Fernando Alonso has continued not to condemn racist abuse directed at Lewis Hamilton at a recent F1 testing session at Barcelona.

I think this brings shame on him, the Renault F1 team, the F1 motor sport and us the fans... If we the fans don't speak out and say Alonso this isn't right, we could be seen to be as bad as him! I love F1, its my chosen sport, lets not see it harmed by racism.

Anyway a few of us have emailed the Renault F1 press office as suggested in this article by the TopGear guys. We have also setup a Facebook group, so if you want to show your support please come and join our group - Click Here.

Thanks for reading, JD.

Alonso will never condemn racism. Especially against Hamilton. Its just not in his character. Alonso only cares about Alonso.

Why ? just because of the problems with L H last year ? , oh and because he is Spanish and it happened in Spain ? Get a life , next you will accuse him of Racism just because he wont speak out . funny that in this world of supposed free speech etc , pressure is often bought to bear on people to conform to anothers point of view !

Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Question is; which of the 2 is the lesser damnation?

I think Fernando should apologize just after all the british drivers apologize for Question of Sport calling Schumacher a Nazi.

Meanwhile Hamilton can keep getting blown by the British media.

He shouldn't have said anything in the first place. That's the bottom line. Media always try to create something sensational from nothing and Fernando took the bait. Too late now.

Things like this just wheel out basic politically correct discourses to provide a fig-leaf of respectability to what is really nothing more than (yet) another anti-Alonso bash-fest, under the guise of "fighting racism".

I will guarantee that the originator of this poll has done absolutely nothing whatsoever to combat actual racism - e.g. joining the Anti-Nazi League; working on anti-racist campaigns at a local level; devoting time to helping migrants to learn English, that kind of thing.

Several of the individuals pictured who were giving Hamilton racial abuse had "Alonso #1" written on their backs. If someone was dishing out racial hatred in my name I'd want to make sure no-one thought it was happening because of me. That's not 'political correctness', that's human decency.

Whenever I read one of your posts I ask myself whether 'amath' might have been a better choice of username.

Alonso's already had his say about the racism issue, trivialising what happened at Barcelona while making a meal out of the (iffy) reports of Lauda calling him a 'dog'. Regarding the Barcelona incident as nothing more than a chance to air his own petty slights and grievances spoke volumes.

He is not obligated to say anything period. We forget these guys drive cars, they are not politicians or civil rights activists I personally don't give a s*it what he thinks about a handful fans in Spain or racism or for that matter any other political issue. I wish more celebrities would follow his example and shut the **** up. If he lives his life right and leads by example that is good enough IMO.

The display by some elements of the crowd was sad and pathetic, so why their actions should *demand* a response from Alonso is beyond me.

As we say in Forum-land "Don't feed the trolls". Had Alonso responded it would have been doing just that...and providing them with the oxygen of publicity into the bargain.

I'm no fan of Alonso (he lost a LOT of credit last year for multiple reasons) but he should not be strong-armed into speaking out about every misdeed or atrocity, however vile, and whether carried out in *his* name or not.

Now, let's put this bunch of ignorant clowns behind us, as Lewis has, and go racing!!!

I don't know why you quoted me there because you completely ignored what I wrote. If someone were abusing someone else and doing it in your name, would you not want to publicly denounce and disown them? If not, then I would suggest you lack a conscience.

Besides which, Alonso hasn't 'shut up', as you claim, instead he's tried to suggest that giving someone racist abuse is the same as the kind of mild rebuke he allegedly got from Lauda. Whether you agree with Alonso saying that or not (and I don't) you can't pretend he's 'shut up' about the matter.

No, he was not saying it was the same as the kind of "mild rebuke" he got from Lauda (which, IIRC, involved Lauda saying that Alonso was from a part of Spain where people must be very poorly educated); he was simply noting that the hoo-ha about Hamilton's abuse (most of which does not appear to have been specifically racist so much as "merely" anti-Hamilton) seems rather overblown when F1 drivers, as the focus of a significant measure of media attention, run the gamut of abuse from others all of the time.

None of which is to draw a direct equation between racism and being called a dog. The way in which some people simply jumped off the leash, as if desperate to confirm a pre-existing opinion of Alonso through a failure to understand the nuances of his words, says more about the mentality of certain F1 observers than it does about Alonso himself.

IMO, of course.

I can't help thinking Alonso is actually in the sport to race cars and win championships not to provide us all with deep and meaningful sociological insights into the foibles of human nature.

Really he would have been better off letting someone in the Renault Press Office release a statement on his behalf or kept quiet. Still he has said his piece, it's done, lets now move on.

For sure. The really silly thing in all this is that the more people shout "racism!" the more they will get it. Just ignore the whole thing, it works better than "fighting" it.

Alonso wasn't talking about racism when trivialising what happened in Barcelona, but the general abuse aimed at Lewis.

I think that Fernando could be an incarnation of Mahatma. He likes yellow, gandhi liked orange. Not too far. Gandhi did not have hair and Fernando did not have any last year either. No fists but a swordfight with words. Think about it. Maybe he is an incarnation. Who knows. If we are judging Fernando, we are judging Gandhi. Maybe somebody who knows more about Mahatma could check if my theory is right.

How many threads must we have? Alonso, the negro-carnevalistas and the whole of the Bernabau care not one bit what anyone here thinks about them or what they think about black people. It's a duck deader than Fangio v Senna.

The debate is so tedious, the positions so entrenched that only humour can save us now. Here's some satire from SniffPetrol:

And for the sake of some balance, can we have a excellent riposte from the Spanish humorous media please?

Well, I suppose Fernando saw his actions post-Hungary as following Satyagraha...

But, more importantly, does Hamilton resemble M.A. Jinnah? I suppose that the Michael Schumacher/Lord Mountbatten likeness is self-evident...

Yeah, bang on. Coz Alonso - bar the odd blip - got on with the job at hand and made a pretty decent go of it, and Hamilton threw all his toys out of the pram, whined about the equality and then the unequality when it suited him, engaged in a slightly-underhanded media campaign and generally behaved like a spoilt brat.

Oh no, wait, I'm confused. That's exactly the opposite of what happened.

Because you (and other Alonso detractors) think you know Alonso's views from a few out of context quotes, when in fact you have no idea at all what Alonso's position is on this subject. You demonstrated your predisposition on this matter long before the out of context quotes where even made public so frankly you pre judged him because you don't like him and no matter what he said you would find reason to fault him and at the same time cling to your unjustified views. OK?

I have made no mention of Alonso's view in my post. It is no secret that I do not like him, but the thread was pointless and I gave my reasons why. Simple as that. You're being too sensitive.

What comments did I make when Alonso made any sort of statement on the matter? Point to my posts where I faulted him "no matter what he said". You won't find any, because there are none.

Perhaps I miss understood, from your post it looked as if you somehow had & understood Alonso's view, I don't think anyone on the bb even knows Alonso's view on this so to judge him one way or the other based on nothing is wrong IMHO, but as I say I must be miss understanding your meaning in the line quoted above.

Just because someone does not speak out against something does not mean they promote it. Unless you subscribe the GWB way of thinking “those that are not with us are automatically against us.”

You're damn right ... Lewis by himself got two FIA investigations on his team ...

Monaco and Hungary anyone?
