. In any case, Bianchi retired from driving midway through 1933, but came back in early 1934 with a brand new car, the #36 "Red Lion Special" - this is the car with which Jeremy Gilmore made his TNF entry a few years ago, remember Jeremy? This car had an SO McDowell engine on a Model A block, it seems, but Mario drove it only a few times, seeking out other drivers for the job, like Curley Cole or Art Scovell, Steve Sahlinger, and Adolph Dans. It was #2 in 1935, and #11 in 1936. At one time, I believed this car to have been purchased by Neeley Burkitt after that, but I don't see that evidence any longer - I simply don't know what happened to it. Mario Bianchi soon joined his brother Pete in the promotional business under the Pacific Racing Association moniker, and ran a few "stock" car races until the early forties.
The most successful of the Gilmore cars was, perhaps, the Ralph Giffin (Griffin? Griffith??) "Miller" from Everett (WA). I'm not really sure of its origins, but it ran the AAA Pacific Coast Championship in 1932 as #47 with a Frontenac engine, and drivers Art & Bob Scovell, and Bob Austin in the main. On January 1, 1933, a very young Rex Mays graced its cockpit (now #39) at Ascot, before Austin returned to the job and won the "Class B main event" at the very next meeting, the car's most prestigious success. A few weeks later, it may have been involved in a multi-car accident at Imperial Valley/El Centro, and disappeared from the AAA roster only to reappear in the Northwest a little later, still sporting #39 but now with "Gilmore Speedway" signage and a new Miller-Schofield engine, an earlier version of the well known DO Cragar (although it may have been the "econo" SO version instead) Model A Ford. Art Scovell drove it to many victories and a run-away WARA Championship, although it was beaten to the owners championship by the (Fred) Roach/Miller (Marine). Thus, it carried #2 in 1934, and "Shorty" Scovell appeared on the way to a repeat championship, only to switch rides mid-season (to the Bianchi/McDowell, incidentally), and lose out to another Ascot veteran, Woody Woodford. Armond Millian succeded Scovell in the Giffin/Schofield, and apparently took the car south to San Diego's Silvergate Speedway in the winter, where it was also driven by Scovell, again (#18?). Things get a little bit diffuse, and the car may have received a new McDowell engine while in the south, returning to the Northwest for Art's brother Bob to drive, and then I lose track. Unfortunately, this is another car where I don't think I have ever seen a picture!

Yes, I remember initially posting my Bianchi photo and questions here. Thanks for all the input, Michael.
Over the years, I think I've nabbed about 3000 articles from the Washington and Oregon papers that are available online, relating to Gilmore Oil Co. stuff, as well as their racing activities (big cars, midgets, economy/mileage/endurance runs, soap box, motorcycles, airplanes and outboards). I'm still going through them all. As for the auto racing scene, I've gotten as far as recording the races and making notes about the cars when info is found, but I haven't organized it all yet.
I initially didn't think there would be many Gilmore sponsored cars in the Northwest, but there are/were many. In fact, I've read that they heavily sponsored the tracks themselves, from San Diego up to Seattle, likely keeping them afloat. Even though the had their own "Gilmore Stadium" in Los Angeles, they sponsored other midget tracks all along the pacific coast. It's hard to know if a car was Gilmore sponsored without seeing it mentioned, or better, seeing a photo. As is the case with all/most research of the past, once you think you have things figured out, something pops up that you didn't know.
I have found several articles from the northwest papers, that have images showing Gilmore livery on cars. I wish I had more photos myself, but I only have a few. The best source I've found is the goldenwheels.com site. Have you seen the website before?

The first "mention" I have of a Gilmore car is at the 7/1/32 race at Civic Stadium, with Devon Smith at the wheel of the/a Gallivan Spl. I do not have a car # for '32. In '33, I have Devon Smith driving a #8 Gilmore Spl for a few races, until switching to a new car (#61) for the 7/2 Gresham race. For the 5/28 Bagley race, I actually have two #8's listed, Smith in the Gilmore Spl and George Leonard in a #8 Dodge Spl. I have Leonard in it for a few races, then Jim/Swede Peterson until the trail ends after the 8/20 Gresham race. I do not have a #8 or Peterson listed for the rest of 1933.
More later...

Regarding the #10 Gilmore Red Lion Spl pic that appears in the Radbruch book, I'm skeptical that it is Bob Strong. I have a Bob, Bill, Clark, Cliff, Jack, Mike and Speed Strong listed in my data, none of which I have driving a #10. In '33 I have a Glenn Nelson driving a #10 and in '34 I have Dave Dippolito driving a #10.
According to a 5/21/36 Seattle Times article, Dave Dippolito purchased a car from Mario Bianchi in 1933 and the article also states Dippolito drove what he owned. I believe this is likely purchased after the '33 season. For 1933, I have Bianchi driving a #5 Chevrolet Spl and Dippolito driving a #7 Dodge Spl. I assume, the car Dippolito purchased, and the #10 car he drove in '34, is not the #5 Chevrolet owned by Glen Shaw. Unless, Bianchi purchased the car from Shaw. Or, did Bianchi own a car and drive the #5 car for Shaw. Confusing...???
I too read in a 7/23/33 article of Bianchi announcing his retirement, yet, I have him racing in the 9/3 and 9/4 races at Spokane. Also, the 10/1 race at Silver Lake. I have him retiring and coming back in other years to. He seems to have retired frequently, only to unretire, then retire, then unretire, then retire,....
Did he race in the Glen Shaw #5 throughout the '33 season, or did he race in his own car at the end?
Sooooo... is the driver in the #10 Red Lion Spl, pictured in the Radbruch book, Dave Dippolito? And, is it formerly the #5 Glen Shaw Chevrolet Spl or a different car altogether that Bianchi owned but didn't drive or did drive later in the year?

Like the newspaper pictures, the Golden Wheels site shows that there were a number of Gilmore cars in the Northwest, most of which I cannot identify in any way. The problem with Golden Wheels (like with so many other, similar sites) is, that most pictures are either not identified and dated at all, or worse, not correctly. There are a goodly number of IMCA cars on that site, which I can identify, but the source is not exactly clear - did they run in the Northwest? I have no info about that, but it's a possibility. On the other hand, the pictures may be from the Dakotas, or Arizona, Nevada, Utah or Colorado, heaven knows... or, perhaps not even them!

For me, the "fun" lies with the research. Unfortunately, I do not have many photos nor do I have any programs from these Northwest races. I'm left with the writings of reporters past and the butchering of and gazillion nicknames they gave drivers.

Possible. I really don't know; I didn't have that particular info so far.Back to the Gallavin, for the 9/5 Spokane race, the 9/8 Civic race and possibly the 9/19 Civic race, I have Earl Brunk in a Gallavin Spl. Do you think this is the same car Devon Smith drove?... the same Gilmore Spl Bianchi is later mentioned driving in '32?
I don't have Strong driving a #10, either, but I guess Radbruch got his pictures & info from first-hand sources, so I'm inclined to accept about 90 % of it. There are a few faces and cars, even tracks he has misidentified in his book, but that may be down to faulty long-term memory on the part of his sources. Strong may have driven the car only that once, and I don't have any info about him crashing at Yakima.Regarding the #10 Gilmore Red Lion Spl pic that appears in the Radbruch book, I'm skeptical that it is Bob Strong. I have a Bob, Bill, Clark, Cliff, Jack, Mike and Speed Strong listed in my data, none of which I have driving a #10. Bianchi drove a #7 Dodge for many years, so it's likely the same #7 Dodge that Dippolito (d'Ippolito?) drove in '33.According to a 5/21/36 Seattle Times article, Dave Dippolito purchased a car from Mario Bianchi in 1933 and the article also states Dippolito drove what he owned. Yes, I know he "unretired" a few times, but didn't know he came back as early as that! [grumble]Must modify my mini-bio...[/grumble]I too read in a 7/23/33 article of Bianchi announcing his retirement, yet, I have him racing in the 9/3 and 9/4 races at Spokane. Also, the 10/1 race at Silver Lake. I have him retiring and coming back in other years to. He seems to have retired frequently, only to unretire, then retire, then unretire, then retire,....
Like I said, the evidence is that Dippolito bought the #7 Dodge from Bianchi. I believe Gene Moore took over the #5 Shaw ride, so I have no idea what Bianchi was driving - his McDowell was described as new in 1934, fwiw. However, he was a top driver, so if he showed up at a track, he would have had no problems finding a ride if he wished so. Not sure what became of the Shaw/Chevrolet. In 1934, Steve Sahlinger drove a #4 that the Golden Wheels site describes as the Shaw/Dreyer, and it looks the same as when later driven by Wilburn et al, so that fits. Maybe it was the same chassis, with a new Dreyer engine? I really don't know, but somehow that car looks "new" to me, fwiw.Did he race in the Glen Shaw #5 throughout the '33 season, or did he race in his own car at the end?
Sooooo... is the driver in the #10 Red Lion Spl, pictured in the Radbruch book, Dave Dippolito? And, is it formerly the #5 Glen Shaw Chevrolet Spl or a different car altogether that Bianchi owned but didn't drive or did drive later in the year?
Yep, confusing!

Bianchi drove a #7 Dodge for many years, so it's likely the same #7 Dodge that Dippolito (d'Ippolito?) drove in '33.
Ahhh, yes. You're right. I should have looked at my pre-1932 data... what little I have.
That settles one question, at least.

In my notes, I have a "big car" race at Jantzen being mentioned in an article. I also have written, that I believed it to actually be at Portland/Union Ave and it being listed at Jantzen- a writer's mistake. That's why I wrote "may or may not have been" in my previous post.
Upon further inspection at my notes, what I thought was a "6", may actually be an "8", making it most likely the 8/11 Portland race.
I'll post the article if I can find it.

Anybody has any info about States Champions? For a long time I thought that this title as state champion some sort of advertising copy. However, I have seen a few places that had championship point events in early 20s years and later.Of course, I know it was some sort of champion local hero and promoted(for example:Earl Brunk-Montana's Champion ), but in many places they were real championships. We know anything about these champions?

In 1938, the promoters of the Elsmere Fairgrounds near Wilmington/DE staged weekly Big Car races, and counted points for a track championship with the grand name "Delaware State Championship" - only one of the drivers competing in those races qualified for the main event when the AAA made their only visit to the state that year, and he was actually from Pennsylvania. He did well, though, fourth amongst seven finishers. The AAA themselves awarded state championships on a points basis to Midget drivers in the East in the early forties, perhaps elsewhere, too. Those multi-race state championships carried at least some prestige, and are perhaps comparable to track championships at more prominent tracks today, whose regular drivers can hold their head up high when the World of Outlaws come to town. The earlier, one-race state championships are not worth recording, in my opinion.

6/18 is the last race I have for Burbank. I know I am missing several from the '33 season as Pasco won 4 races and Pixley is said to have won multiple races.

That is an error at Motorsport Memorial. It was simply an error made with the drop-down menu for facilities when the entry was made.As I understand Jeffries Ranch/Speedway in Burbank was part of 100 ACU (Auto Cycle Union) Star Championship...but I don't have any info this "championship".

What were your sources? Coast Racing News and Los Angeles Times by any chance?
From what I've turned up, Burbank was often roadsters or "mixed" (both single seat and roadsters), much like Culver City Speedway was around the same time frame.
I have no idea when I'd be able to get to it, but the Burbank newspaper had coverage as well.

Wish I had access to the Burbank paper. I found articles/race reports in several Cali newspapers, but the only paper that had more than a sentence or two on the races, was the LA Times. Finding the articles in the LA Times eventually became a challenge; looking for a "needle in a haystack".
I have never seen a photo of the track. Have you, Jim?

Michael. when you get a chance, would LOVE to compare notes with you on the Jeffries/Burbank Speedway. Here are the results I have...
Haven't we been through this before? Anyway, you have WAY more than I have on these races! Most of what I have is previews, but very, very few results. And I agree with Jim, most (if not all) of these races appear to have been "mixed" events, i.e. Big Cars and Track Roadsters.

Yes, even with the search function, finding the articles on Jefferies/Burbank in the Times was quite challenging. When I get a chance, I'll compare what I turned up, though I think they mesh with your finds. Pasco's additional 1933 win must have been on 4-23 or 5-21 as, sadly, he died in an accident in the 5-30-33 raceWish I had access to the Burbank paper. I've seen a couple of photos, neither of which show the track well. One (both?) turned up in one of Don Radbruch's roadster books.
The access I had to the Burbank paper was spotty. Their microfilm machine seemed perpetually broken, but once they let me take a reel and drive over to the Glendale library, which had microfilm machines missing zooms or with broken cranks. I was looking up info for Motorsport Memorial, but noted a few events. I'm not getting to that area as often as I used to.

What does it say for "championship" series at Motorsport Memorial now?

Richard,
What does it say for "championship" series at Motorsport Memorial now?;)
Yes!So I have taken on another meaning to!
However, while Michael is working with other project-( the most active the West Coast guys in this topic now) Ask about pre-war West Coast race tracks and their results.
Of course, Legion Ascot and Oakland a separate thread could be.
If I remember was discuss about Banning ... but it was not enough for my info about Colton or El Centro / Imperial

Not that I am aware of. I posted the results I have for this track, the San Diego tracks; Silvergate and Neil's, Culver City, Inter City and the Tri-City tracks, over
in the "Defunct West Coast tracks" thread on TrackForum. I don't think that you ever responded, at least, I cannot find a post where you responded.. Someone told me that you stopped posting there right after I posted all that.

Thanks, Jim. It's been 7-8...9 months since I researched the Jeffries track from the LA Times archive. If I remember correctly, it started off as a rodeo/horse track with visions of becoming a popular race track. Jim Jeffries was a popular boxing champ and it's possible that they thought they could get a couple "Class A" AAA races there eventually, that's just a guess though. After a couple years, the articles/mentions of auto races seems to have stopped and all I could find is rodeo related mentions. Like I said, it's been quite a while since I did any research on the track.

Ah, yes, the bell rrrrrings! I did actually stop posting on TF earlier this year, but have meanwhile returned because... well... actually, I really don't know why because the forum is as useless and the posters as infuriating as ever! Anyway, I must have seen your post there, maybe during my "lay-off", and decided that I should drop you a note - but I must've forgotten! Anyway, no harm done as you have "out-researched" me there!
