The car that could've should've revolutionized F1, the Lotus 88
A great write up on the 88 by Lotus insider Peter Write.... highly recommended reading.
Stunning - the engineering spirit in the end of the 70s, beginning of the 80s was second to none. In a way these cars look much more modern than anything that has graced the circuits ever since. Sad it was not to be....

Great one, thanks! Right after the start?
It's Kimi, Schumi, Massa and Webber? Or Heidfeld?

Thank you G12. As I said there will be more. Unfortunately the only venues I shot F1 were Long Beach, Caesar's Palace and Montreal, and only a handful all together.
I have plenty of early stuff of Gilles in my Gilles and Atlantic sets if you're interested.

Awesome, awesome pic. Rosemeyer looks so chilled there, like he has nerves of steel. Which he probably did. Just fantastic. Here he is again,

Jealosy is an unpleasant trait in people I know, but I'm turning rather green at the wonderful experiences you must have had watching and snapping these pics of GV. Not only are they great photos, they are for me a wonderful insight into of his early career. May I offer a rather humble well done, and thank you for sharing.

And Cardenas what is the fighter? I'm assuming the track is Avus therefore it should be a Messerschmidt or Focke Wolfe but don't recognise the wing shape.

I think the that this photo it's not from avus, it's from the speed week, by the looks of the car i'd say 1937.
The reason why the fighter is there....i have no clue. Sure i'm wrong, but maybe the car and the fighter had the same engine.

I could look at those pre-war pics all day long too. Heros.
I wasn't around in the day, so I'm afraid these are all recent shots, but the cars still look amazing. Were the early cars so big so those brave souls could store their balls inside...?

The two pictures show the October 1936 Rekordwoche on the Frankfurt/Darmstadt autobahn, the car using the 1936 GP chassis but fitted with a 5.6 litre V12 motor giving approximately 600 bhp. It managed three new records including 227.99 mph over 1 mile. I'm not an aircraft authority but somebody better informed on here will know chapter and verse for sure about the plane.
The similar but larger 1937 record breaker used basically the same motor developing more power but fitted in a 1937 W125 chassis. It had a more pronounced nose and a much larger 3 pointed star painted on the front and suffered from air building up under the front of the car at circa 245 mph to the degree that all feel in the steering was lost! Thereby hangs a story for another time.
In the picture of the Mercedes being push started note that the aluminium nose of the car and air intake have been severely dented and distorted by the air pressure at over 220 mph. Nevertheless they are still going to have another go! Incidentally the earlier pic in the thread of Rosemeyer is from the 1936 Swiss GP, the stone setts of the Bremgarten circuit visible in the background and the no.4 race number.

Re headrests; Im sure it wasn't easy but the cars weren't generating anywhere near the Gs they would be 10 years later. Neck injuries in a rear-end accident don't bear thinking about however.
