Lauda won the championship in it.

Vince H.

I think I may have some crossed wires Vince ?

To recap are we saying that Niki Lauda won in a 312T in 1975 with reprised tube with stressed skin chassis ?

and that all subsequent chassis

312 T2 1976 - 77

T3 1978

T4 1979

T5 1980

and 126CK 1981 featured the same method of chassis construction ?

Thanking you in anticipation :-)

Yes, according to the book. By 1982, the 126 C2 was alloy monocoque.

If all that is the case then reprised tube and stressed aluminium chassis were not a complete disaster from 1975 - 1979 :-)

Quite well too: http://www.ultimatec...pazzaneve-.html

The owner has a particular interest for unusual Grand Prix cars. He also has the Life F1 car and also used to own one of the Tecnos.

I knew I'd regret circumstances conspiring against me to get to Goodwood :-)

Thanks for sharing :-)

One thing I can vouch for - its damn noisy.

I followed it around the Old town in the Bergamo Historic GP in 2010.
Prior to that while he warmed it up in the paddock it was deafening.

My wife suggested as he had finished, switched off, that perhaps I needed to fire up the TC in the back of my car, just to check it out.

Enter one very irate lady museum curator, who assumed it was me that had deafened every one for the previous 15 minutes.

A good job I do not speak Italian !

For photos of the Ferrari, (and much more), take a look at their website.

I have already professed my love of 2CV's as visual beauties else where, and I may well be a sucker for the low polar momentum school of thought but if there was one Formula One Car I'd love to drive this is it :-)

Posted Image

Thanks to a hitherto unimaginable set of circumstances involving Ted Walker, Hall & Hall, mixed with a dose of galvanic corrosion twixt wheel nuts and wheels, Christmas came early last week when I became acquainted with Spazzaneve.

Posted Image

I was disappointed to learn that I'll probably never drive the car if only for the simple reason that I must, either be at least a foot or more taller than Art Merzario or, enjoy industrial quantities of Tiramisu a little too regularly.

Posted Image

A consequence, of either or a combination of both, is that I 'll only ever be able to sit on #009, rather than in it :rotfl:

Posted Image

Reading hand writing has never been my strong point, least of all my own, wondering if any Italian speaking TNFers would be so kind as to translate Mauro Forghieri dedication above ?

Posted Image

Also does anybody recognise these signatures ?

Relevant answers maybe credited and used in a forthcoming blog.

That'd be chief mechanic Giulio Borsari's signature, I'd reckon.

Wouldn't be too difficult to be a foot taller than Arturo Merzario, either...

Does someone know what brand of tires was fitted on the Ferrari 312B3 spazzaneve?
Was it still Firestone or already Good Year?
On all the pics i can find, it has the Avon used in Historic GPs.
Thanks,

Oliver

Looks like the car ran on Firestones and when the contract with them ran out on Goodyears :smoking:

One of my favorite race reports (too long ago to remember which) questioned why "Little Art" was so fast. The opinion was that he sat so low in the car that he couldn't see what he would hit should he go off track.

IR a comment something like that, looking at this linked photo the observation was not too far wide of or above the mark

Interestingly enough, one of the reasons given in "The Lost Generation" for Merzario leaving the Williams team was that the cockpit of the FW04 was too small for him. ( Photos of Brise testing the Williams at Goodwood show Brise sticking wayyyy out of the cockpit ).

Well, I'd be very interested to know where to find this statement in The Lost Generation. Merzario gets one reference in the index, which only says that he was Brise's Williams team-mate at the 1975 Spanish GP. I've flicked through the rest of the book, but no luck finding it so far.

Absolutely right Tim. I got my books mixed up! ( Reading too many at one time I guess.) It's actually "Williams The Story of a Racing Team" by Bruce Grant-Braham that I got the infomation from, and the pic of Brise testing the Williams.

" In truth he (Merzario) hadn't shown the same promise as he had in 1974 and ever since he had originally complained of the smallness of the FW04's cockpit he hadn't seemed quite at home with his racing".

Thanks John. I've now checked in Doug Nye's Racers and he says the same thing:

Engineer Ray Stokoe drew a new Williams monocoque for 1975 which they called the FW04. When little Merzario arrived to drive it he complained the cockpit was too tight. Now Art had a human skeleton figure, his complaints did not ring true. The eight races he drove for the team that season have little to commend them.

Maybe Art was pulling Franks leg, Art can barely see over the top of the steering wheel

Elsewhere in Racers Doug quotes Frank Williams on Merzario:

He was an unusual driver in many ways. He liked to lay almost flat on his back in the car, so you could hardly see him, and the steering wheel had to be fitted perfectly straight, or thereā€™d be ructions.

Maybe he didn't like the FW04 because he could see where he was going.
