I'll be extremely satisfied once everything is broadcast in HD.

The difference for me is not so great. I have had a digital set top box with a hard disk in it and two tuners, before getting the plasma, but the plasma was far superior to the CRT set. With the normal 570 satellite transmission, and it looks extremely good on the 50 inch medium definition Pioneer 7 generation screen. The HD transmission looks better but not by a huge margin - the colours though are a bit better, the detail improvement is really marginally better IMO. HD's 3 D sound when that is being broadcast is much better though.

Compared to the previous TV its 20 times better though, even in the normal digital transmission. However the normal analogue signal is vastly inferior. My conclusion is that digital is far superior when shown on a large panel, but that the higher density screen is providing only marginal improvements.

On modern LCD/Plasma panels standard digital looks pretty poor. On your normal tele it's fine, but since on high def panels it has to stretch the image to fit the resolution of the screen the result is not always pretty. Particularly with fast moving content, like F1.

Transmitting in high def means these panels can display at their native resolution and it appears vastly superior in quality to standard digital.

I can't honestly believe you came out with this comment to be honest, shades of Jackie Stewart... (Comment without suitable awareness of the subject being commented upon...)

I sort of agree and sort of don't agree. To me, the real innovation has been when digital technology allows us to do something fundamentally different to what we did before. The iPod and other MP3 players are a great step forward as they allow you to carry huge amounts of music with you in a small robust package. You couldn't do that with analogue. Digital cameras allow you to take large numbers of pictures, not have to wait for the film to be developed, and let you see the picture right after it's taken.

On the other hand, HDTV doesn't do anything fundamentally different. It's still just TV. Same with digital radio. It's just radio using different technology. The real benefit of digital technology in those cases is a marketing one.

hahah hippy alert, if you worried about wrecking the planet mate, stop watching motorsports!

and yes, for sure it is worth it to see the hairs on Nicole Kiddmans lips, buy Basic Instinct on HD DVD and zoom in on the money shot, oh the benefits of modern technology.

I wish F1 the pinnacle of technology would just pick up the HDTV bandwagon, it really is about time we saw some proper coverage.

Football looks amazing in HD as does many many TV shows, F1 would be by far the most awesome thing to see in HD

Come on Bernie, splash some of your cash

Hmm the 'full' or pseudo? (are some 1... x 1080 sets still not real HD sets?) HD resolutions TV are flooding onto the market in large quantities nowadays at relatively reasonable prices.

[However Sony's higher RRP for standalone Blu-ray player than PS3 is rather puzzling considering the gaping reduction in capabilities on the latter!]

F1 will adopt for full HD for 2008 then, which will be a step forward for the backwards old buggers at FOM!

I find it hard to believe the magnificent Brabham-Repco is incapable of defending it's championship won a few odd years ago, all the electricity going into the energy-greedy carbon-fibre manufacturing process seems such a waste just to grab a few Newtons more downforce on the lousy Williams FW29. ;)

Well I hope your still using that 15 year old video camera and that 10 year old computer. They certainly cost a lot more than today's ones do, so they must be a lot better, and you certainly you got a lot more quality back then, eh?

I can confirm that they used HD cameras at the Canadian Grand Prix. I stood right beside one for Saturday practice and Quali.

Something is obviously lacking in your setup - either the transmission or recption - here (USA via SAT) the visual difference is quite massive...

Well, that's not a revalation, it's quite obvious...

But I do say - and I'm certainly not a technology or TV freak - that the step up to HD has been revalatory when it comes to the visual expereince of watching sports/motorsports...

I think in Australia we have a much higher quality digital satellite signal. It looks about the same as our DVD quality. We have more lines than the US, our system is similar to Germany's PAL.

The message I am making though is that low - medium density - for us I think its 576P - which is what our standard digital transmission is - looks similar to a DVD.

Strangely going up to Blue Ray widescreen, the overall picture becomes smaller with a blue ray due to the lower height of the overall image. Although the colour is a bit better, a good DVD therefore has larger people images in it, the screen is all used, it often looks a bit better.

Well ... how can I say "often" - we have only looked at the one blue ray disk!

HDTV gives much more 3-d level of detail, due to the better resolution. I cant bother to watch much TV in standard definition any more unless its sports that are not in HD as of yet. Even with movies will only watch high def versions now.

No one is going to 'throw away' older TV's, they can still be used. Newer HDTV's are often eco friendly by not having many heavy metals, consume much less power, have energy saving features, etc..

You are contradicting yourself quite a lot here. You are so sensitive that you find DAB offensive to the ear (it's not that bad) and yet you don't think HD-TV is any better than crappy compressed SD TV? Either you're slightly blind and therefore have sensitive hearing or you're just complaining about HD-TV for the sake of it. FM when received correctly is better quality than DAB, but HD-TV is better than either analogue or digital SD-TV no matter what you say.

Uncompressed HD-TV should be better, but if the broadcasters go the same route as SD and try to cram more HD channels in, then we could end up with needing HD to get SD quality.

As I always say... I'm surpried sponsors haven't DEMANDED HD, so their decals can actually be read.
The difference with HD TV shows is big.
With a sports show it is HUGE, specially something fast moving - like basketball.

F1 won't go HD unless BernieBucks ($$$) are included.

F1 is Euro based? Funny, I thought it was Asian based.;)

No HD and no moveable onboard cameras all over the car in F1 like it is in NASCAR, no complete car-pit radio transmission, no cameras inside the helmet like in CART etc.

It's about time for F1 to catch up to other Racing series when it comes to these Technologies

Somebody oughta tell Bernie that he is now behind pro wrestling as it went HD about a week ago.

Soon the only standard def TV shows left will be public broadcast.........and F1. That's just not right for a sport that prides itself on new tech.

ITV HD is launching later this year, around summer time, there are rumours f1 will be broadcast on this new channel. I understand the launch is set for around July time. Certainly BernieVision now shoot in HD, so it's probably the same old licensing issues to get round - and if ITV can make it financially viable, then hopefully it will work out. The grands prix shown in cinema in the UK were "broadcast" in HD.

It's rather odd that f1, despite being a hi-tech showcase is broadcastin SD - and not even in anamorphic widescreen!

Hopefully this will be the year...

Last year Indy television was done by "F1 Communications". They brought in their own people and equipment, incuding a very euro looking air conditioned tent. Every F1 Com. camera I saw was HD. They seemed to be using a slick wireless system to link their cams around the track.

I am sure Bernie has already spent the money for HD, and likely shot and produced every race last year in HD. The HD just never got beyond some hard drive inside that airconditioned tent. This is merely my speculation perhaps someone is in the know on this...

Why no HD feeds? I bet it has something to do with broadcast right$$$

Someone knowledgeable at another forum said that the cameras he's seen used in F1 use HDTV lenses but aren't actually HDTV cameras. I think the people in charge of F1 are in general too old to get the importance of HDTV.

There's a few things I don't understand..
Why they haven't got a better drivers' eye view, why they haven't got a fast frame rate on the cameras since they always show slow motion shots and why they don't seem to be interested in auto zoom car or tracking onboard cameras since the hardware and software is out there and cheap enough.
Based on the way my camera tracks faces and focuses on them surely since thats only £200 worth of camera there must be a way of having auto zoom and focus on an onboard camera.
Mini cams helmet mounted is the way forward, I think they could easily be incorporated into the drivers helmet with a bit of collaboration. Surely motorised too, the software could be slowly developed there's no rush for that.
I want to see more radio controlled hovering cameras also, they dont have to be right over the track, just be more creative with it all like the yanks.

Here in Brazil there is a small possibility of the HD transmission of F1 starts in the second semestrer, as a test. But probably will be real only in 2009. The good news is that its in free tv, but just for who lives in some cities where the digital broadcast will be available until then.

Pathetic........

If someone wants to shame Bernie, let him know that the ENTIRE 2008 IRL season will be in HD, on ESPN.

Now, if that isn't humbling, what is?

One could also let him know that NASCAR was in HD in 2007. NASCAR's 2nd series the Busch Series (kind of like the GP2) was also in HD.

To be honest, while I would love F1 to be HD in 2008, I can't see it. It's not even widescreen yet.

I'd be happy if they upgraded the ancient graphics and on-screen info. How many times have we seen the stupid display showing the order with the number of pitstops, when what we need to know are the gaps and how they are changing?

It's fine if you have access to the live web timing but if not a modern tactical F1 race is near unwatchable.

Plus their setup box needs to be hd as well.

thats another £300 to spend just for 4 channels (extra £10 to get the sky hd channels of which there are 11)
ITVHD is scheduled for this spring.

Forget Freeview HD as nothing is planned at all until after 2012.

Several will be capable, but I guess most will be like the UK with quite low take-up currently. The thing with that line of thought though is why F1 deems it unnecessary when so many other sports (NASCAR, Premier league football, Wrestling etc) think it is worth it. Those sports are obviously getting enough HD-capable viewers, and I wouldn't imagine F1 would be any different.

On TSN-HD, we had wide screen HD pictures of the races with audio from ITV. The onboard camera shots were noticeably lower quality than the regular shots. The widescreen coverage is nice except that the graphics are in the wrong position, as if they overlaid the graphics for a 4:3 screen on top of the 16:9 picture. Kind of stupid because the graphics are quite annoying when they're not at the edges of the picture.

Are you sure it was HD?

I had seen the same 16:9 format used on ORF1 (Austria) or Polsat Sport (Poland). However it's just wide screen not a HD.

And I agree with your opinion on graphics on screen..really annoying

Yep, we get screwed on the cost of everything and the government/monopolies like BT won't invest in better infrastructure.

Not only will the entire IRL season be shown in HD, so will the IPS support series. And the IRL will use a new HD in-car (actually on-car) camera that can rotate 360 degrees while panning and zooming.
