My usefulness to the team was dramatically reduced when I found there was no mobile reception in the hall so I couldn't google the answers.

That may have been so Allan but at least you knew the answer to the Penske question in full.

Surely the first WDC win by a car with disc brakes was the 1957 British (Vanwall)?

The next Herts TNF Film Show gathering is now booked and will be on :-

Saturday 23rd January 2010

Please put it in your diary now, we hope to see you all there early in the new year.
Our guest interview will be with Hugh Chamberlain who amongst a long and varied career as both a driver, running an engine machining and building business, preparing running and managing a vast number of privateer teams mainly in endurance racing as well as the factory MG team in the early 2000s, Hugh completed a run of 26 appearances as an entrant at Le Mans. This season he has been running current Aston Martin Vantages.
Hugh was always a favourite interview in the LM pitlane for both TV and Radio Le Mans.
So start working on your questions for Hugh now !
We will have a picture based quiz.
TNF member and film maker from the early 70s Roy PG has agreed to lend us some great films he shot 1970-75 at Crystal Palace. Brands, Silverstone, Mallory etc Some of the cars and drivers we all know but no one else seemed to film !...........and a whole lot more!

Hopefully it will be something to look forward to after Christmas and the new year. ( we used to have the real Racing Car Show in early January and then the GP season used to start around the 3rd weekend in January usually I think with the South African Grand Prix )

Richard,
May I be the first to say "count me in" for January? Your mooted "noggin & natter" on the Friday night looks like a good idea too.Could be persuaded to spend a cosy evening in front of a roaring pint of something very tasty and some good TNF conversation! Look forward to the picture quiz, will we need a magnifying glass or just a very good memory?
See you all in January,
Regards, Stephen

Wikipedia has Scuderia Enzo Ferrari Automobili Corsa, but I think this is incorrect.

Sorry to drag this up again, but have just come across this:

That's a nicely presented piece of evidence David.

Did you get it off Mike Coughlan?

Who's Mike Coughlan?

Sorry David, probably a bit too 21st century for you ;)

He's the ex-Mclaren employee who received 800 pages of Ferrari technical documentation from ex-Ferrari employee Nigel Stepney a couple of years ago. The alert was sounded by the local Prontaprint when his wife took it in to be copied. The resultant scandal, inevitably nicknamed "spygate" was big news a couple of years ago, you'll no doubt recall having had your memory jogged.

For what it's worth here's his Wiki bit http://en.wikipedia....i/Mike_Coughlan

Nothing less funny than a "joke" that falls flat eh? :|

Well, I enjoyed it, Rob.

Many thanks Tony, you've spared my blushes

Being a habitual Googler, a click on this http://en.wikipedia....age_controversy reminded me of all that had gone on in 2007, and made me think what a baptism Lewis has had with McLaren, what with this and the Dave Ryan episode earlier this year. (You'll have to Google that one yourself David. ;))

Wonder what Bruce would say.

We used to have a postcard from the early days of McLaren - maybe to celebrate their new premises in Colnbrook - which bore the motto:

"Winning isn't everything (But it's somewhat better than coming second)."

Maybe he wouldn't have been too appalled.

Re the quiz at the last filmshow;
see post 3 here

I knew the answer would be Harry Ratcliffe, or Brian Waddilove and BRW26 one of these days.

Don't forget, put it in your new year's diary, that
the next TNF History of Motor Racing Film show is on

Saturday 23rd January 2010 - all day,

4 hrs of varied films, a speaker, lunch and tea and a gathering of friends with some time to catch up ( and a lunchtime picture quiz this time ! )

That is only 7 weeks from now , something to look forward to after Christmas in the new year.

Years ago, we used to have the much missed Racing Car Show in central London and the start of the new GP season in January, so I hope this is something you have to look forward to just after the turn of the year now .

We very much hope to see you all on the day, we do need your support to keep it going. If you have not been before then please e-mail me to go on the mailing list.

Saturday 23rd January 2010 - all day, north east Hertfordshire

4 hrs of varied films, Hugh Chamberlain best known of course for 26 appearances at Le Mans as entrant and team boss on a huge variety of cars will be our speaker talking to Simon Arron so get your questions ready for him, lunch and tea and a gathering of friends with some time to catch up ( and a lunchtime picture quiz this time ! , which David is busy compiling as we speak!!)

That is only 5 weeks from now , something to look forward to after Christmas in the new year.
If you have not been before then please send a PM or e-mail me to go on the mailing list for details.
Please do brave the elements in your classic, sportscar, rally car as well, plenty of off street parking.

If the cold weather predictions are anything to go by you might need to dig out the snow chains ready !! You may need to regard getting there as part of the event rather like the Monte Carlo Rally used to do ! Get the thermals on and there will be a hot steaming mug of coffee waiting for you when you arrive.

Afterall its only driving on frozen water..................How hard can it be ??

http://uktv.co.uk/da...cle/aid/628084/
( Rear wheel drive on snow that is rallying ! )

Fear not we shall go ahead no matter what the weather

If any of you have any old film or video you or previous generations have shot on old car, old motorsport or motor trade films , that we could borrow and show in the future shows do please get in contact.

Not just any old Motorway/John Bull Remoulds...they're M & S tyres!

Anyway Richard,I'm just digging out the cords,Duffle coat amd trusty old brogues, filling the best pipe with St.Bruno Flake and warming up the XK for another swift trip south.Make sure the co-driver brings his Don Barrow Romer (spelling???) and Potti before plotting the route to the depths of Hertfordshire. On second thoughts maybe the lure of heated seats and climate control could win this time of year.Look forward to it.

That is such a glorious car, and it suits the gathering so well Stephen. you might have seen the praise James May gave to one on their race from London to Edinburgh XKvs Black Shadow vs The new Steam Loco Tornado. The XK of course won with effortless ease and never missed a beat !

Most can't.

Fortunately the beautifully restored white Jaguar XK 120 drophead had the only sensible and sympathetic driver of all those on Top Gear in James May , the others are horribly destructive as you say Allan.

This is the film clip of the XK vs the Tornado train

Series III Landie on stand-by - should be able to make it there and back with only a couple of refuelling stops.

Please can I have my traditional role of suggesting wildly wrong answers to Tony M., for him to offer to a wider audience then take the flak for being way off beam?

Thanks for posting that lovely pic of the old girl Richard,it's nice to be reminded of what the sunshine looks like on this grotty old day in " East Angula "
-I'd better go and check the garage and make sure the old girl's OK,not seen her much recently (and I don't mean SWMBO)!
As far as that lovely feature on Top Gear is concerned, what they didn't actually mention was the,at least three fuel fillups 'twixt London and Edinburgh going by my own hopeless consumption experience-mind you a steady cruise at 55 or so would make a big difference, but so boring, and you don't get that lovely noise either. And Gary,I'm not such a wimp really,as a terrific drive across Exmoor in the old MG ( TD ) in the snow would prove! if I still had a drop-head I assure you that top would only be erected very rarely (monsoon conditions only when speed had to be restricted to<50 mph)-get back to your tea-making!

I'm very much hoping to get along to this one, having missed the previous events and having been generally out of the mix in the recent times.
When do you need to know definite numbers, Richard?

(My Caterham is up and running again now, so I'm hoping that might put in an appearance too if I can sort a couple of niggles.)

Excellent Tony.

As long as everyone can let me know 10 days before the event so that is by the middle of January.
We will also run the menu past you and have more details between then and now. Any friends you want to bring along is just fine as long as we get their details.

This is most impressive all you chaps planning to come south from such distances, great effort much appreciated especially as I look out this Sunday evening on about 4 inches of snow !

Hopefully we will get the low temperatures out of the way this side of Christmas and we will have clear roads in 5 weeks time.

Otherwise you will need to get the rally cars out !

Nothing wrong with a sensibly driven front wheel drive estate car! Today the roads are crowded with numpties who haven't the first clue how to drive on snowy roads! Not helped by the Local Council failing to get the gritters out due to it being a Sunday when it snowed!
