Hi all

You may be intersted to hear that the Telegraph's motoring contributor Simon Arron reported in Saturday's edition that 'The streets of Liverpool will echo to the sound of classic racing cars on July 26/27'.

Simon reports that organisers hope to attract cars and stars from 1955 to 1962 - the era of Aintree hosting a number of notable GPs. Further info is available from Mike Ashcroft at the Aintree Circuit Club on 0151 525 9314.

Sounds like a good reason for a TNF get together! Travellers from afar will be made welcome by the North West TNF faction - who meet tonight. Our numbers have swelled to twenty, including none other than Simon Arron himself!

Don't know what you southern boys do to make him embark on a 450 mile round trip just to have a good night up here....

Wonder how many cars they will attract? It is the same weekend as the Silverstone Classic.

I wouldn't hold your breath - the last event that they tried to organise fell through!

It is also the same week-end that Liverpool Motor Club have their double-header week-end of hillclimbing at Loton Park - so not much chance of support from that direction.

Rob, I think you are letting this Southern Softie off lightly! I would have thought he would be driving one of those underpowered 1.6 litre Capris - all show & no go!

As I understand it from my contacts back home hub caps are no longer nicked by the Scallies - they take the whole wheel!

Yes Steve...another rather negative comment!

Motorsport News took a rather different approach...the proposed event was featured in their COMMENT lead story in the 20th February edition and to quote:"...it can give the general public the chance to get close to the sights and sounds of motorsport.....then that will be to the benefit of everyone".

These types of events take a huge amount of organisation and are often up against opposing forces and it doesn't help if people like yourself, a supposed enthusiast, cast doubt on whether an event will actually take place.

Passing unfounded and unsubstanciated comments/rumours can only do harm for events....similar comments were passed regarding the Festival of Motorsport, which I organised in 2004, by individuals, such as yourself, who were not privy to any of the facts but still chose to make negative comments.

For the record, since the Tophams put Aintree Racecourse up for sale in 1963, Aintree Circuit Club were solely responsible for maintaining the Club Motor Racing Circuit at Aintree for a period of 35 years...an achievement unmatched by any amateur club.

We also raised the £30 000 required to resurface the Sefton Straight to enable the Grand Prix circuit to be used for the Festival....this stretch of tarmac is more familiar as the current competitors paddock, which has provided a tremendous improvement to existing events, despite Liverpool Motor Club, as principal beneficiary, refusing to contribute a single penny to the cost!

The Loton Park event scheduled on the proposed date for the Formula 1 event in Liverpool is primarily for the benefit of the participants whilst the Liverpool event will celebrate the region's Grand Prix and Formula 1 motor racing heritage, by putting on a show that the general public (and no doubt those motorsport enthusiasts who will also attend) will find highly entertaining and informative.

The event will also showcase the current automotive/motorsport cluster in the northwest which includes the Ford World Rally Team, Bentley, Jaguar/Land-Rover etc.

Yes....wishful thinking.

We have been in communication with Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart since the idea of running a City Centre event was mooted with regard to a W196 with Stirling driving.

Nothing has been finalised yet as you will appreciate there are lots of behind the scenes details to be attended to but you may see a very nice display of historic F1 cars in and around the new £1Billion Liverpool One Retail development....check out:

I would willingly travel up to Liverpool to see such an event as described.

Ages ago we "southern softies" arranged something similar in Basildon

made a temporary closed road circuit

Had Sir Sterling "parading" flat out down the dual carriageways GT40's etc too

it was so popular I had trouble parking my Lambo 5000S...honest :cool:

As for the comments in Motorsport News they are more than likely coloured by the source, who in my opinion is far from reliable! :mad:

UPDATE:

The event now has the support of the Executive Management Team of Liverpool City Council following a report prepared by the Council's Highways Management Team that resulted from a planning meeting with representatives of the organising group.

At the moment, Joint Agency Meetings are taking place with the Police, Fire, Ambulance, NHS, Highways Department and their respective Major Event Teams, to agree on the most suitable location and route for the event.

Amongst others, a suitable waterfront location/course has already been identified close to a World Class display/exhibition facility.

This will primarily be focussed on reducing impact on traffic flow and safety considerations.

Liverpool City Council and Merseytravel's Event Management Experts have estimated that in the region of 100 000 would attend such an event, bearing in mind that the previous weekend the event will be promoted to an audience of about 1 Million people who will be in Liverpool for the start of the Tall Ships Race and a further 250 000 visitors will be in the region for the Open Golf, which is being staged at Royal Birkdale, near Southport (about 17 miles from Liverpool City Centre).

Further information will be released through the usual channels over the next few weeks.

The event now has the provisional yes to use the King's Waterfront area next to the new Liverpool Arena and Convention Centre.

The route will use Queens Wharf and King's Parade, which runs alongside the river.

This will be used for parades and demonstrations in both directions, over a route of approx 1.2Km

A paddock area will be created next to this area overlooking the river.

Details are currently being finalised with the site managers and representatives of Liverpool City Council and other agencies.

Marshals and Stewards will be required for the static display areas (Saturday and Sunday) and for the demonstrations runs on the Sunday evening (provisionally between 7 and 9pm).

The event will be run by Longton & District Motor Club and the Aintree Circuit Club, with assistance from other motor sport organisations in the North West.

time scale is getting a little tight isn't it?

i would have loved to do the run in my home town in our Cooper (oldest running Cooper Single seater) but the Calendar is allready over crowded and we are committed to another event in France that weekend.

I'm afraid it's the usual problem of having to deal with numerous agencies who all have there own agenda plus nobody want's to take responsibility for anything these days.

The event will also be supported by the North West Automotive Alliance (Industry group) and will showcase the NW's Motorsport Industry - Ford World Rally team, Juno Cars etc

If anyone needs another excuse to visit, I believe The Australian Pink Floyd are appearing at the Liverpool Arena that night. :clap:

I will have to miss it though weekend tickets bought for the Silverston Classic.

Off topic, but they certainly are, I'll be in Liverpool for the gig. The race car parade will be a great bonus.
Saw the Aussies in Ipswich last night ( This band are managed by Chas Cole of CMP Entertainment, who's son James won the NW FF Kent championship last year and now races in National FF for Jamun. Chas also manages Champcar driver Dan Clarke). Unbelievable light show and note perfect Pink Floyd, David Gilmour is so impressed he booked them to play at his own 50th birthday party!

We were unfortunately mislead re the authorisation process to use the preferred venue - King's Waterfront.

We were given the provisional go-ahead (by the Managing Agent) in early April 2008 but this was then referred to English Parnerships, who own the site. Other major events (such as the Tall Ships Race which took place the week before the proposed dates) have taken priority plus Sir Stirling Moss became unavailable for the 26/27th July, so things were pretty much beyond our control.

English Partnerships are now in the process of organising a meeting with us and the other authorised users of the site within the next 2 weeks but we are now looking at next year for a street demonstration.

However, we will be organising a Gala Dinner, expected to be at Aintree, overlooking the Grand Prix Circuit, to at least celebrate the regions Grand Prix heritage within the Capital of Culture year.

This again depends on the availability of Stirling, who we now understand is having a knee operation early November, so it doesn't get any easier!, as his bookings have now been brought forward to Sept/Oct.
