Could anybody tell me how the new ecu would affect the teams? I supppose McLaren will be less affected than the others.

I'm probably speaking for others here too, but what's the story with ECUs? I know they're going to spec units sometime but what are the details? Why does it affect McLaren differently? Any links you can provide?

The spec ECU is a joint venture product of McLaren and Microsoft. There was, as you might expect, a lot of grumbling about that from the other teams. They had to invest a lot of te$ting time coming to grips with the "McLaren way" of approaching engine/drivetrain electronic management, whereas McLaren, they presumed, did not. Some even claimed it made their cars dangerous to drive, though they might have been exagerating to get in one final verbal attack to show their displeasure. I imagine more than a few jobs are threatened... how quick would you sort out the new system if success brings about your layoff?Originally posted by imaginesix

At last the other teams will have a proper ECU. I predict competition will be much harder next season when McLaren can not use their excellent technology exclusively. Very sporting of them to give the other teams an inisght of "the McLaren way" of doing things

As I understand it, the spec F1 ecu was put out to tender. Only the McLaren technology subsidy, who make F1 ecus and supply to other teams already, bothered to tender. Marelli, who also make F1 ecus and supply to some F1 teams, didn't. The McLaren model is smaller and lighter than the Marelli.
I doubt there's much advantage to be had, except that McLaren probably understand it better than the others. But then, the software is by Microsoft . . .
Forget Lucas Prince of Darkness. Think Blue Screen of Death.

I thought like that and posted a dozen jokes on this also, but when you look at it's specs at mes web site it is PowerPC basend and runs on some "TAGOS 32-bit Real Time Operating System". It now looks like microsoft is no more than a title sponsor.
It can be seen here
