Is it paint? Decals?

Just curious to know what it is.

Special stickers...

I guess they are cheaper to produce than painting..and light enough that it doesn't matter..plus it allows for those interesting prints

you can see it peeling below the airbox :p

I dunno what other teams use this method, but I believe the Audi R10 is skinned in this manner.

The technology has trickled down from NASCAR. :)

And it trickled down to NASCAR from the trucking industry. Pretty common stuff. 3M supplies a lot of the film and certifies "authorized installers" who print on the film with big inkjet printers and apply it.

Exactly right. First used for the big graphics on the sides of semi van box trailers. Then they got the film thin enough to pull over compound curves, and perforated it to be used on bus windows etc. Now you see the stuff everywhere.

Still hasn't caught on for closeup stuff though... the quality of the surface finish is not good at all. Looks especially crappy under artificial light. Some may find this amusing... the paint jobs you see on cars at SEMA etc? To take a brand new vehicle straight off the assembly and make it look like that costs around $40,000.

The end result looks like they are promoting some new NYC night club for the stupid and insecure.

yessir... the graphics scheme on the Honda RA107 looks like one of the prints found on double-knit polyester mens' shirts from the Disco era.

Quote from friend who works at Honda F1:

I was going to go with dipped in algae, but I think yours works.

I've seen photos from three different photographers at the same event in the same lighting, and the car has looked completely different in all 3. From light blue, to dark blue, to purple. Likewise the Spyker appears to be a completely different car depending on what country they're testing in and what the weather is like at the time.

For the record Greg isn't talking to McG, I removed a spam post that was above Greg's.

I've been bemused recently that all the spam posts/threads have been at this end of the street.

Back on the topic, I saw some photos early in the season with some ill-fitting stickers. Why didn't they paint the car (water) blue then stick the land over the top to use less sticker?

Seems unlikely we'll see it back again this year anyway..

I sure hope so; while interesting to look at as a showcar on a stand, it certainly isn't a proper race car livery and I hope the team's poor performance will make them want to introduce the RA108 with a completely new livery- hopefully based no their ivory/red history.

Earth Car goes for one more year, and then 2009 is back to...well, whatever.

Remember the BAR colour scheme (1/2 555 and 1/2 Lucky Strike) was banned and the determination was that cars had to have symmetrical paint schemes. The Honda clearly isn't.

I thought the BAR looked great but not many agree with me.

No the zipper livery it was not banned if I correctly recall. What was banned was running one car with 555 and the other with Lucky Strike livery.

I liked it too, at least it was different as well. Red and white is boring IMO, and silver / chrome is a bit strange considering the cars are carbon fibre. I'd love silver if the cars were aluminium. RBR is my favourite, I liked the original Renault racing yellow and blue (used I think once in testing), but the earth was great IMO and it was also different.

Any different color scheme makes life easier for a blue flagger, and actually being able to see a car number (even if only on the rear wing endplates) is very unusual in this day and age.

I worked for a company that was trying to do the decals for the Jag car once due to the film they used was to thick. We tried different things but in the end trying to help them just fizzled out, shame really would have been cool being able to say 'I did that'
