I think you'll find the 70's even more popular than the 60's around these here parts...

Lombard RAC Rally Tuesday 25 November 1975. Special Stage 49 Greystoke Forest
"DATSUN VIOLENT"
N0. 15 Harry Kallstrom and M. Stadt Datsun Violet. Kallstrom took his Datsun off the road and down a bank on the very first stage Bramham and from then on was not at all convinced of the suitability of Japanese Dunlops for rallying. Consequently he took the rest of the rally very carefully and finished the rally without any great trouble in 11th. place overall

It is amazing what we forget, far more apparently than we consciously remember.

I had not thought of Richard Taft for decades and here he is in the Cobra, great stuff.

Thanks for stimulating the little grey cells again Norman.

Quite right too Alan, the decade of taste and decency, after all those 60s excesses!!! One of the first ever meetings I can recall, at guess where, I can remember even now the Richard Taft and Sean Jackson Cobras. The names have been with me ever since, no idea why.

And doesn't that look like Tony Pond next to the Nogues Van Diemen, anyone know who it is?

I'm certain that's Rick, he raced for Lazenby / Hawke that season, maybe had his contacts in. The guy with the hair/tache is I think Graeme Glew, who ran the Touraco school at Cadwell.

Ah, Mr Glew. Team Touraco, one of the few entrants of the Lola T540E, and from Lincs I think. The chap next to GG has a nice 70s shirt, I used to have one like that, maybe still have it!

The Taft/Jackson Cobras were sure a good sight and sound in the 70, s often seeing off the Jaguars of Burbidge/Shaw and later the Beddington V12 version.

THE RETURN OF MOTOR RACING TO DONINGTON PARK 28 MAY 1977
Super Saloons
Did you know that there was last minute scare before the opening of Donington Park after the war. Late on Thursday afternoon before the saturday opening, the RAC declared iy was unable to issue a track licence to Donington. A statement was issued by RAC to this effect "For some time the RAC had been in contact with local footpath preservationgroups and Tom Wheatcroft the circuit owner. Counsels opinion was received by the RAC to the effect that ther was no legal way that a footpath that intercepted the circuit at two points can either be closed or diverted to allow a race meeting to take place.
Donington motor racing circuit agreed that the inaugural meeting would take place, less the two planed single seater racing car events. This overcomes the problem of a footpath crossing the track, because it was lawful to run events for cars over a footpath so long asit is classified as a trial and only involves motor vehicles as defined by the law. The Law does not include racing cars.
The folloewing cars are not racing cars

I don't recall that - and as a rally Clerk of the Course around the time (for authorisation purposes, a rally and a trial can be considered together) I would have had an interest! English Law cannot surely define a "racing car" within the umbrella of non-road legal vehicles, only (the then RAC) MSA regs do. I think it must have been something a little more informal - doing a deal with objectors (who wouldn't have understood the difference) saying no single seater racing cars were involved or something like that. Even it being called a "time trial" rather than a race wouldn't alter things.
Today (and as far as I am aware then - we tend not to get such laws freed up over time, quite the reverse, and are facing new, serious problems right now) single seater racing cars can run across public footpaths temporarily closed for the day by the local authority and such hill climb venues have also been lost because objectors stopped the closure of a footpath. From personal experience then, the MSA would not have required legal advice as the position was well known.
Anyone else have any knowledge of what happened at Donington? (as far as I am aware, there had been closure for a special stage of the RAC rally there as early as 1972, long before the new track was surfaced)

Daily Express Indy Silverstone 30 September 1978
Car No.14 A.J. Foyt Coyote Foyt 78 Entrant :- Gilmore Racing Team/Citicorp
The Texan was first to admit his car was getting long-in-the tooth. The four-cam Ford engine, for instance was almost 250lbs havier than a Cosworth DFX, but A.J. was more concerned that his car was the only one to carry all the fuel on the left hand side - during qualifying a con rod broke which condemmed him to a fifth row start.
During the race, the great man was charging, he moved through the field, desperate to win the race, he was leading when the race was stopped due to heavy rain

I well remember the hoo-ha about the objections from the footpath brigade to running the opening meeting, and I went there half-expecting to see an elderley gent wearing tweeds attempting to throw sticks across the track for his retriever to collect. They did, however, allow Gunnar Nilsson to run a few demonstration laps in his JPS Lotus 77 with Tom Wheatcroft perched precariously on the sidepod.

With the GB Wales Rally due to start, and then confined to one place on the Special Stages, I would like to show what it was like more than twenty years ago when you could pay £1.50p to park your car on any stage you wanted with four people in the car (£1.50) and then wander to any spot you wanted provided it was safe to stand there.
Here are some examples of my Rallying days and the RAC Rally that I have chosen to show you is 1981, the first one is Kershope Forest at 5.30 a.m. with car No. 62 Louise Aitken (as she was known in 1981) and co-driver Ellen Morgan they were competing in a Ford Escort RS 2000, finishing 19th overall and winning the Ladies award

Car No. 10 Michèle Mouton and Fabrizia Pons Audi Quattro at Oulton Park the day after the two previous ones, charge for entry £1.50 each, with parking free.
things were going well up to third, then they started to go wrong o S.S. 41 Crychan the Audi gearbox could only offer first and fourth gears and also the front wheel drive packed in, and then on the snowy Beddgelert stage she hit a bump and landed awkwardly and failed to catch the Quattro which lept of the stage and slid down a 30 foot enbankment and came to rest on its side and out of the rally, up to then she had set four fastest times on Grisedale, Burwarton, Knill and Brycheiniog, neither of the crew were hurt

A.J. Foyt. Love him or hate him, he is certainly one of the best there ever was...

P.S. That's a very serious-looking bump he's hitting with the right-rear wheel.

Great RAC photos (but actually paying? don't remember doing that in 81!)
That car was being run by MCD/RED in 81 for Louise and the late Ellen Morgan and is advertised as being around today. I'm unconvinced, since it was a Gp1 unstrengthened shell, so all we can say is a car with that reg no is around!
Originally Prince Michael of Kent's droopsnoot RS2 on the 76 Tour of Britain? then run by David Sutton for (Australian?) David Lang. Believe it was then Mike Stuart's "flatfront" car in Castrol/Autosport and, later, RAC championships and RAC Rally before Louise used it? Some of the Gp1 spares held for it by Sutton and for the later Alan Carter Duckhams car got built into my car when I bought them at Sutton's post-Rothmans Escort sale.

Twinny, surely this thread is a PERSONAL batch of photos from one rather excellent photographer. To suggest that the photos should no longer be posted on this thread is tantamount to closing it down!

I don't understand why especially as there are hillclimb and rallying photos as well!

Most members of this Bulletin Bioard are quite complimentary on the photographs that I post, but there are some real nit pickers who criticise some of the remarks that are described with the photos, recently quoted the engine size as 2988cc, someone came back and implied that I should have quoted 3000cc, I try to give complete and accurate information in all my postings, then someone recently suggested that I should post some photos on other threads, then others have suggested that I have quoted wrong dates for certain meeting, then other members have replied with further information proving that I was right in the first place, Then an argument at what constituted a racing car (which was a mild joke) at the first meeting at Donington Park after the war in 1977, just nit picking I put the photos on the site for others to enjoy as much as I do, so in future no nit picking eh.

£50,000 European Championship Trophy Race Donington Park 25.6.1978
No.23 Alex Ribeiro (Brazil) 2.0 March 782 Hart Entrant :- Jesus Saves Racing
Thanking the Lord for his excellent practice showing was little Alex Dias-Ribeiro, who Jesus Saves Racing March was really flying especially in the later stages. and was extremely happy to qualify second on the grid.
Ribeiro having fitted far too long a first gear, was swamped by the pack, everyone avoided contact with the red Jesus Saves car - for Ribeiro in his effort to recover lost ground, had gone straight on in the sand at Coppice and rammed the nose into the wall, ending the little Brazilian,s race there and then
