Behind Gary is Fritz Kayle and on the picture right in apron is Tyler Alexander and in front of Gary with his arms crossed Sid Carr, in front of Sid is Dennis Daviss AKA Deadly Dennis. Gary was getting ready for the 1971 indy 500 in this photo.

Peter Revson drove the #86 McLaren to the pole position and finished a very respectable 2nd in the race. Gary was a crew member on the team as were Tom Anderson and Tyler Alexander and Teddy Mayer and Hughie Absolam.

This very car is now owned by Don Devine, who has its restoration back to the way Peter drove it almost complete.

Nice picture. To fill in a gap, the fellow in the middle in the white shirt is Norman Hossack, who used to mess about in his spare time in Colnbrook developing a novel front suspension for motorcycles, using the principles and construction techniques he learned from building racing cars. BMW Motorcycles eventually adopted and adapted his design, marketing it as the "duolever", though they neglected to credit him as the inventor and compensate him accordingly. He has a website that relates the whole sorry tale.

By the way, I think this is actually Rutherford's winning car from 1974 rather than 1971, based on Norman's presence, the dash layout and details of the chassis by the driver's shoulders.

Thanks

Nigel

I came across the following photo of Dennis Hulme testing a McLaren M16 at (I believe) Ontario Motor Speedway. Tyler Alexander, Teddy Mayer and Karl Kainhofer are also seen. At least I think that is Karl. Note; no front wings and a stock car in the background.

Yes, that's Karl. I think this must have been one of the first tests of the M16A. Karl and Haig Altoonian used to come to the UK to build the Penske-destined cars at Colnbrook.

Jerry - I was not aware of this thread before today, when you posted the Chaparral pic, and I went back to check out all the previous postings. What a shame the earlier images have been lost to the change-for-change's-sake nature of the IT biz! Thanks for posting. Gary is one of those singular personalities from a spectacular period in racing.

I don't think I've ever seen a photo which better exemplifies that Bruce was so young and alive when he was taken...

And if you seek out the 'Charmers' thread on this forum you'll see the high regard in which he was held.

Gary Knutson in his first race car.
In the states these cars are called Soap box Derby Racers. You would go with your parents to the local Chevrolet dealer. You would get the axles and wheels from the dealer. You also were given a set of plans and your dad usually pitched in and you made your racer according to these plans.
http://www.youtube.c...feature=related Soap Box racers in action

There usually was a steep hill or street in your town and in the summer you would race the other kids. The winners would go to a final held in July in Akron, Ohio at a place called Derby Downs.
The letters on Gary's car were a Local Radio station. Gary is calling this his first race car.

matagpoweredtrike600x41dj3.jpg
After Gary raced his Soap Box Racer he decided to use the wheel on something with a motor: He calls this a Maytag powered Trike.

Gary got the motor out of a 1930's Maytag gas powered clothes washer. It had a Kick starter to get it to go.
I am putting a link of a gas powered Maytag washing machine running and of just the engine running so you can see what he got it out of and how it must have sounded.

Thanks for posting this Jerry - great story! One of the first engines I ever rebuilt was my grandparent's Maytag gas powered washing machines. Those engines were LOUD!

Jerry, thanks for all the great images and stories. Your last post with the image by Tom Smith, Is I believe to be at the Road America 500 at Elkhart lake

September 11-13th. 1964. Two Chaparrals were entered, one was a DNS due to problems. the second car retired due to brake issues while leading. On the right you can see the Corvette Grand Sport (005) which was entered at the last minute as a substitute for the non starting Chaparral (the entry

was open at Elkhart) and finished 3rd. overall. Hall, Penske & Sharp jumped back and forth between the two cars.. Quoting Jim Hall " we kind of left

the officials scratching their heads over that one"

I got my information from the Friedman "Chaparral" book and the Paddock and Friedman "Corvette Grand Sport" book
