So, if you're a McLaren supporter do you drive a Merc, or a Smart or Chrysler (depending when), if you're a Ferrari fan a Ferrari/Fiat/Lancia/Alfa, or Renault, BMW, Honda or Toyota to match?

Or not? Let's see with a poll.

And if we don't support our teams with our choice of road car (I don't), what does that mean, if anything?
Are they all wasting their money?

My bicycle is Ferrari red does that count?

I did use to own a FIAT punto : and yes I chose it because of the FIAT connection to Ferrari. Suffice to say its as near as I'll ever get to owning a Ferrari roadcar :p

I own 2 Acuras and I do not support Honda F1.
Until they get rid of Reubens and the my earth dream livery I just can't.

I'm working on my wife to let me get a sports car gonna shoot for a Ferrari doubt she will go for it. Probably end up with a Merc, I really like the F1 pace car version.

I drive a VW Polo - 83.

But F1 has influence on my car choice inasmuch as I'll never ever buy a Mercedes... :cat:

Not at all, I drive a Saab for daily transport and an almost 40 year old Porsche 911 for fun.

As to your second question, no they are not all wasting money, participating in F1 is just a part of the overall brand image that manufacturers are creating.
The win on Sunday, sell on Monday mechanism is no more.

I drive a Renault Laguna, and I like the team (plus a mate of mine works for them on drivetrain, so I've gotta be supportive ;)) but my team of choice is McLaren.

My half-brother works for Mercedes and has promised me a day at Brooklands doing some advanced driving which should be fun, but I'm a long (loooooooong) way off being able to afford a Mercedes of my own right now ;)

I currently drive a VW Polo '99. I must admit that I'm somewhat tempted by the Renault Clio Sport (Red Bull fan), but I guess when it comes to crunch time I'll come to my senses and stick clear of anything French!

I support BMW and I'm driving the sportscar that Mario Theissen would choose if he couldn't have a BMW: A Lotus Seven (which in my case is a Caterham).

I'm a McLaren fan and I drive a Subaru and my next car will be an Audi. The cars previous to the Subaru were all VW's. Mercedes didn't really fit my image back then and, after years of driving a car with a trunk (boot), I want to get back to a hatch.

Well i drive a Fiat Punto or an Alfa Romeo Brera so i am in the Ferrari family :D. Btw recently i saw a red Smart which had the Ferrari badge on it, and it seemed authentic + it was something like a sport version. Do such Smarts exist?

My dream road car is a BMW M5 (E60).
But I live in Manhattan for now, so no need car for one...
Even though I'm Ferrari supporter, the brand is too flashy for me...
Although a 430 Scuderia sounds like loads of fun.
The Fiorano and Scalgietti are yes technical masterpieces, but their design is atrocious.

I drove a FIAT Uno Fire when I lived in Rome, red was the colour.

No and No.

I've been a life long supporter of Williams.

My car history is as follows: Yugo, Vauxhall Nova, VW Jetta, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Fiesta.

Given a fat cheque I'd probably go out and by an Audi RS4.

enzo fxx evoluzione anytime over the bugatti :p

During the latest season of Top Gear there was an episode where they compared the Audi TT, Alfa Romeo Brera and the Mazda RX8. They concluded that although the Brera is the worst car mechanically, they would pick it over the rest. So they would buy it for theirselves but never suggest it to anybody else.

Fair point, I do that for Touring Cars, reversing the support hoping "my" car wins. But from the point of view of manufacturers spending the money to be in F1, that's not really the idea :p

The Yugo and the RS4. Talk about two cars at opposite ends of the auto spectrum. As for the topic, I couldn't care less. I've never been influenced that way.

As a Ferrari/BMW fan I wish my car reflected the team(s) I support. I could quote super cars from both but the cars nearly in reach (Well almost!) would have to be..............

Z3 M Coupe as featured here.................Well worth viewing!

Or the beautiful F355 as featured here...............What a noise!

For now I make do with (Three kids & all) with a Nissan Pathfinder!

I would never buy any car based on anything in F1 (or any other race series). Personally I see no connection between the cars on track and cars on the road.

When I was young, single and had money to burn, I bought a friend's '86 Mondial cabrio. A car only slightly more improved than the one Time Magazine ranked as one of the 50 Worst Cars of All Time! I still have it, but haven't driven it for 5 or so years -- in large part because Ferrari's modern 2-race F1 engines are more reliable and last longer than the lump in the back of my car. Looks good sitting in the garage though.

I drive an Audi at the moment. I support Renault, but their cars are just shite.

The only time that I actually owned a car that I supported in F1 was back in 2002 when I had a Jaguar XKR.

Irve the Swerve was my favourite driver. I must admit that I bought the car just because I liked it as opposed to any F1 loyalty.

I've pretty much always bought Ford or BMW cars. If a team or driver I support is powered by either then it's a bonus, but I'd never buy a product based on who I support. I'm a DTM fan and I love the DTM Mercedes and Audi, but I hate their roadcars, Mercedes because of the styling and Audi because of the (lack of) quality and awful customer service in the UK at least.

It's been a stable proportion in this poll for some time now that less than 20% of us, crazed archfans of F1, choose a car made by the team/engine supplier we support. For us, mostly, there is no connection. You have to think there will be even less connection for all the other fans and casual viewers.

This is consistent with the fact than in 2005/6 Renault sales in Spain fell by 2% while interest in F1 went from almost nil to huge, and their hero was driving a Renault.

So the obvious reason for a manufacturer to be in F1 does not seem to work.

Marketers might say "brand awareness", but these are all famous brands anyway, would the buying public really be more aware of, say, Audi and Porsche if they entered? Or less aware of Toyota if they pulled out?

Or do the guys who make the decisions just like going to the races? :rotfl:

Yes! Of course I work for the car company that runs the car so I get a smoking good deal on our products- but even if I didn't work for the company, I would drive this car because it is a good balance of road civility and comfort with on-track performance. I carry a set of slicks and run it on road courses occasionally.

Well, I've been driving assorted Fords for over 20 years, and yes I am a Jackie Stewart fan, but that's not why I purchased them. I'm not trying to compensate for anything, so I'd never drive a Ferrari, even if someone gave me one -- it would be just ... embarrassing. If I could afford it, I'd rather have a chauffeur-driven limousine cart me around than drive myself.

People don't actually still think that "racing improves the breed", do they? Especially Formula One, anyway. It's really just a PR excercise for the involved companies.
