Everyone really enjoyed hearing about Dan Gurney's experiences in motor racing. He had the audience eating out of the Palm of his hand as they say.

I am going to show the Forum members what it was like at this event this past weekend. It was the brain child of Dave Wolin. He enlisted the help of the Riverside International Automotive Museum and Doug Magnon and Ray Magnon to accomplish this great event.

Doug Stokes was also a Powerhouse at this event.

It's purpose was to Honor Dan Gurney and the other Legends who were at the first races at Riverside.

Bill Krause was the winner of the 1960 Riverside Grand Prix driving a Birdcage Maserati.

Of the Indy type drivers at the event there was Jerry Grant, George Follmer and Lothar Motschenbacher and Bill Krause and of course Dan Gurney.

No event could be run without the help of supporters of the event and Norma and Sonnie did a great job of getting everyone signed up and issuing credentials.

Harvey Lasiter and Doug Hooper behind them.

Bill Pollack has written a very nice book on his racing experiences. It is called Red Wheels and White Sidewalls. Both Lance Reventlow and Bruce Kessler considered Bill Pollack a friend and a Mentor.

Joe Playan was at the first race at Riverside and was leading the under 2 Liter race until he slid of course. He came back to finish 3rd in that race.

That hot chick behind Lothar is his lovely wife Olivia.
Lothar explained the movie he was in for James Garner's Cherokee Productions called "The Racing Scene" and the audience then got the opportunity to enjoy the film.

Doug Hooper and Harvey Lasiter
Both of these guys were CanAm drivers. They also worked together 40 years ago at Doug's Corvette, this was Doug Hooper's Corvette repair shop in the Valley area of Los Angeles. It was located in an area called Studio City.

This event was more like a 50th Year Reunion then it was a Racing type Event.

Harvey Lasiter is now living in Las Vegas and Doug Hooper now lives in Northern California.

The guy in the white shirt behind them is great photographer Dave Friedman. Dave brought his new Corvette book and his Cobra book to this event. He was signing copies for the fans.

The joke of the weekend was whenever anyone saw their friends, they would say "They look like themselves, but they are so much older."

I said to Lothar Motschenbacher after he said that when he saw Doug and Harvey, Lothar don't look in a mirror. We have to remember this is nearly 50 years down the line.

All the Drivers present signed this guitar and it was auctioned off for Charity and purchased by the Gurney Family.
Bob Bondurant is a recipienet of a new heart pacemaker and was in great spirit throughout this event.
Bob raced in Formula One. Other Formula One drivers at the event were Howden Ganley and Pete Lovely and Tony Settember and of course Dan Gurney.

Eric Haga and Davey Jordan
Eric Haga is one of the driving forces behind the F-5000 Group in America. Davey Jordan was a team driver in the day for James Garner's Racing Team and appeared in the movie "The Racing Scene."

Eric Haga is hoping to be able to compete in his Lola T 192 this season in the F-5000 meetings. He has been restoring his old car over the winter. He tells me he is the crew chief and head driver of the team. In other words he is doing all this by himself.

Albert has done publicity work for such teams as Gurney and Theodore Racing and Swift Race cars among others. He also is a very accomplished race photograper. He is a get it done type of guy and respected by all.

The Eagle was an Indy type car designed by Dan Gurney's team and was very successful in Indy type racing.

Jerry, no wonder you have not been posting in the last week. You have been quite busy with this reunion. It must have been a wonderful event to attend.

I see where Jerry Grant has not gotten a new rug yet....

Good to see a photo of Lothar Motschenbacher. Wish he would do more historic race appearances. He was such a fixture in the USRRC and Can Am days that he must have lots of stories to tell.

As I've mentioned on other threads, Riverside means a lot to me: though I never competed there, I have many happy memories of spectating in that SoCal dust. And 42 years ago this month two crazy kids -- who grew up to be my wife and myself -- were married in downtown Riverside.

Tom: You asked for it. Here is another of Lothar this time with his "Beautiful Bride" at his side.

They showed the movie "The Racing Scene" that Lothar Motschenbacher was in at this event. In one part of the movie Lothar is real fiesty and talks back to the team manager. I asked Olivia is that the way he is at home. Her reply was "Exactly."

By the way, everyone who got the opportunity to meet Olivia Motschenbacher, commented on what a Lucky Guy Lothar was to have such a great wife.

This is a picture I am very happy to post. In the day Peter Brock was a race driver and driving instructor. He also was a race car designer. He is the man who designed the Shelby Daytona Coupe and the Lang Cooper and the Nethercutt Mirage among others.
Peter and his wife Gayle are now race photographers and Journalist. While taking pictures at an Off Road Race, Peter was very gravely injured and it is a miracle he has recovered so nicely and was able to enjoy this event. The prayers of the whole racing community were fighting for Peter's recovery and they have worked.

Peter Brock also appeared as a race driver in a student project film done by a very young aspiring Film Student you may have heard of.
George Lucas!

This film was shot at Willow Springs and I have seen it and can only say that after watching George Lucas's work on this film that I wouldn't doubt he would go on to make StarWars and many other great films.

Oscar Koveleski and Elliott Forbes-Robinson

If this event were a school Reunion, the guy who came the furthest to get here would be Oscar Koveleski. I may have come in second coming from Michigan.


KidRacer that Oscar Koveleski had done in Gurney colors for the Auction.
The very good looking girl doing the driving is Evonne Barsakis, Evonne also helped out at the credential table with Norma Jordan and Sonny Turner. Her driving instructor in the KidRacer was Oscar Koveleski himself. She did a very good job of keeping the car off the walls.


Buford: I think most of the guest of the Legends of Riverside are like Peter Sellers in the movie "Being There"
They like to Watch.

Both these guys raced in Formula One in the day. Bob Bondurant may get the award for the most wives. I believe he told me he has had 6.
The fellow to Pete's left in the picture is also a Formula One driver, Tony Settember. Tony would get the award as being the fittest. He came to this event in perfect shape.


The good looking guy on the right is Howden Ganley.
Sid Taylor and I ran the BRM P 167 for Howden in the 1971 CanAm at Riverside and he finished a fine 3rd in that race. Howden also raced Formula One and owned the Tiga car company with his friend Tim Schenken.

Bruce Kessler
Bruce showed his film called "The Sound of Speed". Bruce also was awarded the Cooper 500 Trophy.

Bruce would get the award for the person who has lost the most weight since the summer. He has lost near 40 pounds and looks very good. He had his buddy Richard Meddoff at the event with him and Richard told me Bruce is watching his diet and working out in the gym every morning. I was very happy to see the new Bruce Kessler at this event.

Dave Friedman and his friend Susan Claudius and Richard Meddoff.

Dave grew up in the same part of town as I did. We went to the same school. He was in the Class of 1956 and I was in the Class of 1960.

Dave Friedman was the official Shelby photograper in the day and also has done great books on McLaren Cars and Lola Cars. He had his newest books on the Cobra and the Corvette with him at the event. Susan Claudius was helping Dave sell copies of them.


Dennis: We missed you. You weren't alone on the sick list. Chic Vandagriff wanted to come also but wasn't up to the trip. Chuck Jones had his pacemaker replaced.

I met Robert Ryan this summer at Mosport, Canada where he had brought his McLaren Mk 6. He held the lead in the early part of the CanAm Reunion held there. His car was presented exactly as if it were back in the day.

Dennis, I looked for you before flaking out at noon on Saturday. I missed the Gurney spectacular and the Sunday entire. I bet we'll be in better shape next year, eh?


Now, I'll offer my stuff. For all the great camera gear I toted around, somehow it just didn't work right all the time. I'm not as fast as I once was, either.



At the Registration and Autograph desk, Bob Bondurant signs one of many items inscribed by as many racing drivers and dignitaries as would fit. The memorabilia were auctioned or sold with proceeds to charities.

(Edit: The wheel visible on the counter behind Bob is the "Cooper Trophy"; cool!)

Peripatetic racing drivers Toly and Karen Arutunoff very graciously hold still for the photographer. Toly's book, One Off is delightful reading for nostalgia fans. Plenty of quick facts and opinions about life in the quicker lanes.
