This blog was created to give all of us Trans Am and 2.5 Challenge enthusiasts a place to post our pictures and memories of going to the races. It is my hope that we will share our personal stories and more importantly personal photographs. Let's post all the pictures we can find here on this thread. I will start out with a few of what I have.

Some of these were taken at Road America others at Brainerd International Raceway. I will update and confirm which is which next time I see my father. He should be able to distinguish the tracks since he was the camera man. My hunch is that the images taken from inside the track facing the passenger side of the car are from Brainerd and the others are from RA.

Tony Adamowicz comments on blog
I Co Drove with Bob Tullius at the very First Trans Am Race at Sebring. Although we were 2nd Over All, this was the first TA race in a Unproven Dodge Dart and the first over 2 liter Win for Chrysler Corporation. Bob and I co drove at various races through out the season and had another win at the Marlboro 12 hour race. Group 44 inc provided the most wins and top finishes for Chrysler corp. in the entire history of Trans Am Racing. Attached photo from my site: http://www.a2zracer.com/page9.html

I also drove in various TA races in the Group 44 Lotus Cortina, the race budget was no existent for this car to be really competitive. Reliability was also a big issue to overcome.

Have you seen this thread?

I was at Brainerd in 1970 and remember the finish with George Follmer and Milt Minter. At the Tribute to the Trans Am, I got some T/A programs autographed by drivers, including George Follmer. When he saw the Brainerd program, he chuckled, and said "Donnybrooke!"

That event looked like a lot of fun! It is always nice to see that much thunder in one spot.

hahaha I remember hearing all about that race from my dad. The action...the thunder....i was born to late. As he explained it, George Follmer and Milt Minter were passing each other just about every lap of the race. For a bunch of laps, George was doing most of his passing by putting a fender...this was taking place on any one if not all of the corners. Minter was in the lead then Folmer was in the lead back and forth for 3 or so laps...but in the last lap Folmer had the advantage lead and on the outside coming into corner ten. They came into the corner together only this time it was Minter who was leaning on George. Minter knew that the winner would be whoever came out of the corner and he made sure it was him. As far as I recall he story going, minter didnt turn until the last second and Folmer ended out in the weeds.

So basically Minter did the same same thing George was doing to him; only this time Minter made sure it was at the time that counted most. Popular win! Privateer wins! Corner ten went nuts cheering. Wish I would have been there.

Scan those programs. I would love to to see some of your archives.

I suppose most know Donnybrooke, built by the Montgomery family, was named after Donny Skogmo and Brooke Kinnard - both killed in separate racing accidents at Road America.

Hi all - i am new here , but am very glad to have come across and thanks to all of you for posting this vintage trans am info - absolutely wonderful.

I am wondering if any of you can assist - i have only come across two pictures of a '68 Craig Fisher Firebird - one in Friedmans book and one in an old muscle car magazine i have - and both are black and white photos - i think of car racing at Bryar in '68.

I am trying to confirm the colors of the car - and have had NO luck!!? I was told it was possibly yellow with black striping - any assistance much appreciated and pleeese post more vintage trans am!!!

I have hundreds of old car mags from '64 - '71 but there seems to be nothing on this car (i seem to recall one color photo but can't recall which magazine and am still looking!!) and i went through pretty much the whole year of '68 Autoweek was hoping although it would have been a black and white, to at least catch a glimpse in there too - but again no luck

thanks very much - hope some of you lucky enought to have been involved 'back in the day' might recall from seeing in person?? i wish i had been around then to experience it all!!!

regards, Ron

The last place I ever expected to have images of the TransAm series turned up some great ones. 54 total and all of them are for sale! To see them visit http://www.gettyimages.com/ key word "Trans Am Racing" and "trans-am race". Here are a few of my favorites. It is well worth the click...check out the image Jerry Titus and the fish eye picture of the Autodynamics Dodge Challenger crew members polishing Sam Posey's car. Very Cool!

carpenterdesign,

1) Great period photos! We don't need no stinkin' guardrails!

2) It looks like Shelby had copied the refueling setup from the Penske team by this race at least (elevated, but maybe not chilled)

3) Donohue, not Donahue (a very common misspelling)

1) Glad you like blog. I hope it takes off. I hope it becomes the place where Trans/Am enthusiasts come when they are researching their car, the series, or just in need of seeing / talking about some old thunder.

2) Once Penske re-discovered what Sir Isaac Newton had known for years, it was fare game. Wonder if the chilled gas actually made a difference or if it was just an intimidation technique? Either way, it was the creative bending of the rules that makes the series legendary.

3) hahaha i didnt realize that the results sheets that I was copying / cut and pasting from had his name misspelled...my bad...well kind of theirs..haha! Good eyes!

Thanks you again,

Clay

George Follmer and Milt Minter were passing each other just about every lap of the race.

In the Nov 1970 Auto Racing (U.S. magazine), from Sam Posey's account of the Donnybrooke Trans-Am, "...Entering the last turn of the 69th lap (70 lap race), the Mustang's brakes lock up and the car slides off the course. George controls the slide beautifully but he has lost 200 yards and the race. Refusing to admit defeat, he recovers most of that distance, but he tries too hard on the very last turn and spins. Minter takes the checkered flag; Follmer is second, nine seconds behind..."

I cant say who is right or wrong, I wasnt there and the in car camera showing the entire encounter plus what led up to it is not there...nor is the on track corner by corner video available for replay. But Time Magazine did have this to say

Sport: The Trans-Am Donnybrook
By Monday, Jul. 20, 1970

"...Little Solace. In the first of the 13 races in the 1970 Trans-Am circuit, six different makes of cars were among the top seven finishers. Mustang roared off to an early lead by copping the first four races, then lost out to Donohue's red, white and blue Javelin. That set the stage for race No. 6 last week at the aptly named Donnybrooke Speedway in Brainerd, Minn. In the hardest fought contest so far this season, Follmer's Mustang and Milt Minter's Camaro waged a torrid battle for the lead. Growling into the final turn, Follmer tried to charge past Minter on the outside; the cars bumped, Follmer skidded off the pavement, spun in a complete circle and then finished 15 seconds behind Minter. Afterward, Follmer bulled his way into the winner's circle and took a couple of wild swings at Minter before he was restrained by police.

Race officials disallowed Follmer's protest that Minter had deliberately bumped his car three times in the final laps. They fined the Mustang driver $100 for "unsportsmanlike conduct." Said Minter: "At first I thought George was coming out to shake my hand, but when I saw his eyes—he was hysterical!" The point tally as of last week—Mus-fang, 48, Camaro, 26, Javelin, 25, Challenger, 7, Barracuda, 5—held little solace for Follmer. Last year Mustang won four of the first five races and still lost out to Camaro. With seven encounters still ahead, the real hysteria of the 1970 Trans-Am is yet to come."

Read more: http://www.time.com/...l#ixzz0c1heZsUp

that said here is a link to a movie that also shows George's aggressive driving style. I have a feeling that he liked to use the car in front of him as a break.

These are a few images takes by Ben Weston. He has them for sale on his site http://www.timelessracer.com . Great period shots showing lots of action. Although the site was a little hard to find, it was well worth the click. These are a few of his TA photographs. The site contains more!

Found some pictures of your car while browsing the link that was provided by Tom. Hopefully these are pictures that you dont already have. Sorry they are not high resolution but as you can see, one is in color!

Now you have to return the favor and find one of my Volvo. hahahaa just joking...But for real.

Peace and happy motoring!

:-D Hi Ron, Glad I could help! This is my 1966 Volvo 122s Trans Am racer. It was raced by *Chuck Cunningham, Gene Hobbs, Bob Mouat, Don McKnight , Stephan Sharkey, and later Don Marino. Note the number charges: 35, 55, and 78.

Thanks, Clay

*After this message was posted, race driver Stephen Sharkey positively identified my Volvo 122 and clarified some of it's history. According to Sharkey, he built my car in 1970. Removing Chuck Cunningham, Gene Hobbs, Bob Mouat, Don McKnight from the drivers list. The pictures below are of a similar but different car. According to Sharkey, in 1972 the car was sold to Harold Cunningham (confirmed by Cunningham's wife). He went on to race the car at tracks like Nelson Ridges and Watkins Glen in B Sedan. If you have any information regarding the Stephen Sharkey, Harold Cunningham, Don Marino Volvo (ran numbers #10, 78, 99) Please contact me.

Getting to Run with the Big Dogs

Post by Robert Barg. Excerpts of story published at the http://thegarageblog.com
by Gary Grant on September 22, 2009

The ex 67 Mo Carter car is the one I raced from 68 to 72, 14 races in total including a DNS at Bryar in 70, after practicing and qualifying, but unable to start because a jr. crew member overheated the engine in the paddock.

I purchased this car from Mo as a roller in the spring of 68 for $1800. He had driven it on the 67 Shell 4000 Cross Canada Rally before club racing it that summer. It was a very basic car, just a roll cage, drum brakes on the rear, and street Koni shocks. It was one of the first Z 28’s imported into Canada by his dealership City Chev in Hamilton Ontario. This car was a work in progress. My previous racing experience was with a 998cc Mini, so it was a steep learning curve. A friend built an almost stock 302 engine for me and we did a few club races in 68 at Harewood and Mosport before trying the T/A at the Glen that year. A racing friend Rick Stevens co-drove that race with me at the Glen. He also raced that 4 hr. 67 Sebring T/A race with his Mini. At that Glen race, we had front suspension problems, and just limped the car home. Despite this, we finished 7th in the over 2 litre class and 12 o/a. We learned that we had a long way to go to be somewhat competitive, even as a privateer. Note that in the race I waved Jerry Titus by during a caution period as we were very slow with problems. Later after the race there was a meeting with the stewards as Jerry had been called for passing under the yellow. I assured them I had waved him by and Jerry’s victory was allowed to stand.

Early days at Harewood Acres in my 998 mini (blue car) - 1967 I think. Bought the ex Mo Carter 67 camaro next spring as a roller - did one T/A at the Glen in 68 with Rick Stevens co-driving.

I sold the car as a roller, at the end of 68, to Al Richards in Toronto. Al was a mechanic by trade and had a drag racing background. I managed to con him into trying the Sebring 12 hr. in 69 if I supplied the engine. It was quite the adventure and Rick Stevens and I managed to finish 3rd in the over 2 touring class and 25th o/a. That summer I co-drove that car at the Mid Ohio T/A with GM engineer Dick Hoffman (who later built 2 1970/71 T/A camaros, one of which I owned and raced in 1980 in 3 T/A races) Dick had already been racing with Dave Horchler in a 67 Camaro (H & H Racing). I’ve had some email contact recently with Dave, but Dick sadly died in a road crash in the mid eighties in CA. I continued on driving for Al Richards till the end of 72. We had no budget and the prize money we won helped us thru.. My job was to keep the car in one piece and find us a tow vehicle for each race. I had to borrow one from friends for each race. I was also very good at scrounging spare parts in the paddock. One time at Mid Ohio we needed some front brake parts and actually went out into the parking area, found a Z 28 and jacked up the guy’s car, and removed the parts, and left a note on his window saying we would be back after the race. The guy was thrilled that he was able to help us out – imagine!

Posted Image
Taken at Sebring in 69 during practice for the 12 hr – Rick Stevens co-drove 4 hrs. We finished 25th o/a and 3rd in 5 litre touring – won 1000 bucks. We were amazed to finish in that almost stock Camaro – it was quite the adventure.

This is taken at a club race at Mosport in 68 - this is how the car looked at the 68 Watkins Glen T/A race.

Here is a photo of Dick Hoffman and myself at an SCCA regional at the Michigan Speedway road course in early 69. Not sure why we went there, but I think it was to let Dick drive the car and help us with some set-up.

Camping out in the St. Jovite paddock in the 70 T/A race (before car was painted yellow).

Dick Hoffman in a Canadian race at the old airport track Harewood Acres, near Jarvis Ontario. Dick was a GM engineer at the Milford MI proving grounds and tried to help us with race setup by driving some races in 69 for the new owner Al Richards in Toronto. Dick had already been racing with Dave Horchler in 67 with a camaro (H & H Racing). Dick and I co-drove the T/A at Mid Ohio in 69, but a rear axle broke just after he took over the driving chores (I had started). Dick later drove the Riverside T/A race in 69 - he had secured some money from Ford to be a camera car - somewhere I have a photo of the old movie camera mounted on a plate on top of the roof. He did finish that race. This was the ex Mo Carter 67 camaro that I owned in 68 and then sold to Richards and ended up driving for him till 72. It was later sold to a stock car racer and was destroyed at Pinecrest Speedway in 75.

loaded up for a trip to Bryar - about 500 miles away from Toronto. Note the overloaded borrowed 1/2 ton pickup and rickety stock car trailer we borrowed also. That's how "Big Bucks Racing" travelled.
Posted Image
Car was painted yellow for 70 season (3 races) - had some good luck at Bryar - 11th and 12th in 71 & 72
Posted Image
Posted Image
Taken after the 71 rain race at Lime Rock – we were a happy gang – finished 9th despite taking the front escape road 3 times – won $1,000 – a very big deal for us at that time as we literally had no budget to go racing – needed the money to see us to the next race.

Dave Lawler's Camaro at the 70 T/A race at Watkins Glen. Tony DeLorenzo's camaro on inside.

By the end of 72 the 67 was old, and worn out, and we could see the writing on the wall for the series. It was sold to a stock car racer who wrecked it at Pinecrest Speedway, near Toronto. I managed to contact the stock car driver’s son a few years ago and asked him what happened to the car. He said it got “bent” and was parted out. No idea what happened to the remains, except that the 12 bolt rear end was in his street camaro.

It was a great time, running with the “Big Dogs”.

My co-driver Rick Stevens , leaning against the car, at the IMSA Camel GT 6 HR Mid-Ohio 1973 ( we finished 3rd in TO class with 302 engine) . This is the ex Mo Carter /Alfie Ruys de Perez 1969 Trans Am camaro (70/71). I raced this car at the 73 Lime Rock T/A (blown engine) and also the 73 Watkins Glen T/A , with co-driver Stevens. This race was shortened by rain and fog.

I later owned and raced one of the 2 Hoffman built 70/71 T/A camaros in 3 T/A races in 80. Dick, sadly, lost his life in a road accident in the mid-eighties.
Would do it all over again in a minute - as a friend said "you lucky s.o.b. - you ran with the Big Dogs".

This is the first TG Racing Firebird prepared and raced by Jerry Titus in the iconic Trans Am race series of the late 60's / early 70's . With Jerry behind the wheel, this car qualified first at Kent in 1968 and won at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona. One of the few surviving Pontiac Trans Am cars. It was restored and race prepared to period specs for vintage events by Bill Elliott Racing in Georgia for Rick Titus (son of Jerry). The car is in the Historic Trans Am Registry and has had the privelage to compete on numerous occasions at premier vintage race events including Goodwood, the Wine Country Classic and the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. It is fully race prepared with only one event on the recently freshened motor. The car was shown in 2008 at The Quail Concour in Carmel Valley. A brief history of the Firebird is summarized in an article published in Hemmings: (see at http://www.hemmings...._feature16.html ). Have you seen this thread?

http://forums.autosp...amp;hl=Trans Am

I was at Brainerd in 1970 and remember the finish with George Follmer and Milt Minter. At the Tribute to the Trans Am, I got some T/A programs autographed by drivers, including George Follmer. When he saw the Brainerd program, he chuckled, and said "Donnybrooke!"

Mostly, I announced at Westwood. These days, I help with the announcing at the Mission, B.C. (Canada) Historic races. As for my history, see this link, post 1316:

http://forums.autosp...w...ock&st=1280

I announced at the "later" Trans-Am races that took place at Westwood. Probably my best memory of that was the battle between Nick Engels, Corvette, and Bob Tullius, Jaguar XJS, in 1978.

Very cool! With all the programs and pictures you have collected over the years, is it possible that you gathered images from the East coast TA races? As you may have read further up the blog, I am looking for pictures of my Volvo 122. How much do you charge or your services or do you do it for the love of the sport? For me, researching my car and helping others learn more about theirs has been half the fun. It is always exciting to uncover another artifact.

What brought you to the Brainerd Donnybrooke Trans-Am race? Did you take any pictures of that trip? If so, I, and probably everyone that has visited this blog, would love to see them. Growing up in Wisconsin, Brainerd was soooo close...but sadly I have never made it there :-( After hearing so many stories, I think I should plan a trip for this year.

It is exciting to talk to someone who is such an enthusiast of the sport. I would love to see some of your archives

No images from East coast TA races. Brainerd was my one and only venture east. Mosport, Road America, Watkins Glen...all on my "bucket list." I just really enjoy digging into road racing history.

As for Brainered, it was during the summer holidays, and I think I talked my mom and dad into us going back there in Dad's Volvo 123GT. No photos, but I did have some good audiotape from the event, including the announcer's comments with regards to Follmer and Minter...since lost!

 Loved the photos and race results, especially of the 2.5 and 2.0 Trans Am cars. I was wondering if anyone had any photos of the 1970-1973 Ford/Mercury Capri's that ran in the series in the early 1970's? I know the owner of one of the surviving cars (it is currently campaigned in the 2.5 Trans Am Challenge class at vintage events) and would like to find some images of the car in its historic livery. One of the Capri's belonged to Oliver Jones', and he only participated in three races in 1972 -- Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, and Bryar. I recall that Bryar was a IMSA, not an SCCA T/A race.

I make resin cast 1/32 Capri MK1 bodies for use on slot cars, and would like to be able to see the images of these cars so I can recreate them in scale.

Apparently, in 1972, Oliver Jones participated in the Lime Rock and Bryar T/A races, and the later Bryar IMSA. I don't see him listed at the Watkins Glen T/A though.

Some photos that I found on the http://www.virhistory.com website of my 1966 Volvo 122 race car. This car was ran out of the Bates Cunningham Volvo dealership and driven by Chuck Cunningham. I am looking for more images of my car so if you recognize it please post them.

These photos were taken by VIR - July 1966 Trans-Am
Photos by Watts Hill, Jr. - July 30-31, 1966
-----------------------------------------------------

Hi, if your 122S Volvo is the red #55 in the picture, and my records show Cunningham on #55, then it is on the 1966 VIR T/A grid next to my red #42 Alderman/ Richards Alfa RHD GTA s/n 752507. She later was raced by Gaston Andrey then Bert Everett as #25 in 3 different liveries and is pictured a few times in this thread. Thanks for that.

We have tracked a lot of the Alfa T/A involvement on the Alfa BB in a Trans Am Thread. http://www.alfabb.co...s-trans-am.html

I'm new here so where can I find more on your Volvo? Are you vintage racing it? Never mind just saw your post #35

Last night I came across this guys website. It shows his involvement with automobiles, racing and music. Really cool pics; definitely worth checking out! http://formula-ccm.t...d-car-pics.html

Some of you who grew up in or around New Jersey in the '60s and '70s probably recall many of the same racers. These are the pictures he had of the Trans Am cars.

Here's a Trans Am grid at Bridgehampton

Bridgehampton -Things were low-key and often the big name racers would just work on their cars out in the open in front of everyone. One time when we were in the pits at the end of the day, Roger Penske asked me to get Mark Donahue a beer......so I did.

Back in the day a lot of the pro-race cars still used open trailers. I think this was Sam Posey's Trans Am racer around '70.

Special Thanks to this guy and all of you who scan in your old photos for us to enjoy!

Back in the day a lot of the pro-race cars still used open trailers. I think this was Sam Posey's Trans Am racer around '72.

1970 was the only year that Posey drove the Autodynamics Dodge Challenger in the Trans Am. Sadly, the glory days were already over by 1972.
