No prizes, but who can identify this machine, seen recently at a speed event in Essex?

Four bolt front wheels, five bolt rear--it's obviously not French

I've seen one very like it before.

Is it a Diva?

Well, if it were French, it would be allowed.

'No' also to Diva and Merlyn, although 'not French' is correct, if that helps

It's a story that's part of our motorsports folklore here in the UK, but whether it's well-enough known be recognized outside its "contextual background", I don't know!

I think I might have actually seen "N.65" somewhere, but I'm damn if I can recall what it is - if I ever actually knew...
It's quite pretty, isn't it? Is a modern (re)creation?

It's a repro of summat or other, or at least it's not as old as it looks - it's got a 1973 "L" registration, see....

I would've thought most Chapman fans would understand it.... along with tales about the width of his armchairs. Chapman vs the ACO is a duel that I wish had contiued through the 60s and 70s!

I think those 5 bolt rear wheels could be attatched to VW Beetle based hubs.

Getting warmer ?

No! I did think of putting 'SW need not apply' but it seems I needn't bother! :p
I don't think it will help at all if I tell you it has an Alfa engine and a Hewland box.
Next please...

Hylander MkVI.
I cheated. I asked someone who was competing there and has event results.

Did Team Lotus ever go back to Le Mans?

Geoff wins though, because none of us knew what it was.

To satisfy my curiosity I carried out a reg.no. check a couple of days ago, but did not post the answer.

So,what the **** is a Hylander ?

Really! How jolly unsporting!
I did wonder if that might happen after you mentioned Martyn Ellis's Sunbeam...
The Hylander is the creation of Richard Hopgood from Suffolk. You spotted the Ipswich registration, no doubt? It must have had one of the longest gestation periods of any car, as he started work on it in 1965 and evidently had some second thoughts about it over the years, as it's described as Mk VI, although it's the only one. He's only recently taken to the track in it and is about to put a twin spark in it. Will that make it a Mk VII?

Well.....I did wait a long time until it looked like no one knew!
(and if it had been North Weald rather than Debden I'd probably still be checking which event)
